[ Potion Wars ] - Spanking computer role playing game

Hello Everyone,

I'm a long time semi-lurker here. I just wanted to let you all know that I've released the first episode of a text-based computer role-playing game with spanking that I've been working on for the past year and a half or so. You can find information about it (including how to download it) here:

spankingrpgs.com

The game is written in Python using Pygame (thanks to Zekel for making me aware of Pygame). You can get stand-alone executables for Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I plan on releasing the source code this weekend, once I've licensed it properly.

If you have any problems running the game, or getting your hands on it, let me know.

Note: You may have to make the file executable to get it to run on Ubuntu. Once you've downloaded and unzipped the file, right click on the PotionWars program, and select "Properties." Go to the "Permissions" tab, and make sure the "Allow executing file as program" box is checked.

Edit: For those of you coming to the thread for the first time, there are some minor spoilers starting to show up around pages 6 or 7 (the first few pages are just crash and bug reports). So I would recommend against reading through the thread before trying to play the game if you care about that kind of thing.

No seeds on the Windows torrent. I'd like to try this.

Any chance of a direct link? Maybe use a site like Mediafire?

That's because it looks like the tracker for my torrent died, sorry about that. I've reuploaded the torrent with a different tracker, and currently my backup computer is downloading both. Note that I couldn't get Transmissions to download the torrent however, and I don't have time to play with other clients. So if you have trouble finding the seed, try using Vuze. The client used shouldn't matter, but I'm new to the torrent creating business, so it's possible that I created the torrent in such a manner that only Vuze can find the seed. I'll try to play with it more in the next few days.

I'd rather not, because sites like MediaFire are flaky, and slow. Torrents are much more efficient from a bandwidth perspective, and once you get a few people in the swarm, blindingly fast. Plus, they scale better to large program sizes. If however, people are still having trouble getting the file when I come home this evening, I'll look into posting a link on MediaFire.

Using tixati, still can't see any seeds. Peer list shows someone from the UK with likewise 0% progress, and someone from the US that I can't connect to. Maybe that's you?

I tried Vuze before and didn't like it, so I'm not reinstalling. I can wait until you get it working.

I was having your problem Zekel, but I just redownloaded the torrent file and it's working now.

Now it started downloading for me too, without even redownloading. Nice!

Edit:
Alright, I gave it a try. Right at the gates, I got a message that someone was calling me and approaching me, but when I select "talk", the only option is the guard, to whom I already talked. When I cancel, I get no mention of that person anymore :/. I played a bit further, talked to someone called Maria, and when I leave, she mentions someone named Elise, who wasn't there before but is now... Maybe I was going too fast but the messages seem a bit confusing.
Looks like there's a lot of story and characters, so I'll have to try again when I more time. Well done getting something this big made.

Downloading. I'll seed for at least a day or so.

I can't seem to get it to download with a torrent either. I just downloaded the first one on the list of yours, Vuze, and it's not finding any seeders.

*It did download, but now I come across other problems. The windows version, closes itself right after character creation. That little black box says something about some kind of error, but it goes away too fast for me to really see.

The Ubuntu version, I might just not know how to work at all, but I don't know where to change the permission to execute it as a program, not on Windows 8.1 at least.

That may have something to do with the fact that you're running on Windows 8.1, while I compiled it on Windows 7. One option is that you may be able to right click on the program, and run it in Compatibility mode for Windows 7 (I'm not sure if they still have that for 8). If that doesn't work, try the following:

1. Open the folder directly above the folder where you downloaded the game. So, if you downloaded the game to C:\Users\AKA\Downloads, go to the AKA folder. Hold down SHIFT and right click on the "Downloads" folder. There should be an open to "Open command window here." Select that option.

2. A command prompt should open (It will be a black box, with a blinking cursor). Type "PotionWars.exe" and hit enter. This will run the game in that command prompt. Once the game crashes, the prompt will stay open, with the error message, which you can then send to me.

Unfortunately, my Windows 7 partition decided this would be a *perfect* time to get a corrupted boot sector, so I can't boot into Windows. Furthermore, I'm currently in a different city for an internship, so I don't have my install CD's on hand.

If you can't get it working, it is ridiculously easy to install Ubuntu on a Windows machine. Seriously, it's as simple as installing any other program. See the downloads page of my blog for details.

Your confusion is because of a bug. In a rather bonehead move, I failed to consider the possibility of the player talking to the guard first (even though that would be the obvious thing to do). I expected the player to just go straight into Avaricum Square. I've fixed the code so that if you try to talk to the guard, it doesn't break anything. Unfortunately, due to the Windows 7 problems above, I couldn't compile it onto Windows. You can try installing Ubuntu (again, very very easy for Windows users) and run the newly updated Ubuntu executable, or just make sure not to talk to the guard when starting the game. Just travel straight to Avaricum Square.
