The girl looked upon her new home. She had wondered what a place named Gallowhill would look like, but it was just a modest castle. She had to admit that it looked pretty, standing on the hill surrounded by the woods in the twilight.

Margot, the youngest of fifteen children, was a Giger of Bluemoat, a castle which was larger and closer to Highgarden than Gallowhill, and she wasn’t very pleased about becoming her father’s cousin’s ward. . . but still, she felt excited when she started crossing the drawbridge with her escort.

As soon as they passed through the castle gates, the dogs in the kennels started barking. Margot saw that the household was gathered in the outer ward.

She climbed off her horse with effortless grace. She was a beautiful girl of eleven with blue eyes and brown hair that was currently bound up in two braids.

Margot was welcomed by the lord of the castle, the strong and burly Raymun Giger. He showed the girl a broad grin and placed his hands on the girls shoulder, squeezing them with suprising gentleness for such a warlike man. His raven hair was short, but his beard quite bushy. Yes, he probably could have belonged in the North, but his clothes were in the elegant style of the high courts, just modest enough for a man owning a castle of this size without seeming too opulent.
"Welcome, Margot lass. You bring us great joy in coming here. I hope my humble castle will make you feel at home.", he said heartily before letting go of the young girl. While he was imposing he seemed nice.

Margot only vaguely remembered meeting Lord Raymun (she had been very little), but the way he grinned and squeezed her shoulders immediately gave her comfort. She smiled back.


"It's kind of you to say so, my lord. Your castle is very pretty." She couldn't wait to explore it and the surrounding woods.

"Oh, you think so? As far as castles go its modest, but if there ever was trouble our enemies would find out that it is quite sturdy.", Raymun said and turned to his side were a tall woman was standing. Her features were harsh but there was some wrinkles when she smiled, softening the expression somewhat. She wore a more humble red and blue dress and her hair was very long and reddish. "This is my wife, Alison. Say hello to her.", the old lord said wheras the women reached out and took Margots hand into hers.

Her first impression of Lady Alison was that this was not someone to cross. Margot was growing every day of late, and she was proud to be as tall as a good few short women now, but the mistress of Gallowhill towered over her. Her smile was kind though, and Margot returned it.


"My lady, I am honoured," the young girl said when the woman took her hands into hers. They were large hands.

(I meant white and blue dress, sorry.)

"We are all very glad to have you here. It is always good to be with family.", said the women, her voice seemed cold but her words did have a certain degree of warmth. "Meet the children...", she added and waved two youngsters closer. One was nine and the other six.

The six year old girl with the same reddish hair as her mother smiled shyly and said "I'm Bethany. You'll share my bedchamber."


Margot blinked. "I would prefer to have my own bedchamber." She had been looking forward to that prospect. Bethany seemed sweet, but she didn't want to share a room with her little cousin as though she were a child. Gallowhill might not be the largest of castles, but surely there were available chambers.

"Oh, come on, you´ll hardly notice my sister. I am Garth by the way. Nice to met ya.", a lad of nine year olds with bushy black hair said. He seemed somewhat wise beyond his years by the way he carried himself, a large, laid back smile on his face. "Oh, if it is inconvenient I am sure we can provide something different.", the matriarch of the house said, somewhat embarrased. She hadn´t thought the child coming to their castle would insist on her own room.

Margot thought about it. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad. . . She looked at Bethany’s disappointed little face, and said "I’d be glad to share with my cousin." The small girl brightened. "I’m pleased to meet you Garth."

Everyone seemed content that Margot agreed to sleep in Bethanys room. "Come inside, lass. You must be hungry. We prepared a small meal for you. I hope you like it.", Raymun said. His kids obediently followed the lord into the castle. The rooms inside were narrow but cozy. Soon they reached a small hall, the hearth spread comfortable warmth. "Here you go, eat your fill!", the father of the family said. On the table were meat pies flavored with regional spices and small honeycakes with walnut crust, as well as some fish. In addition a little bit of mead was provided, just enough to quench the thirst and not too much for a child.
