Yamato stood before the cauldron, chanting. At seemingly irregular intervals, he would throw in herbs, animal parts, or his own will. A songbird sat upon a perch, taunting him.
"You could be soup as well as companion, my friend," Yamato chided as he finished and stood back: a long, thin staff of pure alabaster raised itself from the cauldron, and Yamato smiled.
"Fetch the girls, bird," He ordered.

Mari sat near her house, concentrating. She was trying to control Wind, but to no avail. She sighed and kicked a nearby tree in anger. "Why can't I do it?" She asked herself, frustrated

Yaku, the songbird familiar of Mari's father, swooped down and landed on a branch. "Fetch the girls! Fetch the girls," he cried, flexing his rainbow wings and looking directly at Mari. "Fetch the girls!"

Mari watched the bird for a moment, then went into the house. She came back out carrying Akari, with Sira following.

As his daughters entered his private workshop, Yamato turned and brandished his new alabaster staff.
"Thank you, Yaku," he said as the bird settled on his perch, and the bird replied with, "Then pay me overtime, boss."
A sharp look from Yamato quieted the bird. "My loves, Sweet Sira, Magnificent Mari, and Adorable Akari; I want you to see my latest masterpiece. Do you know what it does?"

"Does it make Mari have a normal hair color?" Sira joked with a grin. Her fox ears twitched as she said that.

Yamato looked cooly at Sira. "She is your twin. So does that make your hair color 'abnormal,' young lady? And, considering your recent lack of application regarding your studies, would you like to hazard a guess as to what this --" He gestured with the wire-thin alabaster, "Does? Or will you surprise me with the correct answer?"
His stout frame moved closer to his daughters.

Yamato's own ears twitched in response, and one of his bushy white eyebrows raised. "Come now, girls. This isn't the hardest question I've asked. Consider: A fire from strong oak, a cauldron of iron, pure springwater infused with herbs of the field, and parts from both beasts who burrow in the earth and those that fly in the sky. From that rises a staff of alabaster."
The songbird trilled nervously when Yamato mentioned 'parts of those that fly in the sky, and Yamato glanced over at the bird with a wry grin. Then he turned back to his children.
"So what do you guess it does?"
