A collective gasp of shock, horror and outrage went through the assembled men at Florence's dismissive mentioning of the King. William, however, raised his hand as he heard the angry pacing towards them coming from behind him.
Having served on the front lines of the Persian border skirmishes had made him quite adept at detecting movement outside of his immediate field of vision.
He knew, as the psychologist would also have known if he hadn't been busy being starstruck, that it was the shock and despair of Florence's situation talking. And he needed to handle it calmly.
"I can understand why you're angry, child", he said in the same kind tone as before. "You have every right to be. You didn't ask for any of this", he gestured to the surroundings, "and to be honest I said from the beginning that the project that ended up bringing you here, was a classic case of those eggheads", he gestured to the lead scientist, "being too busy figuring out IF they could do something, to give any though to whether or not they SHOULD. But", he went on, stressing the word, "you are not colleteral damage. I don't think even they thought that what has happened - you coming here - was one of the possibilities that could happen. Am I right?", he looked up at the scientist with a look on his face that said "Don't test me now".
"You are", came the simple reply, and William looked at her again.
"His Majesty was outraged. I know that he didn't look it. He looked calm, collected, as if this was just another day at the office for him", he went on, "But I've gotten pretty good at reading body language, child", he said with a kind smile. "His Majesty was seething. And you heard him order this project - the science project they've got going on inthere", he gestured behind him to the restricted sections of the facility. "terminated down to the last byte of data", he went on. "Never again will this be tolerated. I know it's too late for you. And I can't promise that you won't have some trouble adjusting", he continued, "But I CAN promise you. I swear to you by all that is good and holy, that I will do my best to give you the best life you can. It's true that we've only just met, but you remind me of my sister", he said, and there was real affection on his face. "And, besides", he said, now a smile on his face that said that he also meant what he'd just said: "I've been given a royal command. Those are NOT to be disobeyed under any circumstances. Now....", he said after a pause "You cannot stay here, child"; he went on kindly again. "Even disregarding the fact that this base's existence is secret, it is cold, clinical, sterile, and not a nice environment at all. We are here because we have to be, to do our jobs. And you deserve better. You will stay with me in my home instead", he said somewhat authoritatively, "where you will have a room of your own, and everything else you need. I will look after you, I promise", he said with a kind smile towards the end.
"Now....may I know your name, darling?"
