For all her excitement, Elesa couldn't stop fussing. She was on a rampage, straightening up everything in her path: making sure the cereal boxes in the pantry were perfectly aligned, giving anything that may have collected dust in the ten minutes since she went over it with the duster a second cleaning, trying in vain to make her little sister's hair stay down for once... everything had to be perfect. Today was the day she and Skyla brought home their two adoptive kids, Hilbert and Hilda. Skyla had gone out to pick them up an hour ago from their foster home in Castelia City. She would be home any minute.

"Sweet, you really need to stop," Skyla was saying as she drew closer and closer to the house. "Don't call your sister names, and don't tell me to fuck off! I don't like fighting with you two on our FIRST day together, but you're about to make me stop this car!"
"Sorry, Miss Skyla. . . Hey, Hil, look! I think I see the car of that same jerk we took revenge on the other day!"
Skyla's shoulders sagged. She liked kids well enough, babies and tots in particular, but she wasn't exactly head-over-heels for the school-aged kids. Elesa had yearned to adopt kids; out of love for her, she'd pretended to share their enthusiasm at the thought of a child, and she intended to do her very best to be a good adoptive mother. But with every minute that passed, she became less certain she was up to the task.

"Oh yeah, the shiny-headed guy. But he's out of spitting range right now. We'll have to get him later." Hilda, the younger twin, jammed her feet into the back of the driver's seat. Last time she'd done that, Skyla had made an interesting noise and said a swear word under her breath. "Are we there yet?"

In silence, Skyla pulled into the driveway. She managed to Don a sunny grin before turning to fsce the twins.
"Welcome home, little ones. Let's go inside and see Elesa."

They barely had to step inside. Elesa was waiting by the door with a huge, dreamy grin. She immediately embraced both twins at the same time, smooching them both, much to their mutual horror. "Welcome home! We're so happy to have you both. Oh, you're even more beautiful than I remember. Are you hungry? I made a big lunch for your arrival."
The twins looked at each other, stomachs growling. "Yeah, I think we're both hungry. But can I ask a question first?"
"Of course, sweetheart. Anything you want."
Hilda turned to regard Skyla with her blankest, most unassuming expression. "Are we there yet? You didn't say."

"Yes, sweet. We are there." Skyla maintained s grin that was as similar to Elesas as she could manage. "Now come on in. You and Hilbert each have your own room, but the rooms are separated by a doorless doorway."
Hilbert didn't budge from his spot, but went on gazing up into Elesas face. His eyes were almost as dreamy as hers. She was stunningly beautiful - and she'd adopted him and hugged and kissed him.

"What, did they run out of doors when they were building the house or something?" Over the past eight years, she'd developed a way of testing people to see how far she could push them. Sometimes they snapped and things got ugly, but it was always good to know someone else's limits, especially when you were going to spend a lot of time with them.
Elesa stepped in to save Skyla. "Wow, I can practically hear your stomachs from here. Let's get that taken care of. Is there anything either of you are allergic to or can't eat?"

"No, sweet, we didn't run out of doors. We thought maybe you and Hilbert would like to have your own space, but still be able to see eachother easily. If you ever want to be alone, you can just pull the curtain shut. Now Elesa made tacos, and they're really good, so come on in and eat up."
As they stuffed their faces, Hilbert scoped Elesa out. She was pretty and angelically nice. But was she someone he could be tight friends with, or was she a wimp-ass? In a whisper, he asked Hilda what she suspected.
