His stomach rumbled, and he realized with a star birthed of them had eaten in nearly 5 days. He went back inside and shook Esmeralda. "Hey, wake up. We need to find some food."

Bricet took the moment to admire his handiwork. Her bottom was still bright red, and looked very painful. "Relax, you're not doing anything hard. I want you to search around the camp for any flint rocks. STAY CLOSE, or I'll go find myself a cane." After all his years as cabin boy, he was enjoying his newfound dominance.

The girl moaned and slowly got up. She tried to look for the stones and remain close. The cane would kill her at this point.

With Esmeralda gathering rocks, Bricet began to explore their immediate surroundings. The jungle was dense, but the ocean was less than a quarter mile away. A nice bay was contained on three sides by sandbars. It would make a great fishing spot.
He began walking back, and he remembered something he had learned on a trip to India. He found himself a thicket of bamboo, and carried back as much as he could to camp.

Esmeralda was still looking for rocks as Bricet came back to the camp. As she saw the bamboo sticks her eyes widened. "Oh no! Don´t beat me again, I´ve done what you told me to do!!", she protested in panick.

"What? What are you..." Bricet realized what he was carrying in his arms, and laughed. "No, it's not what you think. Look here." He took the soft end of one of the stalks and broke it open, biting into the soft flesh beneath. "It doesn't taste very good, but it's something to chew."

"What?", Esmeralda asked confused and watched him chew on the soft flesh inside the stalks. "May I try one myself?", she asked.

"Sure." He handed her one of the stalks for her to chew. "This'll do for now, but we're gonna have to find better food. I think I'll try fishing in the lagoon tomorrow."
