This is a surprise, no?
I remember, back at Anime Brts, that there were a couple of members, around 40 or so...then it died, of course. Then came the forums FlairBlack made and it was basically public until he decided, due to members suggestions, that the forum should only be available of access to registered members. Now, there is this whole new website, which is much better than anything this community had before, but I'm actually surprised at the amount of members. There are so many! Though, of course, only a minority actually come out from under their "hiding rock" and introduce themselves. The others are all lurkers. Amazing!

I agree. it took a huge amount of courage for me too send in my first fic (that and a password protected computer) and then sign up for the forums at ASA. Give them time and the lurkers will come out of hiding.
Take your time, its well worth it.

I understand your point perfectly, not everyone has guts enough to admit something like this. However, I believe it was established a while ago, in one form or another, that this aspect of our lives does not make us freaks. As far as I know, this community respects eachother and nobody will point and laugh at another person here because they are into spanking. They can keep the reason personnal, and they can remain lurkers until they gather up the courage to speak up, but they shouldn't remain lurkers simply because they are afraid of being considered freaks by any of the members on this forum.
Oh, and sorry about the font size and colour. I'm used to using this combination. Furthermore, I personally think it matches well with the background colour o_o.

To my knowlege AnimeBrts had well over 1000 members (I can't remember, it's on the Wikia article) and around 200 individual logins a day, far more than 40...
As for lurkers, I think it's apathy, I know a vast number of people I know over the internet and my real life friends really just can't be ARSED to register themselves if they don't have to.
Apathy counts for a heck of a lot in this world, this isn't negative thinking I think its true. When ASA went private people registered and they still didn't post - I don't think this has ANYTHING to do with fear whatsoever for most of them.
Oh, and that red text and the purple on message headers is really giving me a headache ;;; I mean it - my eyes are watering... can't people just stick to basic and not have ones so bright? I'm a colourful person myself but this background makes even the most simple and comfortable colour bright.
I find myself having to highlight this text in order to read it.

I also think its pretty pointless to force someone to register. The only thing you get will be a lot of 0 post members. The only good thing I can think of is that you can advertise your site with a larger number of members. I don't really think that is necessary though. You can simple look on the sites traffic and such.
And as for the red: The color is not that bad, but the font size needs to be bigger. Then it would be easier on the eyes of those with a large screen resolution.

Just to make myself clear, I do not endorse force registering in any way. I just think it's weird for people who actually register, even if they didn't have to, to not post or anything. It's all up to them anyway but it's still, well, albit awkward.
And, about all the fonts remarks, I apologise o_o. It's just that on my computer screen, I could read the small letters perfectly and the red fits well with the grey/black background, and that is, just as Zero said, because of screen resolution.

l think as a member one should give credit where credit is due, for example you visit a section in the gallery where an artists has uploaded his images and if you like them tell him/her that.. appreciation costs nothing imho, however in all honesty l myself am here not to appreciate but more to make sure the script runs smoothly while AI's at work.

Another major reason for people to lurk is they do not feall they have anything to contribute.
While the might enjoy the work, they don't want to be just a "me too". and to be fair we do have some high qualty artists and writers, who claiber can make new people intmated to pressent their own pieces.

Animebrts had a few thousands of members by the time it went down. (4000 and something, IIRC) with 80 or so users online at the same time during peak hours (again, IIRC). Of course, only a small part of these actually contributed.
One point you may want to consider is that by requesting registration before people can see the naughty parts (and only allowing people over 18) is that you avoid some legal problems regarding minors.
