Rainy Sunshine [eastjesusnowhere]
http://puu.sh/ieREc/11d5bcb93f.png This is a RolePlay between myself and eastjesusnowhere. Please do not post, but you are welcome to read along, if you wish to. Thank you, and enjoy. On a chilly autumn afternoon, Cecilia Wilson went about her business in the diner she owned, cooking orders and taking them alongside her waitresses. She wasn't above a hard day's work, and she knew that the extra effort she put in meant the world to her patrons. It didn't go without notice, that was for sure. Most of her customers were regulars that came more for the people and the atmosphere than for the food itself - that wasn't to say Cecilia's cooking wasn't good, though, because she definitely had her fair share f culinary skill. The diner, named Come Rain or Shine, certainly wasn't the most popular eatery in their small town, but it had enough reputation to earn a decent living, and that was all Cecilia cared about, in the long run - continuing to pay off the building and being able to afford taking care of her young daughter. Those were the things that mattered. The Come Rain or Shine diner was a cozy little place, with hefty wooden booth tables lining the large windows; the orange-y lighting above every table somehow gave it a permanent fireplace-like glow, and the soft music that played over the radio only served to add to the ambiance. The booth benches had thickly padded red leather cushions, and the floor was a deep brown tile with black speckling. On the walls were framed pictures of local families and newspaper articles that outlined the town's greatest achievements over the years. The single-floor upstairs accessible from the kitchen was where her and her daughter called home, as well, in the cozy little three-bedroom apartment. Everything about the diner had an essence of warmth. When she got a call that said her daughter needed to be picked up, she explained that she had to stay at work because it was during the lunch rush, and added that she would send one of her employees in her stead. One of her older waitresses, a long-time friend of Cecilia's named Belle, was the one who heeded the call and left to get the little girl from school. It was frustrating; both she and her employees were busy, her daughter interrupting their work day because she'd gotten in trouble was just unacceptable. The red-haired woman, who looked young for her age, tried not to think about it and instead buried her mind in her work. She cooked, served, waited, bused tables, and cleaned, throwing herself into it with gusto. It was much easier than stressing about the trouble to come when her daughter returned home. Her waitresses made several cracks about her earning their pay for them, which she couldn't help but laugh at the truth behind; when she really put her back into it, she could do the work of ten. The lunch rush was over by the time the little delinquent was brought into the diner by the hand by Belle and, with a nod of Cecilia's head, marched into the kitchen. Once her mother wrapped up what she was doing, the red-haired woman dried her hands on a fluffy red towel and entered the kitchen. "Alright, Missy," She began in her 'Stern Mom' voice, lifting the girl up and sitting her down on one of the tall stools in the kitchen. Placing her hands firmly on her hips, she continued, "What happened today? Did they send you home with a note?" |
Jacqueline Wilson, though you shouldnt call her that, looked up at her mother knowing she was in deep doody. She reached into her backpack that was a little big for her size and pulled out a yellow piece of Paper that read:
Dear Ms. Wilson, Your daughter Jacqueline was caught hurting three other boys with another boy. She actually caused one to be rushed immediately to a doctor. She is suspended for two weeks. we hope you will deal with this issue apporpriately. Sincerely, Principlal Norman Jackie looked up at her mother "I...m sorry mommy.." she said "theses boys were bothering me and this boy came up and helped me...." she said then looking down at the counter seeing a cookie in a jar she quickly grabbed it and took a bite out of it "Dees boys were vewy mwean..." she said with cookie in her mouth as she gobbled it down. |
Cecilia eyed her daughter through narrowed slits, then took the paper to read it over. It was brief and didn't give much information, but her daughter filled in the rest of the context behind it. Two weeks? She couldn't deal with her daughter being around 24/7 for two weeks - she had to work, to run the diner, and to take care of their apartment on top of it.
She watched as Jackie took a stale cookie from the cookie jar in the kitchen and sighed. "Listen, dear," Pushing a long lock of red hair behind her ear, she leaned forward so she was eye level with the girl, staring her straight in the eyes. It was time for a moral dilemma for the little girl, to help her understand why what she did was wrong. "Did those boys really deserve for you to beat them up? How were they bothering you?" |
Jackie looked up at her mother "I..I dunno mommy..." she said adjusting her skirt nervously then looking down at the foor.
Just then a young boy came into the diner looking around curiously he mustve been a year younger than Jackie. He walked right up to the tip jar and quickly snagged it hoping no one was looking as they were all in the back. he started dumping the money in his pocket quickly putting the jar back. Jackie looked from behind her mother and saw him "hey mommy looks It's Juno...!!!" she said looking and pointing at him. Juno froze in fear of them seeing that he took the money. "Uhhhhhh.... hi Jackie!" he said waving at her a bit nervously |
"Sweetheart, that doesn't make sense. What did the boys do to -" She was cut off by her daughter suddenly spotting something behind her, and she turned just in time to see a young blonde boy dumping the contents of their donation jar into his pockets. Being as it was a diner, generally patrons left tips with their checks or on the tables instead of in jars, but they also had an optional donation jar that went to a local charity for animals.
Approaching the young boy, she went towards him and gently took his wrists in one hand and removed the money from his pocket with the other. Five dollars and a few pennies was all he'd gotten; most of the people willing to donate had done so already when they first instated the jar. Placing it back into its rightful place, she led him into the kitchen. "Jackie, you know this boy?" |
Jackie quickly nodded "he helped me with those boys from school..." she said rubbing the back of her head chuckling a bit.
Juno looked at Cecelia and spoke up "those boy were touching her privates and tryin to look" he said gulping nervously "i was just tryna help..." he whined "she didnt touch them. i beat them up and i ran away so they blamed her..." he said looking down "i dont evens go to school there..." he whined trying to pull free to no avail |
Cecilia, like any mother, wasn't pleased by this development at all. She had thought it wasn't like her girl to beat up boys, and especially unlike her to have the skill to take on three of them and win. "Yet they suspended you? If this is true, neither of you did anything wrong. It was those boys who were in the wrong here." She checked the clock and sighed. "There's not much we can do about it right now, though.
Turning to Juno, she gave the boy's head a gentle pat. "Sweetheart, where are your parents? Do you need me to call them?" With a sympathetic smile, she added, "I'll unfortunately have to tell them about what you did with the donation jar, but I won't forget to add that you helped my little girl." |
Juno looked down sadly "i dont have any parents..." he said "but i better be going so you donts call the police..." he said starting to walk out solemnly.
Jackie jumped off the counter and grabbed his hand "w..wait where will ya go?" she asked cocking her head a bit. Juno looked at her "I...I guess back in my little box....on the street..." he said " i has no where else to go.." he said slowly pulling his hand away. he turned around and stopped to breath in for a moment |
As the little girl was just getting in the way of her finding answers, Cecilia gently instructed, "Jackie, head upstairs and start your homework, okay?" After waiting for her daughter to obey, she took the blonde boy's hand and led him out into the diner, empty now that rush hour had come and gone. It wouldn't fill up again until dinner time in a few hours. Sitting him down in a booth and getting one of the waitresses to bring him a glass of juice, she sat down across from him. "Juno, what happened to your parents?"
|
Juno looked at her "my mommy and daddy were killed in an accident..." he said drinking the juice fast having not drank anything in 10 hours. he looked over at some man who was sitting across from them as he ate his burger. Juno couldnt help but stare not having eaten in 2 days.
Jackie headed upstairs and started her homework sitting at the desk in her room. |
"And you've just been living on the street since then? Don't you have any other family?" She followed his gaze, noting he was staring at an empty table, but practically drooling despite staring at thin air. It almost seemed as if he were hallucinating. "Wait here." The redhead headed to the kitchen and quickly fried up some chicken nuggets and fries. About fifteen minutes later, she brought it to the table and set it in front of him. "Eat up, hon."
|
Juno looked at her at quickly shoveled the food into his mouth eagerly then looking up at Cecelia "I has no other family..." he said into a mouth full of food. he wuickly grabbed a napkin from the holder and wiped his face and grabbed the ketchup "whats this?" he asked curiously looking at the bottle having never seen or even eaten ketchup before.
|
Unable to help but smile at his antics despite her sadness for the boy's situation, she gently took the bottle from him and squirted a bit onto the end of a fry. "Here, eat it," Cecilia said, holding the ketchup'd fry close to his mouth and keeping her free hand underneath it to prevent it from dripping on him. "We'll see about getting you into a foster home tomorrow. Until then, you can stay with Jackie and I, alright?"
|
Juno eat the fry out of her hand carefully giggling a bit as she fed him. his eyes widened at the taste of the ketchup "dats really yummy..." he said giggling more then he looked down "why do i has to be in a foster home?" he asked curiously
|
"Because you need someone to take care of you. You can't just live on the streets forever." She squirted some more of the ketchup onto the side of his plate for him to dip his fries in. "You'll be able to find a nice home and a nice family to live with. Doesn't that sound nice, Juno?"
|
Juno then slowly dipped his fries into the ketchup eating them looking sadder all of a sudden. "i...ive tried dat..." he said "why do you think i rans away?" he asked "no one wanted me..." he said slowly pushing the plate away now having not have finished. "The last foster daddy i had told me i was bad..." he said tears forming in his eyes. he then quickly got up from the table "i gots to go..." he said walking towards the door now tears flowing from his cheeks
|
"I think you're lying to me, Juno." She was all too familiar with this over-dramatic childish behavior; all children did it at one point or another, and it was always a falsehood. The foster system carefully looked into and screened every home; this boy apparently wasn't homeless, he was a runaway, and there were definitely people looking for him. No one took a child from the system just to abuse it. They were people who genuinely wanted children, most of them because they were unable to have kids of their own.
Grabbing the phone on her way, she took hold of the little blonde's wrist and called the police to report the runaway. Sure enough, he fit the name and description of a boy who'd been being searched for for some time. After she hung up, she sat him down in the booth again. "Finish your food, dear." |
Juno just growled at her "lemme go!!!" he grumbled trying to get out of the booth
Jackie then came running into the diner "i...i finished my homework mo-" he stopped as she saw Juno crying "mommy whats going on?" she asked |
"Good girl, finishing your homework. Go upstairs and stay for just a little longer, sweetheart. I'll make dinner soon." She said to the little girl, sitting in the booth so as to block Juno from getting out of it.
|
Jackie quickly ran back upstairs to watch her favorite movie "The Princess and the Frog". she slipped it in the dvd player and watched it excitedly
Just then a man walked into the diner "you report a missing-" he looked down at Juno "uh miss? thats not the child we thought it was. weve seen this kid before he has NO parents... he said "hes actually been in the adoption/foster system for about a couple months now..." he said talking his hat off he sat in the booth across from "ill take an ordr of onion rings while im here..." he said. the man looked at Juno "i see you got out again buddy" he said smiling at him. Juno just looked at him "i dont wants to be there...." he said crossing his arms |
Putting her hands on her hips, she scoffed. "Well, doesn't matter where he came from, I reported a missing child and he's missing." Cecilia went to the kitchen area to begin making his order. "If he's only been in there a few months he's hardly had time to find a home. You'll see to it he makes it back to where he belongs, right?" Maybe what they needed was some better staff to watch the children. If this child could make it out so easily, they really needed to step up their security. While his onion rings fried, she brought him a cup of coffee. "On the house."
|
the man looked at her solemnly "you think you could do a better job lady?" he asked scoffing a bit. "my staff are professionals..." he said tapping his fingers on the table waiting for his food "Youre a single mother? thats a surprise..." he said saracastically
Juno growled at him and kicked him as hard as he could under the table making the man yell out. "dont talks to her like that...!!! shes a very nice lady..." Juno said the man looked at him "why do you care about some waitress in a diner anyways?" he asked glaring at juno Juno looked at him "she does a better job than you do you f**king a**hole!!!" he said "i like her!!!" he said the man looked at Juno angerly "thats it!!! youre coming with me AND youre on lock down for a week plus no supper tonight..." he said grabbing Juno by the arm starting to drag him out of of the diner |
"Out of curiosity, what makes you think I'm a single mother?" She asked, raising an eyebrow as she set his onion rings down on the table. "Besides, I didn't say a damn word about your staff." Gently picking up the young boy before he could drag off the little blonde, she held him against her waist. "I'm not 'some waitress'. I own this establishment. You know something else? That food on the table there?" She pointed to where she'd set his order. "You walk on out of here without paying and that's stealing."
"It's men like you that give the good cops a bad name." Setting Juno down at her side, slightly behind her so the cop would have to go around her to take him, she explained, "Besides, I doubt you have any authority to punish him, given you're an officer and not a foster care official. You don't have any right to threaten him. I'll take him back to the state home myself. Pay for your food and get out." |
the cop looked at her then slapped down a twenty "keep the change..." he said solemnly and left the premises.
Juno looked at Cecilia "hes gonna get me in trouble once he files a report on me... il be in big trouble..." he whined "theyl punish me back at the foster home..." he said "please dont make me go back..." he whined being held agaisnt her waist her buried his face into her chest. |
"Sorry, sweetie, but you should've thought about that before you ran away, and especially before you kicked the man." She crouched down so she was eye level with him and gently stroked his soft blonde hair. He was a moody boy, but a sweetheart. "I'll be sure to tell them of your good deeds today, though."
|
Juno slowly nodded tears forming in his eyes again and he covered his face not wanting to show it.
Jackie then came down "mommy?" she asked "wheres he going?" she asked curiously just then a man walked in a a told her he was from the foster place |
"Jacqueline Smith, you march yourself upstairs right now! I've tried being nice about telling you to stay in the apartment and you refuse to listen. This is your last warning, young lady!" Cecilia scolded, pointing towards the kitchen where the stairs up to their apartment were. She didn't understand why her daughter was refusing to follow the simplest of directions, but it was certainly getting on her nerves.
"Oh, sure, you're from the 'foster agency'." Cecilia said with a roll of her eyes. It was too fast and too coincidental given that she'd just called the police not that long ago. Whoever it was, was a liar. "Get out of my diner." |
the man rolled his eyes and walked out of the diner
Jackie walked back upstairs and finished the movie sitting on the couch Juno looked up at Cecilia "where do i go now?" he asked cocking his head a bit |
"For now, just sit yourself down. Your food's probably gotten cold by now, but I'll get you another juice." Cecilia headed to the kitchen and filled another glass full of the juice from earlier and brought it to him, then sat down across from him at the table. "After I make some arrangements for people to take care of things here, we'll drive to the group home that was looking after you." Before she could go anywhere, she needed someone to watch Jackie and also someone to take care of the food orders. "There's only one in this region, so I'm sure I know which it is."
|
Juno nodded looking at her his blue eyes pouring into hers he then looked down and finsihed his chicken and fries. he pushed the plate away from himself and looked at Cecilia again "thank you..." he said slowly reaching out to take her hand as she sat down across from him.
|
She gave his hand a gentle squeeze when he took hers. "Well, we'd better get a move on, I suppose. If we don't, the agency will be closed by the time we get there." Smiling softly at the boy, she stood from the table and led him to the front counter, where she gave orders for a substitute to be called to cook and for one of the girls to go upstairs and keep an eye on Jacqueline. After that, she led Juno out to the car and picked him up, setting him in the back seat and buckling him in before giving him an affectionate ruffle of his hair.
After climbing into the driver's seat and starting up the car, she smiled at the little blonde through the rear-view mirror before pulling out. "Tell me about yourself, Juno." |
Juno looked at her "I....Im nine years old and i likes disney alot" he said giggling a bit looking at Cecilia in the mirror. he then blankly looked out the window as they drove having never been in a car in years.
Jackie was getting ready for bed at home slipping her night gown on she quickly jumped into bed pulling the covers over herself and slowly drifting off to sleep. |
"Disney, huh?" She said, smiling. It was kind of surprising that his speech was so poor and unarticulated, given his age, but she didn't say anything. "Jackie likes Disney, too. What's your favorite movie?"
---- Back at the diner, Belle, the older waitress who had picked up Jackie from school, came upstairs. A close friend who was practically family, she knocked to be polite, but entered before the door was answered. "Jackie?" She called, heading to the girl's room. The door was open, so she knocked to be polite but still stuck her head in. "Jackie, sweetheart, what on Earth are you doing? It's three thirty in the afternoon, it's not bedtime yet..." Crossing her arms, she shook her head disapprovingly. "What's gotten into you? You haven't eaten dinner yet, and you didn't even take a bath before getting changed, meaning you dirtied your nightgown for nothing, just for your little drama show." With a loud sigh, she beckoned for the girl to get out of bed. "Change back into your dayclothes and come meet me in the kitchen, we're gonna surprise your Momma with a nice meal." Shutting the door to give the girl some privacy, she headed straight for the kitchen and began taking a mental inventory of what they had on hand. |
Juno looked at her "my favorite is aladdin or maybe the princess and the frog cause i likes da shadow mans..." he said giggling a bit
Jackie threw her days clothes back on and went to help Belle prepare the dinner for her mother. she walked into the kitchen and stood next to Belle |
"Not bad choices at all~" She said, chuckling along with him. "My personal favorite is The Jungle Book."
Belle was bustling about, gathering up ingredients and supplies, then handed Jackie a bowl of vegetables and set a step stool in front of the kitchen sink. "Be a dear and wash these up for me, please~" |
Juno giggled at bit and looked at Cecilia "i..i wish i had a mommy as nices as you.." he said in midyawn.
Jackie then started washing the vegetables in the sink then handing them to Belle |
"I'm sure you'll find one even nicer soon, Juno, just give it time," She cheerfully replied. Cecilia had faith in the system. She knew it had to be hard for him, but Rome wasn't built in a day. "You've only been up for adoption for two months, after all. But the more you keep running away, the more you hurt your chances. Promise me you'll behave from now on, okay?"
---- Belle took each vegetable as it was handed to her and cut it deftly on a cutting board, putting each thing in separate dishes. Once they were finished, she had lettuce, tomato, and green peppers chopped finely. After that, she tossed ground meat into a pan and started to fry it, then quickly started measuring flour, baking powder, and other ingredients into a bowl. "Would you like to mix this up, dearie?" |
Juno nodded yes "i pwomise..." he said lightly
Jackie then quickly nodded and washed her hands and then took the spoon and started to mix it realy fast. She was pretty good at it considering she had done it with her mother several times. |
She raised an eyebrow at his baby-talk. It was definitely a part of his speech patterns, she'd already noticed it before, but she continued to be curious about exactly why he still spoke that way at his age. "Hey, Juno? How long've you been out of school?"
---- "No no, like this." She took the little girl's hand and slowed down her pace, also making sure the girl scraped the sides every few strokes she stirred. "If you mix these powdery ingredients fast like that, they'll fly right out of the bowl and waste." After showing Jackie how to properly stir it, she went and mixed up the frying meat for a moment before returning and adding vegetable shortening to the mixture the little girl was stirring. "There, now stir it until it crumbles into teeny tiny pieces, please." |
Juno looked at her then looked down "i havnts beens in schwool since i was fwive..." he said looking out the window now.
Jackie then grumbled a very nasty name under her breath because she wasnt very fond of Belle at ALL. "i know how to stir..." she sneered at Belle. |
