It was winter in the realm of Midgard and a small village near the border to the lands of the Trolls and Giants lived in fear of a dangerous beast that attacked the cattle owned by the villagers at night. After this had gone on for several weeks a few brave men gathered to search for the beast hiding place lead by an experienced worrior named Toki who had once been a famous raider and fought in many battles. After searching every forest and cave sourrounding the village they finally came across a small cave sourrounded with traces of animal bone and dryed blood. This must be it, they thought, but every man except Toki feared what they might find inside and hesitated. The beast they had hunted was probably a Varg, or shapeshifter. A bestial man that could transform into a very large Wolf and kill an entire group of warriors. But when some kind of noise could be heard inside the cave one of them was brave enough to approach the dark hole in the stone. While the others raised their spears and shield to attack once the beast would charge them he saw nothing but a young, frightened looking boy. He had to be about 14 years old, but looked rather small for his age, espacially in comparison to the large men around him. He was entirely naked but didn´t seem to be cold even though snow had already fallen. His white blonde hair made him look rather handsome alltough it was unkempt and needed to be cut a little. The strangest thing about him, though where his yellow eyes, which seemd somehow not entirely human, that alongside the blood that could be seen on his pale skin made him look rather unsettling.
"Please don´t kill me...", the child whispered, sounding rather pitiful. Was he a beast or one of its victims ?

Toki's eyes the naked boy warily, his concern currently on the safety of himself and the men who have chosen to follow him on this day. As he watches the boy, however, he sees nothing that would suggest that they're in immediate danger, though the boy's condition suggests that he is more than a simple victim. It's unlikely that the shapeshifter would leave such a morsel for a later meal. Still, he hardly seems like he could be the ravenous monster that he had expected. He looks back over his shoulder, holding up a hand to the group of armed men.

"Hold back. Do not approach unless I say for you to, or until you are certain of my death."

The men seem quite happy to let Toki take the lead, staying well away from the cave entrance as he disappears inside. He approaches the boy cautiously, but with open and empty hands to show him that his weapons are still sheathed.

"Who kills who, boy, is still a matter of discussion... What is your name, and how did you come to be here?"

Hrolf calmes a bit down when he sees how Toki approaches him without carrying a weapon in his hand. That seemed to be a good sign, however he was certain that the situation might change very quickly if the man suspected that his life was in danger.
The boy took a few, slow steps towards Toki so he was no longer partially hidden by the shadow and also so that Toki could clearly see that his body language did not suggest that he had the itention to attack. After that the boy started to answer Tokis questions.

"My name is Hrolf, I came here because I was exiled from my village and now have no other place to go except the wilderness. But then I was suprised by the heavy snow. As I was searching for a hiding place I became weaker and weaker until I had to eat. For that I am very sorry. If you want you can pick a punishment for me before I leave..."

With that the boy turned around a little so that Toki could see a few small scars that were easy to miss from the distance. They seemed to be healed quite well, allthough they had to come from a couple of quite severe beatings or whippings. The most disturbing injury however was a vertical scar over the boys lip that ended at his chin.

Toki listens quietly to the boy's explanation, realizing that the changes must still be beyond the boy's control. He is merely a victim to his own hunger. While no less disturbing, it does remove most of the stigma that Toki had felt for the shapeshifter when he set out to hunt it down. After all, this is a boy, not a mere animal. That, unfortunately, leaves him with some very serious decisions to make.

"Come with me, boy. We'll take you to my village and the elders will know what to do. If nothing else, I'll handle any punishment personally, but tending to your hunger may be the best way to control the beast inside of you."

He extends a hand to the boy.

"Thank you... I should probably wear some clothes when I face the judgement of your elders. Sadly what I was once wearing was completly destroyed during my transformation.", Hrolf told Toki and took his hand, thinking this gesture was a good sign. After that he awaited to be taken to the village which he had unwillingly terrorized, wondering what fate had in store for him. But one thing seemed certain and that was that he could trust Toki. At least his instincts told him to. This man seemed to be different from other man, more just and compassionate, similar to his own father before he had discovered that his son was cursed and chased him out of his home. But Toki already knew what he was. And this meant that at least for a short time he might no longer be persecuted and treated as an outcast.

Toki leads the boy out of the cave, to a mixture of shock and concern on the faces of the other farmers who he had called out for this hunt. At least some of them immediately know what the boy must be, and are flabbergasted that Toki would bring him out alive like he were escorting a normal boy out of the lion's den. One steps forward boldly, his gaze meeting with Toki's.

"What are you doing? Is this not the monster that terrorized our farms? Why are we not striki..."

The man stops as soon as Toki raises a strong hand, signalling for all to listen to him.

"Regardless of what the boy may have done, he is still just a boy and I will not strike him down blindly. I shall personally take him before the elders to seek their advice on how to proceed. Regardless, rest assured that the nightmare has passed. Go back to your homes and feel at ease. I shall see to it that the boy harms no one or their property."

Hrolf took a few steps backwards and even flinched at the word "strike". He was not a coward, but he had suffered very much at the hands of angry mobs like this one, so he was careful to always stay close to Toki, his only protector. Sure their was still the possibility that the village elders would just sentence him to death or to some kind of cruel punishment, but he was feeling hopeful. This was the first place where he was not treated like a monster by everyone. That had to be a good sign. Surely the Gods were still watching over him. "Can we see the Elders right away ?",asked Hrolf. He didn´t want to wait too long for his audience. After all someone could still try to attack him, regardless whether Toki protected him or not.

There are some exchanged glances, but the other men back away and start to head off, leaving Toki to handle the boy as he had requested. The man sighs, taking the boy's arm and starting to lead him towards the village. For the boy's sake, he hopes that the elders are in a good mood.

"Yes, I think that would be best. Tell me... How long have you been out here on your own? Does no one watch or care for you, boy?"

Hrolf allows Toki to take his arm and follows him as fast as he can. He is not exactly sure why but he feels strangely safe around him. It seemed as if the old man really was on his side. When Hrolf was asked how long he had been on his own he answered," Around three years... I was exiled from my family when I was 11 years old and ever since I have been wandering from one place to the other. Once I stayed with a witch living in a forest not far from here . But after some time a few warriors killed her and I had to flee since I was unable to change into a Wolf at that moment. Maybe I was just too scared..." The boy lowered his head, feeling ashamed that he had been unable to avenge the only person that had ever cared for him after he had been cursed.

Toki nods as they walk along, trying to wrap his head around everything that the boy is telling him. He hopes that he can learn enough about Hrolf's situation to make an argument to the elders to not execute him.

"You are young, still, and the beast hasn't yet taken full claim on your senses. This may be your saving grace, boy, as I can argue to the elder council that you may perhaps be able to learn to control these changes inside of you, rather than letting the beast take you. If nothing else, placing you in a stable home with regular meals to avoid hunger should help to minimize such changes in you."
