Spock felt like this was getting out of control and it was Jim who was to blame, not the children. Why did Pike think Jim would make a suitable parent? If this was a test, was it not unfair to have young vulnerable children in the balance? Before Jim could yell and frighten the little ones again, he stepped in, calmly as ever. "Jim, step outside, and take a deep breath." he ordered.
"FINE!!" Jim growled heading out and breathing deep, he needed to calm down quickly. He thought back to Bones' crying and that actually made his heart sink...
Spock then bent down to both children's levels and looked them in the eyes. "Children, I am not going to defend Jim, his actions were wrong and he should not have yelled. However, it is naughty to stomp on someone's foot, and pushing, and shoving is also not permitted." his tone was calm but stern like it should be. "Your friendship is admirable, and you are both very smart children, you must forgive Jim when he will apologize."
Jim listened to what Spock was saying and he sighed, he'd been the biggest kid on the shuttle, he knew he had done wrong. "I..I'm sorry guys...." he said softly, but kept his distance. "I wont yell anymore...."
"Thank you Jim." Spock answered, "But the young ones must be punished."
"Spock you can't! I wont let you!" Jim protested.
