"I suppose I can." The room was delightfully warm, but Lydia's tone was so icy it could have chilled the Pacific Ocean!
"Wurf, wurf, wurf!!" barked the schnauzer at Lydia's feet, quite displeased with Ian's behavior as well! Lydia hushed him, and sat back, running a fingertip over the scrollwork on the brush's handle.
"And one more thing..." she said, suddenly rising and closing the doors. She took a little silver key from her pocket and locked them tight, so they were alone with only themselves, the barky little dog and the fireplace for companionship.
It was going to be a long night. For one of them, anyway...

Ian looked up in surprise, face flushing.
"Now, Lyd, I can't stay so long. I do have to be home for dinner, after all..." Ian stood up as she walked away, willing her to turn around so he could meet her eyes. "But I suppose that's alright for now- we deserve to have some privacy for this-"
His eyes widened. She was... she was holding something in her other hand. Was that... a hairbrush?
"-ah... Huh. Lyd?" The boy gestured to the brush and tilted his head. "What's the deal, then? Did you forget to put it down before you came downstairs?"

"Of course I didn't forget, darling, now tell me. It's Friday night, anyway, and I do think it would behoove you to stay with me..." There was an odd little glint in Lydia's eye, and she smiled prettily, smoothing out her skirts again and sitting down rather close to Ian.
"If you're worried, you can always call your folks and let them know you have...more pressing engagements..." She dug a little rut in the carpet with the toe of one high heel, and gazed into Ian's eyes. "Tell them you're out with Sally, or whoever she is..."

Being presented with the issue, Ian charged it head-on, like a bull. Stubborn and shortsighted, and completely unaware of the bright sword waiting behind Lydia's flashy distraction.
"Now Lyd... It - it isn't like that!" the boy turned towards her slightly, sitting down knee-to-knee, now, and looked at her eyes... those beautiful eyes of hers.
"Since... since we met... I - I've changed, Lyd. I can't stop thinking about you. I don't have an explanation for it, but I just can't get you out of my head. I use words you've used in conversation... I don't see my men as much anymore... I'm changing, and it just can't be right, Lydia... I simply do not understand it... I know who I am, Lyd! I'm Ian Mackanroe, and being with you... it - it isn't who I've been b'fore! I couldn't give a flying flip about Sally, but I just wanted a way to get you to.... to be used to having distance between us. I feel - I - I didn'a want to see you crying... I just wanted to make this easier on you. Honest and true, Lyd."
He looked at her with a frown, unsure of how she'd react. Probably, now, here would come those girlish tears that'd threaten to melt his heart.

"Mmph. You're accusing me of changing you? I know who you are--known you since sixth grade, even, and goodness knows I try to give you your space, but MY HEAVENS, you could have chosen a better way to let me know than this! All these late nights sitting by the telephone and worrying about Sally dragging you off on your honeymoon are gonna do me in..." Lydia was almost laughing now, but tears were starting to cloud up her eyes a bit. No...no. I have to do something before I start crying all over the place!
"And that's exactly why I called you in tonight. It'll be a wonderful little opportunity for me to air my grievances--and settle them (goodness knows I will settle them) as well..."

Ian felt a glimmer of something rather like hope when Lydia started to smile-- and concern etched itself back onto his face when he saw the glitter of tears. He nodded, and leaned back on the couch, giving them some space.
"...alright then, Lyd. Go on. Air and settle to your heart's content - I'm all ears for you. Its best if we work this out, and have a good, clean slate for when this is all over. We're always going to be friends, after all!"
Yes, genius could come to Ian at times. With such a pleased, broad statement, he thought, he had saved their relationship forever! Ian, arbitrator and diplomat extrordinaire!

Suddenly, Lydia's telephone rang again. She held up a finger and crossed the room quickly, leaving the brush on the couch. "May I ask who is calling? OH! Father, it's so marvelous to hear from you right now!" She grinned, but covered it with her hand.
"Mm...what am I doing right now? Well, I put the roast on for you and Georgie, and Ian's at home with me...we were just discussing our...stressed relationship. You didn't know? Daddy, dear, he's been cheating! Yes, yes...a fine mess if you ask me! What's that, you say? A good spanking...yes, Father, I already have the brush here, and call Georgie if you would--tell him to stay out for about another hour or it'll be his bottom being smacked! Thank you, dearie! Je t'aime and please do tell Georgie I love him!" Click.
There it was. Lydia had just 'ruined' Ian's evening--completely, flawlessly and in one fell swoop, talking to her father...this would be quite amusing!

Ian's mouth opened and closed a couple of times.
"Hu-"
"B-what?"
"S...sp...span..."
"Kuh-jo- ....w-what?"
No intelligent words came out. Flushing bright red, Ian looked with horror at Lydia. A cold sweat rolled down his neck. Her... a ... spanking? She... but... he..... but...
"W-wait!"
He held up his hands defensively when the girl started to approach again.
"I-- I..." His brain slowed down for a moment. "I.... need to call home?"
What? Okay. Sure. Maybe he could pretend his mother needed him back home, or something! Great. Yeah, he'd call home. And then run away. Because Lydia was going crazy!

Lydia turned toward him, hands on hips. "Not now, you don't, darling. I can tell you one thing--I've not lost my marbles. Not yet, anyway...which is a wonder after what you put me through." She was smiling again, and her eyes glinted prettily in the dim light of the floor lamps.
"And for now, you're not going anywhere." She crossed the room briskly, sat down once more. "Stand up and take that coat off, mister. You're in for one of the longest evenings of your young life, and you're not getting out of it."

"Lydia.... c-come on, now... This is just silly, Lyd. Let's... let's talk about this, alright?"
Ian was suddenly far-too aware of the fireplace, and the heat coming out of it. Now, he did feel warm. He almost wanted to take off his coat just to keep from breaking out into a sweat. In fact...
As though doing so wasn't a precursor to his girlfriend's rage, Ian did as she'd asked, removing the coat and folding it onto his lap. But he didn't move otherwise, holding it somewhat protectively.
"There. Come on, let's just have a normal discussion about this Lyd. You're acting rather wildly..." He extended his left hand, and placed it on her right shoulder, which was right next to him. "I am sorry, Lyd. We can get through this, can't we?"
