Trick or Treat {for W1nchester}

It was Halloween evening and Dean and Sam Winchester, ages 7 and 11 respectively, were getting ready to go out with their dad. It had taken some SERIOUS begging, pleading and generally being annoying in order to convince the man to actually take them out on a holiday that sort of glorified all the things that the eldest Winchester hunted but they boys, being little boys, wanted to do something that was normal on Halloween.

Or more to the point Sammy had wanted to do it and his big brother had gone to bat for him with their dad because that was just the way that Dean operated.

Dean was currently standing around waiting for his little brother to finish getting ready, the older Winchester boy dressed pretty normally for himself but he'd added some makeup to make himself look like a slasher from an old horror movie or something.

Sammy on the other hand was a werewolf but not the type that their daddy hunted, since of course the littlest Winchester didn't know anything about that sort of thing. No this was the cute, commercialized version, the boy wearing a hoodie that was complete with ears on the hood and a tail hanging from the back.

"C'mon Daaaaddy," the little boy said, looking at John with pleading and impatient hazel eyes, trying to get the man to get the show on the road.

It wasn't that John Winchester didn't want his boys to be happy. It was more that Halloween was the perfect time for any monster, real monster, to strike without it being too noticeable. And he didn't like his children being put out into that unnecessary risk. Also, seeing people dressed up as commercialized versions of the things he hunted made him annoyed.

But, kids were kids. And so finally he acquiesced. Dean had gotten dressed up like a slasher from an old movie and Sammy had dressed up as a werewolf. Honestly, both his kids looked damn cute. Not scary, even though Dean would hate to be called cute, today or any other day for that matter.

He didn't need to dress up. He was scary enough as is. He came out of the bathroom after doing his business and looked down to Sammy. "I'm comin', I'm comin'." He said, heading out of the motel room, still prepared with weapons for anything that could pop up. He got his kids into the car and turned around in his seat to look at both of them.

"No running off. You stay exactly where I can see you. No crossing the road unless I'm with ya, and we're only gonna stay out for two hours. Alright?"

Dean was well aware of the dangers that going out on Halloween presented, he'd heard that lecture enough times to be able to recite it by heart. But even so he wanted his little brother to be happy and Sammy wanted to go out so that left Dean in the position of convincing their dad that was what they needed to do. It had taken quite a bit of talking on his part but he had finally managed it, much to Sammy's delight.

The seven year old was currently being impatient, his gaze going to his daddy when he came out of the bathroom. "You're slow," the little guy pointed out, strands of his mop of messy hair poking out from his hood as he gazed up at his dad. Way up because the man was tall and Sammy was decidedly not.

Dean snorted at his brother and took Sammy by the hand to lead him outside, the pair making their way to the Impala and clambering into the backseat. Both pairs of eyes shifted toward their daddy when he turned to talk to them and Dean groaned at the warnings. "Daaad," he said, looking at the man. "I handle myself just fine when you have to go away for work." He didn't say 'hunt' since Sammy was still in the dark about what it was that their dad actually did but he still wanted to make sure that he pointed out the fact that he could take care of himself.

"Uh huh." John grunted when Sammy said he was slow, the man heading out and locking the door, having his two sons head into the car. He smiled a bit to himself as Dean took his little brother's hand and led him to the Impala. John got into the driver's seat himself and he turned around, giving them a set of rules to abide by.

He looked at Dean when his eldest began to whine about how he could handle himself. John just shook his head at the boy.

"That's different, Dean. Now, either you agree to my rules, or you can stay here." He told him, which would put a damper on the night, for Dean and for Sammy. And then he glanced between his youngest and his oldest.

"And I shouldn't hafta warn you, but if you break any of those rules, either of ya, we're comin' back and you're gonna go to bed with a red butt. Got me, kiddos?"

Sammy smiled when his daddy just agreed that he was slow, the little guy allowing his big brother to take his hand and lead him to the car since that was pretty normal for the child. As strange as it was Dean was just as much an authority figure in the little boy's life as his father was, if not even more so at times.

Once they were all in the car both boys looked at their dad as he gave out his rules and of course Dean had to point out that he could handle himself. He'd been trained practically his entire life for dealing with stuff and taking care of his brother so he didn't think that he needed a bunch of dumb baby rules.

Which he pointed out only to have that shot down by their dad.

"Okay fine," he said, not thinking that it was different but he didn't want to be left behind even if he maintained that he was only doing this because Sammy wanted to.

Sammy made a face when his daddy went on to tell them what was gonna happen if they broke any of his rules. "Don't wanna do that," the child pointed out, not that any kid ever wanted to do that but still.

"We got it Dad," Dean said dutifully since he knew the man was going to want verbal confirmation.

John nodded when Dean agreed. "Thank you, Dean." He said to him and then told the both of them, basically, if they broke the rules they would be sent to bed early after getting a damn sound spanking. He wasn't going to mess around on Halloween. It was a full moon, which was even worse. And he wasn't going to trust anyone, follow his kids to every door...

"Then don't break the rules, babe." He said to Sammy as he said that he didn't want that. Then he looked to Dean as he confirmed that they understood. "Alright." He said, and started the car and drove to a nicely populated area of the town, parking and he got out of the car with his kids. He looked around. "Well, let's go around the block." He suggested, and took ahold of Sammy's hand, leading his kids up to one house and let them work their cute, childish magic.

Dean knew that their dad was going to be uptight on this particular night, there were just too many factors at play for him to be any other way really, but at the same time he wanted Sammy to be able to be a normal kid for a change. That was all that he ever really wanted, his brother to be happy and he sacrificed a lot in order to make that happen.

So he agreed with his dad that he'd keep the rules in mind and then confirmed that they understood the consequences for breaking those rules.

Which of course were well established consequences seeing as their daddy was something of a hard ass even on the best of occasions.

Both little boys chatted with one another as their daddy drove away from the motel and to a populated area, the sounds of children laughing and various other noises filling the air. Sammy was excited and he bounced out of the Impala and probably would have bounded off if his daddy hadn't snagged his hand before he had the chance.

Which was a pretty good save on the man's part.

"C'mon Sammy let's go," Dean said, taking up a position on the other side of his brother just in case something did happen.

John had caught Sammy's hand easily as he nearly bounded off without them. "Sammy." He said, his voice low in warning. "You haven't even gotten any candy yet. Don't make me take you back. Stay with me." He said to him, watching Dean go on the other side of the kid and they went up to the first house.

The kids knocked and John hung back, forcing a smile at the 'witch' that opened the door. She waited for the 'trick or treat' before she gave a damn good witches' cackle and reached in her 'cauldron', giving each kid a handful of candy. "You be safe, boys!" She said in her voice. "Not all witches are as nice as me!" She said and John snorted, smirking some at that. "Say thank you for the candy." John prompted the kids before she shut the door on them.

Sammy looked up at his daddy when the man said his name in that low, warning voice of his, the child making a face at the warning that was issued. "Sorry sir," he said quietly, knowing that giving attitude right now would be as good as asking his daddy to take him back to the motel and he didn't want to do that so he gave the answer that he figured his daddy was waiting for.

After that they started walking down the block and when they reached the first house Dean took Sammy's hand and lead the way to the door, the elder boy knocking and then looking at the 'witch' that opened the door. He heard his dad snorting from where he hung back however he didn't respond to that one and instead just nudged his brother and together they said, "Trick or treat!"

Sammy said it much more enthusiastically than his brother and he grinned at the candy that the woman gave to them. He was carrying a plastic pumpkin that was hollow while Dean just had a bag himself and the boy gazed down into the bucket at the candy before looking up again when prompted to say thanks. "Thank you," the little guy said cutely, Dean mirroring that before the two of them turned and headed back to where their daddy was waiting.

John nodded when his son apologized. "It's alright. Just don't do it again." He advised the boy before he went ahead and took his kids to the first house on the block and watched them as they knocked on the door and reminded them to thank her.

The witch grinned. "You're very welcome." She said before closing the door. As the kids came back he leaned over and peered into their containers, whistling.

"She really was a nice witch, huh?" He commented as he saw the huge handful that she had put into both of their bags. He took Sammy's hand again and continued to lead him and Dean all around the block, hitting every house on that block. Already, their bucket and bag were pretty heavy. It'd take them weeks to eat all that.

"How about two more houses, then we head on back?" John said. "You both already have a ton of candy."
