Witness protection :: Cleverfox
It was just an ordinary night really, middle of February, a little nippy outside but nothing to really complain about. Two men walked along down into the sub way, one of them stopped and seemed to freak out a bit, though he didn't make much noise. The sub way was practically empty and it so happened that the two men witnessed a murder that night, the damage was done, the person couldn't be helped. They were spotted and they had to high tail it.
After reporting it to the police, the two men were put under witness protection with their best profilers Agent Hotch and Agent Burke. The slightly shorter man with wavy black hair, brown eyes and glasses was named Mark, and he went to live with Aaron Hotch. The skinner, smart, shy kid went to live with Peter Burke.
They'd settled in well for now.
*****
Mark didn't much like being a part of the witness protection program, he wasn't allowed a laptop or anything that could be traced, and that meant he couldn't upload or make videos, which was practically his life, he just wasn't happy and as the days went by, his attitude got worse. Now he did like Hotch, even if he was a bit intimidating, but somehow he plucked up the courage to give him a serious attitude that following day.
He slammed his weight around, banging down glasses and slamming doors and making a scene basically. He found Hotch in the kitchen and frowned, "Make me something to eat, I'm hungry." he told him straight up.
********
Peter had missed having someone to look after ever since Neal went to Cape Verde to hide out from D.C. He was soon promoted to another firm and given a new title, witness protection. He was put in charge of protecting young Spencer Reid, who was a really great kid, and pretty easy to keep watch over, even if he didn't like being cooped up. Peter knew this was tough on him, but his priority was keeping the man safe.
"Morning Spencer, did you sleep well?" he asked curiously, putting his newspaper down, "I made you some breakfast, it's in the microwave, hope you like scrambled eggs on toast." he grinned.

If anyone had asked Supervisory Special Agent Aaron Hotchner what he was going to be doing he would not have answered that he was going to be babysitting a young man that had witnessed a murder. However that was exactly what he found himself doing and while he knew that it was necessary the attitude that he was getting over it from the young man in question really just didn't sit too well with him honestly.
Especially not when he started to make a scene like a toddler.
When the young man demanded that he make him something to eat Hotch looked at him and said calmly, "Getting that attitude with me is no way to get what you want young man." Given the number of years that he'd been a team leader Hotch just had a voice that screamed out authority even when he wasn't trying but right now, boy was he trying and boy was he intimidating.
*****
Having an IQ of 189 and an eidetic memory was something that had always helped Dr. Spencer Reid in life, the young man having already attained two doctorate degrees as well as a handful of bachelors' degrees as well. Not that any of this had helped to make him friends, he'd been ostracized most of his life because he was so much smarter than everyone else and he had never really learned to interact with people. Which made the fact that he was put in witness protection all that much harder for him.
Reid looked at Peter as the man bid him good morning and asked if he had slept well but he just sort of shrugged. "I guess," he lied, never having really slept well because of nightmares. When the man went on to say that he had made him breakfast Reid was surprised but he actually did offer up the ghost of a smile as he said, "Thanks, that sounds good."

Mark hadn't really had to deal with much male authority, his Dad died of cancer when he was younger and since then Mark wasn't aspired to do anything. But making videos made him happy and so that's what he did, and he earned decent money off of it too. He glared at Hotch when he called him young man and gave him that stern tone, telling him that getting an attitude with him wasn't the way to get what he wanted.
"I'm NOT giving you attitude!" he snapped back. Mark did have an anger problem, usually when he was frustrated, and it could get a bit violent, he smashed his game controller once because a game infuriated him that much. His anger was showing through and he stomped around like a toddler Hulk or something.
"Just MAKE it and stop being so damn lazy!" he snapped at him, "Can I just use your laptop for five minutes Hotch?! Please?!" he begged.
****
In a lot of ways, Spencer was like Neal, they were both smart and young and had a childish look about them. Peter missed being around that, so being around Spencer was really good for his current mood, and he knew how important it was that he protect him, no matter what. He'd be treated like a family member for as long as needed, Peter wasn't out to make him feel like a burden or something, just a guest in his home who should make himself welcome. He smiled and asked if Spencer had slept well.
"That's good, if you need sleeping pills, I have some you can take." he answered and then nodded his head, "You're welcome, it wasn't any trouble so don't worry about that. Now...I gotta take you to work with me...can I trust you to stay in my sight and not wander off, Spencer?" he asked, raising a brow.

Hotch only vaguely knew Mark's history since the young man hadn't been staying with him for very long but since he was a profiler he had already started to pick apart the young man's personality. It wasn't something that he was doing consciously but instead was just a side effect of having been a profiler for so long. He could already tell that Mark had issues with his anger but that didn't mean that he was going to just take the attitude that he was being given.
Because the young man was throwing a tantrum, there were no ifs, ands or buts about it.
"Okay that is enough," Hotch said when Mark snapped at him to make him something to eat and stop being lazy. The fact that he immediately turned around and begged to use his laptop really just didn't help all that much. "No you may not use my laptop. What you can do is calm down right now," Hotch told him, his narrowed eyes focused on the man that he was guarding.
*****
Reid really was awkward and socially inept, withdrawn almost, but he could open up to people after he'd been around them for awhile. He answered the question about how well he had slept and shook his head when the man mentioned sleeping pills. "That isn't necessary and it's a statistical fact that those types of drugs are almost always addicting and do nothing to aid the actual sleep cycle. They make you sleep but once you stop taking them then the insomnia returns," Reid said, the whole statistics thing being something that was pretty common for the young man, he could spit out facts at the drop of a hat.
The mention of going to work with Peter caused Reid to look at the man, arching a brow when he was asked if he could stay in sight. "You are aware that I'm an FBI agent as well, are you not?" he asked though he kept his tone low.

Mark wasn't usually like that, usually he was happy, warm, loveable and peppy, like a little puppy who loved making people laugh and smile. But some things triggered the worst of his moods, like not being able to access part of his life, that sucked balls as far as Mark was concerned, and he was taking it out on Hotch. He snapped at him to get him something to eat and rolled his brown eyes behind his glasses when told that what he said was enough.
And then went on to tell him he couldn't use the laptop and had to calm down. "WHAT THE HELL! I wanna use it damn it!" he snapped, reaching for it but accidentally knocking it off of the table and onto the floor, a hinge piece broke off and the screen was hanging on by just one hinge.
Yikes. Mark didn't mean to do that.
*****
Peter looked at Spencer when he explained about the sleeping pills, and he just blinked. "Uh...okay..." he answered, not about to argue with someone who's IQ was through the roof so he just nodded, since it wasn't a subject he was well clued up on. Peter was smart, but it was more street smarts than book smarts. He rose a brow when Reid told him that he was an FBI agent. "I know you are, but you know the rules, you have to stay in mine, Fowler's, Keller's or Hotch's sight through this witness protection program."
"I can't side step around that son, I'm not gonna risk your safety." he told him, "So can I trust you to do that, Spencer?"

There was really no way that Hotch was going to just let the young man get away with yelling at him and he was really not happy when Mark reached for the laptop only to send it crashing to the floor where it ended up breaking.
He turned a steely eyed gaze on the young man at that point.
"Alright fine, if you really want to act like a toddler then I'm going to treat you like one," Hotch told him, his tone stern but he was still calm and his voice was level. After saying that he reached out and took the young man by the wrist and then leading him toward the couch.
*****
Reid looked at Peter when the man confirmed that he knew he was an FBI agent as well but then went on to say that he still had to stay within the sight of the four agents that were working on this case. Hotch he was familiar with because the man was their team leader in the Behavioral Analysis Unit, or BAU, but the others he wasn't really familiar with. All the same he didn't think it was necessary so he sort of sighed.
"Do you honestly think that someone is going to get to me at the FBI headquarters? Surrounded by federal agents?" he questioned.

Mark really hadn't meant to break the laptop, and he looked at Hotch with something of a half shocked half remorseful expression when it happened. "I-I...didn't mean to..." he told him and frowned a bit when he said he was going to treat him like a toddler, "W-What're you gonna do? I don't want any..." he told him as Hotch lead him toward the couch, Mark having no idea what was about to happen.
But that was probably for the best. "I didn't mean to break your damn laptop." he mumbled unhappily. "Let me go Hotch."
******
Peter kept his gaze on Spencer and rose a brow when he asked if he really thought someone would try getting him somewhere surrounded by FBI agents. "Yep." he answered simply, "I'm not taking any chances, I take this seriously, I swore to protect you and that's what I'm going to do, even if it kills me," he explained, which he knew could be a possibility after reading the contract he had to sign. He then got up and grabbed his jacket. "I might have to leave you with Agent Keller for a while if I need to go in any meetings, but don't worry, he's an okay kind of guy, just a bit snippy..."
He smiled and put a hand on his shoulder, "We don't have to go, if you don't feel comfortable, we can stay here if you want, Spencer?"

While he was angry for the fact that it had happened Hotch did still know that Mark hadn't actually meant to break the laptop during his little tantrum. Not that this made it the least bit okay as far as the man was concerned. So he told him that he was going to treat him like the toddler he was acting like, the man taking his charge by the wrist and leading him to the couch. He looked at Mark when the young man asked him what he was going to do, Hotch gazing back at him calmly as he sat down on the couch.
"I'm going to give you a spanking," he told the younger man bluntly, having decided that it was in his best interest to just get that out there right away.
*****
Reid looked to Peter when the older agent told him that he wasn't going to take any chances, the young man surprised to hear that. "I really think that is a minimal risk considering the security measures that are in place," Reid said as he continued to gaze at the man. When Peter placed a hand on his shoulder he stiffened a bit since he wasn't used to the physical contact but he didn't try to pull away.
"No I want to go to work...just not sure that I want to be watched like a child," Reid replied when Peter mentioned that they didn't have to go.

Mark wasn't sure what was going through Hotch's mind, so he asked what this was all about and his eyes widened when the man said he was going to give him a spanking. "Pardon?" he asked, "You wanna run that by me again?" which was what he usually said when he didn't like what he was hearing. "You can't spank me, I'm a grown man!" he snapped, narrowing his eyes at his Handler and shaking his head unhappily.
"Screw that!" There was no way Mark was going to just let himself be spanked, no damn freakin way! But he was starting to get the feeling that he didn't have a choice.
******
Peter shook his head, "You'd be surprised how lax some of them can be and how smart criminals can be." he told Reid with a sigh and a shake of his head. "If they can obtain one of our ID cards and forge it, then no one's the wiser." he told him and then nodded when Spencer confirmed that he wanted to go to work but didn't want to be watched like a child. "Sorry buddy, but that's the rules, you're just gonna have to cowboy up about it." he told him and grabbed his shoes, sliding them onto his feet.
"C'mon, we'll take my car." he said, leading Spencer out and to his car.

Hotch wasn't going to beat around the bush so when Mark asked him what he was going to do the agent bluntly responded that he was going to give him a spanking. It wasn't something that he was expecting to go over well with the younger man but he really just didn't care.
"If you were too old then you should have acted your age," Hotch said when he heard the protests that the younger man was giving. "But that's not what you did, instead you had a tantrum and broke something that didn't belong to you," Hotch told him, his tone still stern.
*****
Reid sort of sighed when he heard what Peter was saying and while he wanted to further argue his point he did realize that the man had a valid point. "I'm not sure they're actually capable of doing that," was really the only thing that he could offer up in response to the man's words. He once again sighed when Peter said that being watched was part of the rules, of course it was a part that he wasn't overly fond of.
"Right," Reid said when Peter told him to come and said that they would take his car.
