Maybe House Glover fought during the Blackfyre Rebellion (for some reason), and the ancestor fought for the then Lord Glover and fought very well? If the ancestor had many older brothers, he might have decided that fighting for some lord was the best way to secure a nice situation for himself. As for the distance, I figure that Sam travelled from his house to the Wall, so it would be doable, even if it would be a long journey. But of course, we could do something similar and pick different locations. And I agree about the name. Any ideas?
Hm, I like your idea...but sounds a bit complicated. Don´t feel the name "Robin" yet, either. Also, there is a lot of distance between the North and the Reach. And what service did they do for the Glovers?
Maybe the name of the house can be House Robin? In the Reach, the sigil is a regular robin with a red breast. In the north, the robin has a blue breast.
How about our house being a cadet branch of a house in, say, the north of the Reach. Our ancestor helped a former Lord Glover, received those lands and moved to the North. Fast forward many years. Currently, the main branch of the house has many daughters. They want to marry the youngest one to the Starks, and they send letters to the cadet branch in the north to plan this together. Unfortunately, the daughter's education is a bit neglected because she is rather lazy and spoiled and indulged by her educators. The lord of the cadet branch offers to take in the daughter as his ward and finish her education. He also writes the girl's mother that his family has adopted the northern custom of directly applying correction to the children rather than using whipping boys and girls like in the Reach. The mother accepts his offer.
