Not being able to see through her host and make out whether she was angry, just frustrated, or slightly unamused made Megan more nervous. Of course, she was all ears and compelled to attentively listen to what Laura had to say about the situation. Both receiving a scolding and a slap on the wrist were on the table of possibilities. In the end, she was hoping to exit the building as healthy as she had entered. Unlike a bank, she was directly talking to the individual who made the calls, which could be both good and bad.

Although she hadn’t done much talking, Megan’s throat felt sore. Asking for a warm cup of tea, or just a glass of water was, of course, out of question in a place like this. “You’re doing a splendid job running it, I must say.” The young brunette couldn’t help but squeeze another flattery in the woman’s speech. Other than that, her funder summarised things rather well, that she wouldn’t be getting her money back for a while.

It wasn’t exactly a comforting revelation, but Megan wasn’t quite surprised to know that the loan shark hadn’t given her all the details of her contract during their first meeting. She supposed, this was how these shady people operated, not elaborating on things until it was necessary. “Yeah, sure.” Megan offered a few nods of compliance. Since she doubted the woman was done with her, she didn’t bother to pick her purse back up from the top of the desk.

Her appealing behind stopped occupying a set in the room as Megan sprang to her feet. Like her jeans, she used to fill the chair quite well. It was a moment she would have felt safer if she had worn a bulletproof vest of sorts. “Like this?” Taking a step back, she turned around. Her new orientation displayed the back of her long hair, and something else as well. “You’re not gonna shoot me in the back, are you?” Megan looked back over her shoulder.
