Maybe not an orphan, that has been used quite a lot, but may a runaway to breaks in/takes shelter in a house which belong to a sorcerer who lets him stay providing he makes himself useful and behaves himself.
Another possibility it the boy is the sorcerer's nephew or younger cousin who gets dumped on him by the boys parents either because he is too much of a handful for them or they are moving away and can't or won't take him with them or he is an unwanted stepchild following a remarriage.
It might be that he is taken in by the sorcerer as the sorcerer is considered the best person in the area to provide and education (or the only one who hasn't refused to teach him).
A factor to take into consideration is whether in this setting magic/sorcery is an innate ability or gift that a person does or does not have which can be developed and trained or whether it is a skill that anyone can use with enough study - nature or nurture. If it is the first then the boy might show signs of the ability but can't control it, if it is the second he might secretly read some of the books about and starting trying it for himself with disastrous/hilarious consequences.
A final idea to add to the mix is that ther sorcerer might have more than one students or boys in his charge but only one can be his apprentice.
