A Toast to Flappers and New-Fangled Ideas

Molly nodded softly against her pillow. "I... I know..." But she could not tell her governess this. Not at all...

"Alright..." She sighed when Marilyn would talk no further. "I'll go get you a cup of nice warm tea." She kissed her hair softly and went downstairs. After preparing some chamomile tea, she saw Lawrence on her way to the staircase. "Mr. Lawrence...do you have any idea why Marilyn is so upset? She won't tell me a word..."

Marilyn didn't say anything as her governess left, but merely continued to cry her misery into her pillow.

Mr. Lawrence shrugged. "I have no idea, Miss Lottie. Sadie told me she informed Marilyn of her new boyfriend, and that she would be visiting less because of him..."

[Nerine]

"Ah...I see...Thank you, Mr. Lawrence..." Lottie went upstairs, knocked once, and entered, setting the tea on Marilyn's nightstand. "Here you are sweetie...You know, Mr. Lawrence told me what happened...I know it's hard, seeing your friends move on when they have boyfriends, but she'll still come back. You're a beautiful young lady, and you'll find a sweet boy of your own too, someday."

Marilyn didn't move from her place on her bed, nor did she look at the door when Miss Lottie entered. However, when her governess spoke, she started crying all over again (and right after she had thought that all her tears were spent). "I-I don't want a boy! I w-want S-Sadie back!"

Lottie of course didn't fully get her meaning, but sighed and rubbed her back as she began to cry anew. "Shh now...Sadie will see you. If I have to nag her myself, she will. Please, Marilyn, dry your tears and sip on this tea while it's still hot..."

Marilyn stubbornly shook her head against her pillow. Tea would not soothe her, and neither would Miss Lottie's kind words, though they usually could. Her heart was broken, and Sadie had been the one to do it...

[Nerine]

This whole thing broke Lottie's heart, even though she didn't know what was truly going on. "Well, I'm sorry that you're feeling this way...I'll leave the tea here for you, and I'll be in my room if you need me, alright dearest? You may talk to me about anything, if you truly need..." She leaned down and kissed Marilyn's hair, then left.

Marilyn nodded a little at Miss Lottie's speech, and she sniffled a little after she heard the door shut, before hugging her pillow tighter and crying until she fell asleep, even though it was only just after lunch.

Lottie told Mr. Lawrence of Marilyn's state, terribly worried for her.

Meanwhile, Sadie was crying as well back in her dorm room. Luckily everyone was out, so he was able to cry by herself. She felt terrible for what she did to Marilyn...but after awhile, she dried her tears. James would be back soon...
