Rachel took a deep breath, as she pushed another paper towards him

"Michelle is...a sweet girl", she said, "Mostly keeps to herself....from the reports I read about her, she seems to keep to herself rather than play with the other children most of the time", she continued. "The people at the home she stayed at until today told me that she could usually be found in her room reading....or playing on her computer... She's very intelligent, that much is certain, but...", she paused, trying to find the right words, "she's not....as advanced socially if you know what I mean, sir?", she continued, and then frowned at herself, holding up a hand to keep him from speaking as she tried again.

"Don't get me wrong. There's nothing at all wrong with her, mentally. But....the recommendation from the home in New York is that she start 7th grade rather than 8th. She is a very smart girl. Smart enough, actually, to start 9th instead of 8th, but her social skills leaves a lot to be desired. Probably comes from the way she lived", Rachel said, and then proceeded to explain to Riley how the girl's mother had left her to pretty much take care of herself, in terms of social development.

"We had a difficult time getting her to understand that even though she didn't want to do something, she had to, because we told her", she said, "It seems that she doesn't really see adults as authorities... But I can't blame her. It makes sense when you haven't really had any kind of adult authority before", Rachel said, and then looked at Riley, "But....she isn't out of control as one might fear a girl like that was. As I said: She's a very kind, very gentle girl....and she's smart bordering on precocious...but at the same time there's a little girl just beneath the facade....who wants and needs attention just like any other child", she finished, before taking a deep breath. "I'm not sure if that made sense, but I'm sure you'll find out soon enough", she said as she took the signed papers and put them back in her briefcase.

Michelle stood on the other side of the door and had heard every word. She didn't know what to feel about it. She didn't mind being described as kind and gentle..she tried to treat everybody right. And though she didn't know what "precocious" meant, she sure as heck wasn't a child, or a little girl. And she didn't really NEED adults as "authorities", anyway. She could take care of herself if only she could be left what she needed. And yes, she did prefer the company of books and computer games over that of people sometimes...actually, most times.

She had just started sneaking from the doorway back to her suitcases to pretend to be coming with them just now, when Goldy chose that exact moment to announce his joy at having a new human in the house, and bark happily, drawing the adults' attention to the doorway, Michelle trying to sneak back to her suitcases, unmasking her whole strategy, and revealing that she'd been listening.
