It was giant village where high-rank shinobi lived. A brunette child with a long maroon tail, and big fuzzy ears lived in this town too. She lived with a man named Hatake Kakashi, a jounin rank ninja. She was his "pet". She couldn't litterally be adopted, but she wasn't old enough to be a roomie either. She was only twelve, and was very troublesome. She called him "Master". "Nyuu...master..." She yawned, scratching her head. Being kept inside all day was no fun. Espically to someone like Hatake Neko. "Mmm...?" The masked jounin asked, reading his orange book. "I wanna go outside and play around for a bit." "Saa...thats fine, have fun, but dont go far. Understood? Theres a girl going around by the name of 'Iji' whos been stealing things from people around town." "Hai--! Yes sir!" She smiled, getting up from the table quickly. Outside, the wind was blowing gently. "That feels nice nya.." She meowed. krrrshh krsshh. 'What was that?!' She thought. krrshh krssshh. She stepped back, taking action. |
A navy-haired girl scrambled along a tree branch toward the end to peer into one of the streets of Konohagakure. Her gray t-shirt was torn from the effort getting into the giant tree, also having the knees of her blue shorts dirtied. Her left red eye and right silver eye were darkening and brightening up as she moved through sun patches in the leaves, her nails clawing at the wood.
Krrssh krsssh The leaves made a whispy sound as she moved along, biting on her tongue as she moved, her eyes narrowed like a rat going for cheese. |
Hatake Neko glared at the one scrambling in the tree.
"Nyao! Whos there?! I have you know, I'm trained under the famous copy ninja Kakashi. The strongest ninja in the land! He'll chop your head off if you dare lay a finger on me, nyao!" |
A girl's voice cut into the thoughts of the scrambling one in the tree. Iji, the girl in the tree, pushed her lips into a pout at her famous monkey work being interrupted. She crawled to the edge of a branch, peering out as she heard the last words.
"Copy ninja, huh? Sounds interesting." Iji proclaimed, faking bravery when she knew she was as much a coward as the recently compared-to-rat. |
She squinted her eyes, who was this girl? She looked familiar.
Hatake Neko gasped. "Are you...?!" |
The opposite girl seemed to recognize her. Iji found her oddly familiar as well and cocked her head, raising an eyebrow to match.
"Iji. Nice to meet you?" She tried introducing, leaning even further on the tree branch, ignoring the fact that the branch had creaked considerably. |
Hatake Neko stepped back.
She knew this girl. This was the child that all the jounin in town talked about. So she was the "Iji" girl. She was a theif. Kakashi told her prior that she wasn't allowed near her, and should always tell him of her appearences, incase of theft. Hatake Neko studied her torn pants, shirt and dirty face. "You're that girl!" |
Iji grinned, leaning over the branch, making it crack. She ignored it.
"Yes, I'm a girl. Thank you for noticing!" She added happily, but it was short lived as the branch broke beneath. A string of inappropriate curses left her mouth as she crashed into the ground on her back. She gave a short groan, peeking an eye open to peer up at the opposite girl. She huffed dirt from her mouth. "Owie." She managed to squeak. |
Hatake Neko watched as the child fell from the tree. She smelled of a dead rat.
"Eww...you stink nyuu..." Hatake Neko said, clenching her nose, her ears bent back. "Blech! Yucky!" She stared at her, noting the dirt once more. "Sensei told me to stay away from you, I cant help but think you're need of something, ( besides a shower...)" She thought for a moment before snapping her fingers. "Oh! I know, nya! You hungry?" She asked. Reaching into her pocket. "I've got some snacks I packed before I left. Here!" Hatake Neko handed Iji her bag of treats. "It's onigiri!" |
Iji didn't mind the comment of her stench as she stared with wide eyes at the treats that were handed to her. She'd not eaten in a while and the temptation to gobble them up like a pig was overwhelming, but she forced herself to remember her manners. She took one of the treats, hesitating before she took a bite.
"Hm~ You gonna tell your sensei you were hangin' 'round me or no?" She asked past a mouthful of food, curiosity making her ask straight up. |
Hatake Neko puffed her lip. "BAKA! OF COURSE NOT! If i did, i wouldn't be able to sit for a week, duh! Besides that, you're a criminal. Of course i wouldn't say anything, nyao!"
She crossed her arms around her chest in the defense of the comment. "And you'd better not say anything either. Or else...i'll take my onigiri back and you can eat bugs and dirt again!" |
Iji crinkled her nose, the corner of her mouth lifting. The girl was interesting, but...
"Hmph..." She grunted, then bit into the rest of the onigiri in her hand, glancing at the cat girl. "You say you stay with the copy-nin? Hatake Kakashi, no?" She asked, remembering all the stories she'd heard of the infamous shinobi. |
Hatake Neko nodded. "Yep! He's my master nya."
She looked at Iji. "You know, your hair's so greasy! You need a bath." Hatake Neko pulled a thin strip and looked at her own hair. "Yet...I'm the same.." She sighed. "i hate baths nyuu! They're horrible! I've got to be forced to take one, or else I wont do it. Is it the same with you too?" |
Iji blinked, glancing at her.
"Mm? Well... There's no one to force me to take a bath," She said slowly, suddenly feeling thankful for being on her own, "I hate baths. They make me feel sticky, but... I wouldn't mind one now..." She paused, glancing around, crinkling her nose again and letting her tongue stick out in distaste. "But, I'll just jump in the river near the trainin' fields..." She mused thoughtfully. |
"OK! Lets do that! It sounds like fun, nya and it's not a bath, it's only swimming!"
She grinned wide, "Come!" Hatake Neko said while pulling Iji to the river. "It'll be fun nya!" |
Iji had no choice, but to follow. She was excited to get clean anyway, so why wouldn't she follow?
As soon as they got to the river, Iji made no hesitation as she leapt into the river. She was careful to stay off to the side since she wasn't a good swimmer, but a good doggy-paddler. However, that wouldn't help her for long. So, to avoid any accidents, she remained where her feet could touch the soft, squishiness of the bank. "Eep! I haven't been in here for a while!" Iji squeaked at the shock of the water pooling around her. She felt the filth of her earlier encounter with the ground wash away. |
Hatake Neko cannon-ball'd into the water. "Woo!"
The water went everywhere. "I can swim great!" She blushed. "Master taught me when I was younger, nya." She sighed, looking at herself. "I should'a stopped by the house before jumping in...I dont like my shirt sticking to me. Blech!" |
Iji smirked, then pushed her lips into a thoughtful pout as she floundered in the water.
"So, your sensei teaches ya a lot of things, yes?" She murmured under her breath, then spoke up, "My shirt feels heavy now!" She announced in agreement to Neko's sticky shirt comment. |
"Yep! He does!" Hatake Neko nodded. She looked at Iji and herself, "Gah, i hate this feeling...it's horrible. My fur is all wet, I've got my shirt and jeans sticking to me, nyuu! I hate this."
She climbed up onto the bank and sat in the grass, balled up part of her shirt and began straining it. "There...thats a bit better. Heh." |
Iji laughed, then crawled out of the river and shook herself free of the water.
"Gah! I feel cold now!" She complained, gripping her arms tightly and shivering to prove it. |

"We'll at least you SMELL BETTER." Hatake Neko snickered.
She relaxed against a fallen tree with her arms behind her head, while begining to think. 'I wonder what time sensei wanted me home...i'm already in enough trouble for being with this girl, i'll probably get into more trouble for being in the river nyuu. Not only that, but i disobeyed him when i left the forest to come here...' "I'll go home later..." She sighed, but then turned it into a fake grin. "I've gotta dry off or else it'll be obvious I was with you nya." |
Iji nodded, secretly taking a whiff under her arms by stretching them over her head to see if the cat girl was right...
Indeed, she did smell much better. More like water (duh) rather than a dead animal. "Good idea..." She murmured at last, then yawned. "Say, what would your sensei DO if he found out ya hung out with me, hmm?" She wondered curiously. |
Hatake Neko stretched "Well...first he'd lecture me...then he'd--"
"Koneko." A voice murmered. She shot up, gasping. "N-no!" "Sa...You've been naughty, Koneko chan. Disobeying sensei, wandering off, and being with a criminal? I thought I taught you better. Tsk tsk." She turned around, without a doubt, her sensei was behind her. "Th-that! No!" "No more lying." He shushed her. "Pakkun," Kakashi whispered. "Yes Kakashi?" A small brown pug appeared. "What's up?" "Ninja Pack Defensive Formation, 2B." He winked, moving closer to Hatake Neko. Pakkun ran up and growled at Iji, showing his teeth. "Move an inch, and you're facing death via blood loss." "Master..." Hatake Neko bowed. |
Iji practically jumped when the jounin seemed to magically appear. The dog was no surprise afterwards, however. Iji looked at it with her signature expression; crinkled nose and mouth twitched in a crooked sneer.
"Greaaat." She drawled sarcastically, but decided against finishing her sarcastic remark and stayed quiet. After all, she wasn't fond of dying because of blood loss. Actually, she wasn't fond of dying PERIOD. |
"Koneko." Kakashi sighed, raising his hands. "Up."
"Hai..." She said quietly, slowly rising to his hand motions. Pakkun watched Iji closely. His eyes fixed on his target. "You're not going anywhere, thief." Kakashi grabbed Hatake Neko by the hand and brought her over to Iji, "You've made friends with her? Even after my precautions?" "I......I-I..." She began to break down. "I'm... s-sorry sensei..." Kakashi sighed, looking the Iji girl in the eye. |
Personally, Iji didn't see it as a totally bad thing. She'd never steal from the Neko girl, or the jounin. The girl gave her food, for Kami's sake! And of course, the copy-nin was... Well, you get it. When the jounin moved, his gaze dropping toward her eyes, she immediately dropped her eyes to the ground, crinkling her nose again and wondering if the jounin was ever going to give her the opportunity to run off to find a nice tree to sleep in. She was exhausted from swimming and the fall from the previous tree.
"Hmmmph..." Iji mumbled, hoping that this Neko wasn't going to be in as much trouble as it seemed... And herself, as well. |
"Maaa..." Kakashi looked at Hatake Neko. "...How close are you to her?"
She rubbed her eyes with her sleeve. "I-I--..somewhat close..?" "Somewhat? I don't believe you're telling me the truth, Koneko chan." "We're...f-friends..." She bowed her head in embarrassment. Kakashi nodded. "Yes...from what I witnessed, it seemed that way." Hatake Neko looked up. "W-witnessed?" "I watched you two, Koneko. Your actions against this girl. Personally, I don't know weither to be proud of your kindness ...or to be ashamed of your lack of sense." She rubbed her eyes once more, staying silent. Pakkun sighed, he hated these sappy lectures. |
Iji raised a curious eyebrow, pushing her lips into a famous pout. Was this common with the two? And, did if he know her for her reputation, how come he just said 'this girl' or 'her'? It was a bother and she was getting sleepy... And slightly embarrassed in being caught up.
"Erm, do I have to stay here?" Iji blurted, immediately feeling dumb for saying it so quietly. She usually had a big mouth and was a little louder than just a feeble grumble. |
"Ahh...Of course you do," Kakashi laughed, "You're a criminal. Its my job as a jounin shinobi to arrest you."
Hatake Neko gasped, hugging the silver haired nin, "No...master, dont do that...! ...Please...nyuu..." Kakashi studied her, she was shivering. Clearly she was more afraid of him than the criminal standing before them. How pathetic. He sighed, snapping his fingers. "Pakkun, decease formation." "Yes sir." Pakkun said, poofing back to his original postion. "You're free, however...I request you do something for me before you go." He said to Iji, interest in his voice. |
Iji felt a sweatdrop run down her face in distress.
"Of course you do-" She decided to rephrase her response, "I mean... Uh, what sort of request...?" |
"Heh..." Kakashi smirked.
"Koneko chan, why don't you tell her what my request is? I'm sure you know what it is." He nudged her shoulder, she grimaced, wiping her face. "H-He wants y-you to confess to b-being a theif to the town." |
Iji didn't know whether to snap at the jounin for such a suggestion or to simply bolt for the nearest tree. Instead, she huffed, folding her arms over her chest.
"You hate me and you've not even gotten to know me...." She accused, poking her tongue out of her mouth for a second, before pulling it back in. She looked at her feet. "Fine, I'll submit to your silly request, sir." She grumbled almost incoherently. |
"Shh! Don't mock him nya! This is a simple request, believe me, nyuu!" Hatake Neko whispered to Iji.
Kakashi heard her words, "So... that's not good enough for the thief... mmm? OK. I was going to let you off without a sore backside, but now you can have the same punishment as my Koneko here, and... you'll being getting extra for that mouth of yours." He snapped his fingers and called Pakkun once more. "Ninja Pack Defensive formation, 3C in action. GO!" "Yes sir!" Pakkun barked, he suddenly disappeared, only to be brought back by a cloud of smoke, just like before, only this time, he had ahold of Iji's ankle. "Oh... now you've done it!" She lowered her head. |
