Little Ones at Pike Place
Daisy had never been so excited in her life, nor had she ever been so nervous. She was leaving Cerulean City today and departing by plane for the Hoenn region and Pike Place, where she would join Lucy. Today was also the day the first girls to be admitted into Lucy's and her orphan's home for trainers would arrive. At last, they'd be able to help some young trainers who had been bereaved of their parents and try to offer them the guidance, love and friendship they needed.
She kissed Misty, her younger sister and now the official gym leader, goodbye, then, taking her by the shoulders, drew her back to gaze at her. At fifteen, she'd grown so much taller, so beautiful and so grown-up.
"Be good and take care of yourself, Misty, okay?"

Lucy was just as nervous and excited as Daisy. The Battle Pike seemed like an odd place to house orphans, but there was a large back area where she herself lived that could comfortably house a fair number of people and their Pokemon. The girls would be arriving soon, and she was eager to meet them. She had been told about each of them by their social workers, but that was all she knew. All of them were between the ages of 10 and 13, which to Lucy seemed like a perfect age. Old enough to be fairly independent, but still young enough to warrant guidance. She couldn't wait.

Daisy arrived at Pike Place before the girls did. She met Lucy at the door and immediately embraced her. Her eyes were moist, both because of her joy and because of the fact that she'd left Misty.

Lucy embraced her back, thrilled to see her partner again after months of separation. "You'll see your sister again soon," she told her, sensing her sadness. "She is welcome to visit any time." Her mind was all over the place at the moment. She was elated to see Daisy, but the excitement of meeting the girls was coupled with nervousness, and she found herself coping with some... unpleasant thoughts. What if she couldn't make a difference in their lives. What if she wasn't warm enough to make them feel at home? That was part of the reason she had Daisy, but she couldn't help but consider the worst. She dwelt on those thoughts for a few moments before shaking her head, deciding she was better off keeping her positive attitude. Daisy seemed so assured that everything was going to go well, so why shouldn't she?

"I know." Daisy smiled shakily. "Its just. . .it wasn't so long ago that she was the same age as these little trainers, and now she's so grown-up."
She froze, hearing the ringing of the doorbell down the corridor. "They must be here - and I've hardly even gotten in! Lucy, do I look okay?"
The six young trainers had arrived in a van, which Brawly had driven. Some were laughing at stories he told to keep them amused and relax them, but others huddled into themselves, shy and afraid. Now they were here, coming up the corridor in a straight line.

Lucy wasn't sure what to say as they entered the Battle Pike. Most of them looked perfectly at ease, while two of them, who Lucy recognized at Moon and Serena looked quite nervous. She sympathized with them. If she were coming to a new home for the first time, she'd be quite on edge to. Lucy searched her mind, trying to remember what she knew about them. Moon was a 10-year-old Alolan girl whose mother had died in a surfing accident, and Serena was 13 years old and from Kalos. Her parents had died in a landslide. They both had Pokemon, but neither had ever really been a proper Trainer. That was the case with most of the girls here.

Daisy took a deep breath, forced herself to stop her nervous primping and fussing, and faced the girls. She gave them her most radiant smile.
"Hi, girls. I'm Daisy, and this is Lucy. She's the Pike Queen, but to you, we're only Daisy and Lucy. We're really excited to have you all coming to live with us. I know youre all great girls and were going to be friends!"
The silence that followed seemed to be far too long and too awkward to Daisy.
Then a girl said, "Thanks so much, Daisy and Lucy. I'm Rosa, and I'm eleven. I'm from Unova. This is my friend Moon. She's from Alola, and she's ten."
"I'm Mint," said another girl, seemingly encouraged by Rosa's confidence, "and this is my friend Kris. We're both twelve and Johto kids."

Leaf, the 10-year-old girl from Kanto nodded, but didn't offer any information about herself. Her file had said she was very quiet, possibly even elective mute. Her parents had never been a part of her life, and she hadn't had much schooling. She smiled only when she was with her Pokemon, Charmander and Pichu, but otherwise her face was typically a blank slate. Beside her was Hilda, the oldest of the girls. She was going on 14 and was from Unova. She folded her arms defensively, a look of distrust settling on her face. Like Leaf, she had never known her parents, but had a strong bond with her Pokemon, Pignite. She certainly didn't look happy to be there, Lucy thought.

Daisy, still smiling and hoping her unease didnt show, glanced at the faces of the three silent girls. "Hi, there, sweets. Can I have your names and ages?"
"That's Hilda," Rosa volunteered. "She's the biggest of us, but we don't know how old. That's Serena, who's thirteen, and that's Leaf, who's ten. She doesnt talk alot."
Daisy mustered her confidence and approached the girls. "Serena, hi. That's a pretty name, and youre very pretty, too. I know with a name like that, you'll be a nice girl." Oh, what a stupid thing to say. Next, she tried with Hilda. "And. . .your name is beautiful, too. I hope to get to know you better."
She stopped beside Leaf, and, after hesitating, knelt and tried to meet her eyes.
"Hun, you dont need to talk if you dont want to," she said softly. "I just want you to know I was an orphan, too, so I can understand some of what you feel. Even if you never say a word, I hope to get to know you better, too."

Leaf sniffed, but didn't say anything back. Having just turned 10, she was the youngest, and by far the smallest. Lucy was a little concerned about interacting with a child who was able to talk but chose not to. The psychologist she'd spoken to after reading Leaf's file for the first time assured her that the best course of action was to just proceed normally with her. Talk to her, include her in conversation, and should she ever actually choose to speak, not to treat it as a particularly special event.
Serena smiled at Daisy's compliment, but Lucy was aware that she spoke mostly Kalosian, and she was still learning to speak their language. She would need extra lessons, which Lucy and Daisy were more than happy to provide. Hilda looked away with a sour expression when Daisy tried to engage her. "Whatever..." she muttered.
