Birds chirped and flew overhead as the sun’s light beamed down on a small cottage located in the middle of the woods. The sound of something chopping into the bark of a tree was audible but it would be drowned out by the various other noises of the wilderness. The sound was currently being made by a rather slim man, though one couldn’t let his physique fool you. He was as strong as about ten men and was tougher than even the strongest boulders. The man’s name was Marco Moreno, an individual who was often referred to as being one with the earth.

That title wasn’t a joke either as he had the ability to move even the heaviest rock with only a flick of the wrist. The man had dark hair that he kept short, deep brown eyes, caramel brown skin, and was on the slim side. He wasn’t tall but he wasn’t short either. The man had recently been running from the government and from other mutants out to kill him so he took to hiding in the woods where no one could find him. He was in the middle of gathering some food for the fireplace and to heat up the rabbit and deer meat he had obtained.

Lyra ran through the woods as fast as she could. The eleven year old hoped she had succesfully escaped her persuers but did not slow down, just to be sure. But after a while her energy had been used up and she had to stop and take a breath, else she would have collapsed. She looked around and saw something ahead - a cottage. Maybe here she would find shelter from the elements and a place to hide. She approached it cautiously until she heard the sound of someone gathering firewood. Shit, the girl thought, apparently someone already occupied the cottage. But still the prospect of a couple of hours of rest was too tempting to resist and she decided to introduce herself to the man. "Hello? My name is Lyra and I got lost in these woods...", the girl said, now being able to take a closer look at the stranger. He didn´t seem dangerous at all. Maybe he was another outcast as well? With a hopeful smile she came closer and looked what he was doing. "Maybe I can help with that?", she offered with a sly grin and displayed one of her claws. If it wasn´t for those steel weapons of destruction she would seem very harmless. Just a slender eleven year old girl with long brown hair and blue eyes, dressed in a girly t-shirt and jeans.

Marco was planning on working the rest of the day, gathering the fire wood was just step one. Next he would go out to get some water for the small amount of crops he had been growing seeing as he was too far to always go out to get some food whenever he wanted. Speaking of crops, he would have to throw some of the ones he had out, thankfully it was only a small amount though. Marco continued to go his plan for the day in his hand until he sensed the presence of someone approaching him. Being an earth elemental allowed him to sense vibrations through the ground, but to be fair he had only just been practicing this power and could only see things for about one mile which would be impressive if he wasn’t in he woods which were much bigger than a mile. Before the girl even spoke he would turn around to see who it was that was intruding on him. When he found it was just an eleven year old girl he relaxed a little but was still on guard incase she tried anything. He wasn’t one who ignored the threat of anyone, not even children. When she introduced herself he began to wonder how long she had been in these woods. The moment she produced a claw he put the butt of the axe he was using in the ground, a slow rumble beginning to build up in the ground. It wouldn’t be noticeable to the girl yet but it was the first sign of his powers activating.

“Lyra,” he repeated her name and was surprised by the sound of his own voice. It had been so long since he had spoken to anyone that he had simply stopped talking all together. Hearing his voice he found it sounded nothing like he remembered as it was a bit deeper, though it still had a gentle sense to it. The girl in front of him didn’t seem too dangerous, despite the claws she had, but he was still cautious of her. “You want to help me cut down a tree? Why? Actually don’t answer that, who sent you here and are they with you now?” Yes Lyra had said that she had been lost in the woods but even with her attire he wasn’t sure he believed that story.

Lyras senses were quite keen so she noticed the rumbling in the ground, wondering what it meant. Certainly it was a power of some kind, so the man she met was a mutant after all. She hesitated before she spoke again, trying to ascertain how powerful he was. She heard the mans voice and was surprised how soothing it was, almost comforting. Yet he was mistrustful. Which was probably understandable considering how encounters between mutants usually turned out. "Nobody sent me, I came here on my own. Alltough there are people who follow me and want to hurt me.", she said and tried to get Marco to lower his guard alltough she wasn´t going for the pitiful little girl act others might have employed in her situation. "I need a place to stay, so yeah, if you let me I´ll help you cut that wood with my claws.", she added, sounding more confident now.

The man didn’t want to believe the girl as he had been tricked many times before, but the way she approached talking to him made her seem at least a little more truthful to her words than the others had been. Lyra spoke in a manner that wasn’t trying to make it sound like she was a delicate little girl, in fact she sounded confident that she could take care of herself and that all she needed was a place to stay, like she had asked for. Marco let out a sigh and the rumbling stopped as he hefted his axe over his back.

“Alright niña, get to cutting,” he said softly as he stepped away from the tree. “I’ll let you stay but you try one thing against me and you’re gone, both from this place and this world. Got it?” The last part was kind of a bluff as he wouldn’t really end her life if she tried to attack him, though he would make her leave. “You said your name was Lyra right? You can call me Marco Moreno, or just Marco is fine. I’ll come check on you in a bit, just finish cutting the wood I started and take it inside when you’re done.” After finishing his sentence he started to head over to where his crops were so he could plant a few more and water the rest.

She noticed how the rumbling stopped and saw it as a good sign. He still didn´t seem to fully trust her but he let his guard down and was willing to give her a chance. This was all she needed. His tone was a bit authorative as he told her to get cutting, but Lyra didn´t mind. After all she had just promised him to do this and the soft quality of his voice made it sound less harsh. Then he threatened to kill her should she try anything, but it didn´t frighten her since she didn´t intend to harm him. "Alright, Marco. I promise you won´t regret this.", she said with a slight smile and started to work. She was quite good at it, her mutant claws cutting the wood like it was butter. After about half an hour she was carrying a load of firewood almost twice her size to the cottage, almost stumbling a few times because of the weight.

He sure hoped he wouldn’t regret it but one could never be too sure. Her smile made him reconsider the somewhat harsh way he was speaking as she already set to work doing what she had promised to do. He’d make an effort to work on that while working on his crops. By the time he finished with them he returned to see that the young girl had already started heading back to his cottage with a large amount of wood that was getting ready to topple over from how unbalanced she was. He chuckled a little to himself as he watched her struggle and figured he might as well help her seeing as she had done as he had asked. “Looks like you did a good job niña,” he complimented while taking some of the wood from her to make it more manageable. “Here, let me help with that before you fall over.”

With the two of them working together they managed to get the firewood inside and placed it beside the fireplace. The inside of the cottage wasn’t something that was elegant or anything like that, but it was comfortable. The door opened up straight into the living room which held a recliner for whenever Marco wanted to read or just drink coffee, a sofa that could fit at least three people, a coffee table just in front of the sofa with a remote for the tv resting on it. He didn’t really watch much tv but it was there whenever he wanted to catch up on events in the world. The kitchen could be seen from the living room and so could a short hallway leading to the one bedroom he had and one bathroom.

Lyra simply nodded when he told her she had done a good job and accepted his help as the wood was really close to topple over due to how she was carrying it. Together they got the firewood inside and to its proper place. The girl looked around curiously, the cottage seemed even more comfortable then she had expected. There even was a Tv. "So... anymore chores that need to be done or are we finished for now?", she asked, not really tired from the wood chopping yet but definately eager to do something else or getting to know him better.

He went through the list of things that he had to do again in his head and found he needed to do some shopping out in the old town that was the closest near the woods. The journey from there and back would take him an hour but he didn’t really mind it as he was gonna he preparing lunch soon anyway. Yes he could still do shopping as he had been somewhat well off before he had gone into hiding, he wouldn’t need a job until after a few more years had passed which was just fine by him.

“We’re finished here, but I have to run to town to get some supplies,” Marco answered as he placed his hand on the ground. The floor began to shake ever so gently before a slot was opened in the wood just bug enough to fit his hand through. Once he grabbed the pouch that was underneath the floorboards the slot would close again. “You can stay here if you want or you can come with me.”

Lyra thought about his offer to go to town or stay at the cabin and pondered about what would be better for a few moments. She was kinda tired from running earlier and her feet hurt, yet it would also be nice not to be alone anymore. The girl also wasn´t that thrilled about going to civilization so soon again, since her persuers might track her down more easily there. She sighted. "I guess I will come with you.", she finally said and looked how he performed his tricl with the floorboards. "What are your powers by the way?", she asked curiously,"I felt you making the earth tremble earlier. Are they also hunting you because of this?"
