He was a legend, a golden haired young man with model good looks and an attitude that told the world he didn’t care what it thought of him. His name was Meredith, inherited from English grandparents so the rumors go, but most called him Soda. Not much else was known, around the school, about him. At present the 15 year old was listening to music sitting on a table outside in the beautiful Autumn sun. There was a chill in the air and of course the slender young man was not wearing a coat.

The attractive boy smiled at his best friend while pulling his headphones off. “What brings a nice girl like you out this way?” he asked conversationally. He had known the girl sitting next to him what seemed like all his life and was always happy to play the game with her.

“Of course you have, I’m hard to miss.” he replied ignoring the stares of the other students. Standing off of the table the 6 foot tall (with shoes) Soda took Sam’s hand and began slowly walking out of the table area. “What have I been up to?” he repeated faking thought, “things and stuff... nothing out of the ordinary.” quickly he looked away from Sam because that was a lie and she seem to be able to read his eyes when no one else, not even his parent’s when he was at home, could distinguish truth from lie. “How about you? What has your attention these days?”

Quickly the, almost always, carefree blond turned on Sam. Slapping her face only hard enough for her to know he was annoyed, “Don’t be stupid, you’re not stupid!” was all he said before walking away with a quick stride. Having decided he had enough of school for the day the beautiful young man readjusted his head phones over his ears and turned the music up, then simply walked off the school grounds.

Walking by in time to see Soda slap Sam a blond ‘clique’ girl, who happened to be one of the many to have a crush on the mysterious boy, named Ashley laughed at the dark haired girl’s humiliation. “What did you do? Ask him out on a date? Like he would go out with some one like you!” she called, after which her group of blond friends laughed and added their own insults.

Ashley ignored Sam when she saw that Soda was withing running distance. Ashley’s crew dispersed with their evil laughter and mockery when their leader ran off to catch up with her crush. Making good time in her tight ‘skinny’ jeans she caught Soda’s arm making him flinch and tear his head phones off . Linking her arm with his Ashley looked back at Sam, getting further away, “Are you going back to your apartment?” she asked loud enough for the dark haired girl to hear her flirting.

“No.” was Soda’s simple response as he freed himself from the ‘popular’ girl’s grip. “You should go back to school.” he said with still less passion as he quickened his pace toward the public bus’s stop.

“But, I could keep you company.” she half shouted behind him to which he responded, “I don’t want your company!” then pulling his head phones on one last time he boarded the city bus and vanished.

Returning to the school yard Ashley gave Sam an ugly look as she passed her.
