If you're trying RPG Maker, I highly recommend Godspeak's tutorial series. You'll find them further back on this forum. They'll teach you the basics of what you need to know in a few hours. From there you can start creating! There are plenty of available Twine guides out there.
Personally I enjoy both for different reasons. In Twine, I can create an image in my mind that's exactly to my liking. Also, the writing tends to be a lot better in Twine games. Prose before... well. RPG Maker is better at exploring, music/sounds and it feels more like a traditional game.
The main thing I've found is make something managable in length and complexity that you would have liked to play. Good luck!
