Rachel didn't come clean, however. Indeed, making sure not to look smug - that could give her away! - she just stayed neutral about it, and so, after breakfast was finished, her mother picked the "birch" up and tapped it against her hand.

Both parents frowned at this, turning to Rachel.

"Rachel, is this true? You are potentially in very serious trouble - and if you lie and we later discover this, it's going to be even worse still."

"Huh? No way, why would I want to do something like that? I mean, with another girl - and one in the family no less! There's no way at all! Megan's probably just afraid and doesn't want to get in any more trouble!"

"Well, Megan... considering everything that has happened, lately, can you think of a reason why we should trust your word here over Rachel's? Any at all."

Gripping the bundle again, she motioned towards the living room. "Okay, get into position."

With a sigh - and wishing there was a clear answer to it - her mother raised the bundle of switches. And then she brought them down, firmly. There was no loud noise, as each was thin and just whistled through the air slightly. The impact was not heavy, so there was little sound there - although a mess of pink welts instantly formed over the target area.

She paused, waiting for a reaction - she didn't want to overdo it, so wanted to see how hard Megan took a single stroke before delivering more.
