Then your probably going to lean more to Light and Medium Class machines. Lights are built around speed. In fact one creedo of a light mech pilot is "Speed is life" Massing between 20 and 35 tons, there biggest defense is Speed, There job is normally to scout for heavier machines and provide targeting data. Mech's equipped with ECM can also employ Stealth armor, this armor makes you basicly invisable to sensors but comes at the cost that your mech cant disapate heat when the armor is engaged.

Mediums are the next step up from Light Class machines, well they are able to carry more powerful weapons and more armor, this comes at the cost of speed, well they can be used as scouts they typically are used as Light mech hunters. because of there comparable ground speeds and heavier weapons. out of all four classes of Mech, Mediums are probably the most well rounded as they mass from 45 to 55 tons.

I prefer being a Stealthy and sometimes Hard Hitting mech
But other times i think like a Tactical Officer and use Snipers

Yep. The whole game is based around building your machines to suit you. You can change Armor types. Internal structure (mostly to save weight as each mech can only carry so much) But you need to also take into account Ammo if your weapons need it, and the amount of Heat generated. Too much heat and your mech will shut down or even blow up from over heating. A smart player balances his builds with solid hitting power, good heat efficiency, and speed. depending on the class of machine.

That's how I play bro. I don't do MLG must be pro crap. I play for fun. If your not having fun, your doing something wrong. But fair warning. Your going to sink hours into customizing your Mech's to suit your play style.

Yeah. well here's a good one to start on. https://www.amazon.com/BattleTech-Le...ensky+volume+1
this is right at the start of the Clan Invasion Era. which is the most common point where most BT noobs start in. mostly because it has some of the most well known machines. Also if you have a decent Gaming PC you should think about picking up MechWarrior Online. It's a Free to play game. good community too. And available through Steam so you shouldn't have trouble finding it. I'm more then willing to give you a low down on how to play and really get you into the Meat of the series, Now i'm warning you now. it's VERY VERY fan fiction heavy, The official books actually started from a Pen and paper game in the early 80's maybe late 70's. And it's evolved from that almost non stop.
