well I was thinking maybe they could take in another boy who is a little more experienced in his magic and him and Masen could not get along at first. I was also thinking Emilie could be holding a secret from the boys that the new boy is actually her birth child that she had many years ago. Like I was thinking Mages can age differently from humans like alot slower. The boy could be about 7 or 8 and she had him like 20 years ago. Idk just an idea
