Pike looked up as both Jim and Spock entered the room, and he was reading Jim's Captain's log, going over the lying words. "Uneventful." he spoke after a short while and leaned back in his chair, eyes on Jim before he then glanced to Mister Spock. The Vulcan knew why the two of them were called there. Pike looked to Jim and rose a brow. "That's how you described it in your Captain's log. So, tell me more about this Volcano, it was highly volatile, right?" he asked, just waiting for Jim to slip up...maybe the young man would come out with the truth, but he doubted it.

Jim didn't know what this summons was about but he wasn't concerned, at least not until Admiral Pike started to speak and asked about the volcano, saying that it was highly volatile. "Well...maybe our initial assessments of that were a bit off," Jim said, playing it off as though it were no big deal, the young man shrugging his shoulders before he added, "I didn't think it was important enough to add in the log."
Spock looked over at the captain as he heard what he was saying and it was immediately apparent to him that the captain had been less than truthful in the mission log that he had submitted. Which meant that his report had pretty much contradicted what the other man had written, the Vulcan not having realized that of course until it was too late.

Pike frowned a little, "Not important, because Mr. Spock detonated a cold fusion device inside it, right after a civilization that's barely invented the wheel, happened to see a star ship rising out of their ocean!" It was clear from Admiral Pike's expression, that the man was far from happy, but mainly because Jim had lied on an official report, and to himself. "That is pretty much how you described it, is it not?" he asked, looking to Spock this time.

Jim's eyes got a bit wider than normal when he heard what Admiral Pike had to say and he immediately looked at Spock. "You submitted a report? Why'd you do that?" he asked, not bothering to keep his voice down as he said it. Spock looked at him and said, "I did not realize that you had lied in your captain's log or I would have spoken to you about it before I submitted it." That didn't really go over too well with Jim and he said, "Yea well I didn't know you were going to throw me under the bus like that after I saved your life!" Spock opened his mouth to say something but honestly he was for once at a loss as to how to reply to that one, or to be more precise he was conflicted so he just decided that saying nothing was the most logical course of action that he could take.

"Gentlemen." Pike said, standing up from his seat to break up the argument between Spock and Jim, since he didn't want a fight to escalate. "Your mission was to observe, not to interfere." he informed before then looking to Spock, "Thank you for the report Mr. Spock, you're dismissed Commander." he said, and watched Spock leave the room. Pike then turned to Jim and sighed, "You have any idea what a pain in the ass you are?"

Jim looked over at Pike when the man got their attention and he frowned upon being reminded of just what their mission had been, the man shaking his head as he said, "Well we had to do something or that entire race would have died. So who cares if they saw the ship? We had to do that so the Vulcan over there wouldn't die." He watched as Spock turned and left the room, thinking that he was being abandoned but he didn't say that out loud and instead just turned his attention back ot Pike when he was asked if he knew what a pain in the ass he was. "I have an idea," he replied.

Pike sighed, he could tell Jim didn't understand the severity of the situation and that annoyed him, since it was mandatory that all Captain's logs were truthful, no matter what they entail. "So tell me what you did wrong James, what's the lesson to be learned here?" he asked, eyeing the young man and hoping to the heavens above that he returned a sensible answer. Something that would make Pike believe he was capable of staying Captain.

Jim was sort of used to being lectured by Pike since that had been how they'd met, after the man intervened in a bar fight that had gotten out of hand but that the young captain still deemed a good fight, so he wasn't too bothered by this. When Pike asked him what the lesson was Jim looked at him and without a moment's hesitation replied, 'Never trust a Vulcan." That was the lesson that he had gotten out of all of this since he still maintained that it never would have been an issue if Spock hadn't submitted that report. As always he didn't accept responsibility for his own part in the incident since as far as he was concerned he hadn't done anything that was wrong.

Pike forced back a growl of irritation upon hearing Jim's answer. But he couldn't hold back on scolding the young man. The boy - yes boy - needed more than a good scolding, and a few more disciplinary thoughts crossed the man's mind. "Now see you can't even answer the question. You lied, on an official report, you lied!" he started making his way toward Jim, hoping to get through to the young man, "You think the rules don't apply to you because you disagree with them."

Jim looked at Pike and he could tell that the man was irritated but that seemed to happen a lot when it concerned him, with a lot of different people, so he pretty much just let it bounce off him. The bit about lying caused him to flinch but he stood by his decision and he wasn't going to feel bad about it regardless of what the rules said. "Sometimes rules were just meant to be broken...this was one of those times. And it wouldn't have been a big issue if the Vulcan had just kept his mouth shut...well, you know what I mean," Jim said since Spock hadn't actually said anything but the principle was the same.
