Even Heroes Need A Hand

Lois Lane had endured a lifetime of being called "bossy," or something that conveyed the same meaning. As far back as she could remember, there was always someone pointing out how she felt she had to control every situation. Her younger sister would cry to their parents when Lois would not compromise on what games they played, and it continued throughout school and into college. Now, as an adult, it was a quality that served her well. Her "bossiness" had allowed her to obtain her dream job as a star reporter working for one of the largest newspapers in the country. Her coworkers occasionally lamented being told what to do, but she was comfortable with her dominance. This carried over into her relationship with her younger girlfriend, Kara.

Clark Kent couldn’t be happier that Lois found someone better than him. Sure, they tried it for a little bit, but after a mutual agreement, he introduced Kara to Lois and they instantly struck it off. Their first date was about a year ago, and Clark made sure to keep a careful eye on the two, half for protection, and half to see how he can be better for his next suitor. Them being so close to the two made it easier to go to them if a problem arrived. Knocking on Lois’ door, he gave a gentle wave before he walked in “Hey Lois, I need to talk to you about something…it’s important” the geeky and wimpy Clark is a lot more awkward than Superman, but he had to keep up the façade whenever they’re at work. Closing the door behind him, he sat down and sighed “She doesn’t listen to me anymore, and it’s like her mind is always on something else”

Lois offered Clark a seat across from her desk and got him a cup of water from the cooler in the corner of her office. In truth, wasn't the least bit surprised to hear that. However, she was surprised to hear Clark speaking like this was something he'd just discovered. She'd known since meeting Kara just how headstrong (and sometimes distractable) she could be, and her cousin knew it even better than her--after all, when push came to shove, Kara did listen to Lois. Most people did.

"Well, I hate to say it, but I guessed it was only a matter of time," Lois admitted. "She loves and respects you, Clark, but... you two do sometimes butt heads about what's best for her. She's an adult now and she wants to make her own decisions without someone else's input. And technically, you are younger than her. It's probably never been entirely comfortable for her to take orders from someone she remembers as her baby cousin."

Clark was hoping he could handle family matters behind closed doors, but when push comes to shove, Kara is so stuck in her path, nothing Clark can do can change her mind. Politely taking the cup, he shook his head “I only butt heads with her because I know I’m right…okay, perhaps that came off egotistical. It’s just, I’ve been doing this longer, and I know how to handle situations better than her. It shouldn’t be about age Lois, it’s about experience and we both know that. Comfortable or not, she’s endangering innocent lives because of how headstrong she is. I don’t want to treat her like some child, but until she shows me some respect, she leaves me no choice.

"Don't worry, it did come off as egotistical. But I won't hold it against you. I agree, at least to an extent. You have been a hero much longer than Kara's even been on Earth. This isn't to call her incompetent by any means, but there are times she takes reckless chances that really aren't necessary. I get on her case about it later, and she acts abashed and plays it safer for a week. But when that week's up, she goes right back to her old ways. I don't know what you mean when you say she 'leaves you no choice' though. Didn't you once say she was even more powerful than you? It's not like anyone can restrain her physically."

“Yeah, I was afraid of that” he sighed, but listened to Lois’ remarks. At least she agrees with the man in some retrospect. “If a week’s the best you can do for me, I’ll take it. Of course I’d prefer more, but I’m not going to ask for more if you don’t want me to. Thank you Lois” he was about to go right back to work before the big question was brought up “Well, maybe not me, but you can. I can ask the police for some of Luther’s kryptonite they snatched from him. They keep it in a special box so if I retrieve it, it won’t have any effect, but the second I open it I’m powerless. If push comes to shove, it’ll also make her powerless and perhaps someone can deal with her then. I’d hate to do it, but it’s better than risking innocent lives because of her recklessness.

Lois heard him out, but she wasn't sure she was too keen on the idea. Some kryptonite would incapacitate Earth's Kryptonians, but too much of it could be seriously harmful. Deadly, even. But he was correct that it could get Kara to stop what she was doing, if Lois needed that.
"You're sure that's a good idea, Smallville? I'm worried something like that could hurt her. I know nothing about kryptonite. What if I exposed her to too much of it?"

“No if we’re being honest, but it’s either that or challenging her to a fight which would cause unnecessary destruction”. He began before placing a hand on the woman’s shoulder “You’ll know you’ve exposed her to too much if her skin begins turning green. If that happens, put the green kryptonite away and give her some time. She’ll be fine” he tried to reassure with a soft smile.

"This whole thing seems weird, Clark. Also, I'm her girlfriend, not her mother. I realize getting her to slow down sometimes is a safety issue, but is it really my responsibility?"

“Lois I” and this was one thing she always told him, think about what you’re going to say before you say it. Standing up, he placed a hand on her shoulder with a soft, understanding smile. “I understand, and I was only asking for a favor since she seems to actually care about what you say. I guess family matters should stay in the family. Clara’s my responsibility, and mine alone, thanks for the advice”. Giving her one last pat, he turned around about to walk out.
