In a tribe of warriors one of the strongest generals, a woman named Ema agrees to choose a child to train as a warrior's apprentice, (something like a knights square.) The child she ends up with is an orphan and quite playful though generally obedient and hard working.
As the aloof warrior and the child spend time together Ema begins to let her ward see an less strict and actually playful side to her, though she is still very firm whenever the chld endangers themselves or worries her too badly.
