Lance, the official driver of Bus 5, was torn between focusing on the road, and yelling over his shoulder for all of the rowdy kids on board to PLEASE be QUIET. At the crack of dawn this morning, the campers had congregated at the camp's pickup lot in Vermont. Now they were en route to rural Maine, where Camp Fletchinder lay sprawled out across hundreds of acres. Lance, who was 20, had been a counselor there for two years. And while it was the best summer job he'd ever had by far, he still found himself getting a little frustrated with the rowdy campers, who were aged six to fifteen. He nearly missed an important turn when a wad of chewed bubblegum pelted him in the back of the head, landing in his spiky hair. "All right, who threw that?" he demanded, having to force himself not to take his eyes off the road.

14-year-old Corrin Berlitz panicked. She'd been asked to accompany her little sister Verity on this trip. Now, reaching back, she tried to pluck the little girl upside the head. "I'm so sorry, Mr. St. George. VERRY, WAS THAT YOU? YOU APOLOGIZE NOW!"

"OW! Cory, knock it off!" eight-year-oldVerity batted her sister's hands away. "It wasn't me. My gum is still in my mouth, see?" Verity stuck her tongue out, exposing a spit-covered wad of blue raspberry Bubble Tape. "It was that little kid from New York! The one who keeps flipping off truck drivers!"
"Didn't Hilbert tell you three times to keep the gum in your mouth?" Hilda half-growled and half-groaned at her younger sister, Hera. "So why don't you? ...Never mind, I know why. This time it's me telling you to keep the gum in your mouth. That, or spit it out now."
Hera shrugged. She removed the remaining bubblegum from her mouth and stuck it on her brother's arm.

Corrin wasn't satisfied. "Dont be gross, berryhead! Noone wants to look at the contents of your mouth. Do that one.more time and I'm throwing that gum away!"
Veritys neighbor and friend, Astrid, smuggled Verity more gum in case Corrin confiscated what she already had. Meanwhile, Hilbert stuck Heras wad of gum on her nose. It looked kind of cute there, so 15-year-old Daisy Mizuno snapped a pic.

Hera socked Hilbert in the arm with all the strength her small body could muster. Hilda rapped her head with her knuckles in response.
"Daisy, aren't we there YET? nine-year-old Lily Mizuno groaned, clutching her stomach. "I'm going to, like, be car sick or something..."
"Code green! Code green!" Lily's seat mate (and younger sister) six-year-old Misty yelled. "She's gonna blow! Brace for impact!"
Children screamed in mock horror as Lily vomited into the brown paper bag her parents had had the sense to provide her with for the ride over. Disgusted, Lilly opened the window and dropped the puke bag out.
"HEY! Littering from a car window is a big ticket!" Lance snapped, having caught a glimpse of what happened in the mirror. "You're lucky the cops didn't see!"

"Like, get over it, Mr. St. George." Mint fought not to make a face. "If I have to be trapped in the car with the smell of puke, Im totally moving out."
"Oh, poor sweet." Daisy's arms went around Lily. "Misty, you stop making fun of your sister right now! Im sorry, Mr. St. George. . . Mr. Sitsuke. Maybe we'd better just walk."

"Thank God we're almost there..." Lance grumbled. "...Hey, you boys in the back! I see that cherry bomb. You throw it in here, and we're going to have a big problem!"
13-year-old Michael Garcia quickly pocketed the item. He had no intention of throwing it in here, but when they got to camp it would be a different story.

Six-year-old Jamie Edison hung bat-style from the back of her seat. As they rode along, she sang boisterously, "Sometimes i feel that life's a bore, and so I go off to explore. I'm tired of hills and mountain rings, just take a look at everything! Everything, EVERYTHING, THE WORLD DEPENDS ON EVERYTHIIIIIIIIIIING!"
10-year-old Rosa Rhodes and her best friend Moon sang a quiet duet. All seemed to be right with the world for everyone except poor Lance.

A few agonizing minutes later, Bus 5 pulled to a stop in a grassy lot lined with trees. "All right, we're here!" Lance announced. "Everybody out! Go to the tent and grab some lunch, and the other counselors and I will be around to sort you into your bunks soon!"

The kids poured out of the truck. Rosa and Hilbert screamed at eachother about politics as lunch was prepared. Five-year-old Wally pursued eight-year-old Nathan with a makeshift stick weapon. Jamie used Michael's back as a slide. Moon walked hand-in-hand with Serena.
