Maybe they are trying to battle a fire or water Pokemon, not to keep it, but to resolve a conflict between Pokemon that's tearing the island they're visiting apart. It could be any type of Pokemon, maybe a Dragonite King or a Wartortle.

True, maybe they have to investigate a cave to find Ash a Pokémon but Misty is on a high horse the whole time and separates from the group but finds what ever Pokémon Ash was looking for and it kicks her Pokémon l’s butt, leaving Ash to swoop in to save her.
