Scarecrow and the Paper-Fan
(For Animeluver17)
"Mmm..." Kakashi groaned as he kneaded the back of his neck, stubby fingers massaging at the taut muscles there. He was a wreck lately... Becoming a sensei to three obnoxious brats was really taking a hold on him. The year before, he had once more failed two sets of genin hopefuls, tossing them back to the academy and their parents with their tails between their shaking legs, without a second thought. Thinking he would never gain a squad of his own. But here he was, a year later, and the proud captain of Squad Seven. He'd been a fool to think that they'd be an easy bunch to deal with... he would have said that he hoped for child's play, but... at times, he really thought that was the only game his talented young students actually understood.
The one other guy who was willing to be on close and warm terms with the copy-ninja of Konoha was sitting beside the shinobi, boasting all kinds of feats about his squad, one that he had taken an instant liking to from the word go, a year ago. With that little tidbit of experience, the hot-blooded jounin seemed to think that he knew all there was to know about any kind of sensei problem. Emotional, ethical, logical, spiritual... at times like this, times that the raven-haired jounin got so full of concern for his eternal rival's teaching techniques that he decided to lecture the other man's ear to pieces, Kakashi wished that he had taken Gai up on his challenge offer in place of a afternoon drink.
"Gai-kun..." the copy-ninja murmured half-heartedly, his eye smiling anxiously, knowing from intimate experience what was coming. Here comes a hot-blooded lecture...
"Kakashi... you're not taking the initiative !" Gai growled, folding his arms and closing his eyes for emphasis, "those kids are gonna walk all over you if you don't teach them that you're not a guy to mess with... Not the one true rival of Konoha's Beautiful Blue Beast, Maito Gai!" waves crashed and the air sparkled, and Kakashi simply stared lazily.
"What... what I mean to say is," the raven-haired jounin continued, nudging close to the other shinobi, moving close to a pale ear as Kakashi leaned in in an indolent fashion, "You need to show 'em who's boss! Why, my students are fine and fit, and obey my commands without even entertaining doing otherwise!" he exaggerated a tad, "All because of a little sensei-student bonding, and that hot tough love that we all grew up with!" he clenched a fist at the end of his dramatic statement, and then gave a hefty punch to the other man's shoulder.
The burnt-out jounin poured himself a little more spirit from the other jounin's glass, ignoring Gai's glare, and leaning forward to take a sip. With a bob of his adams apple, Kakashi replied with all the patience and idleness he possessed, "Gai-kun... I don't think that those kids would ever accept that... not from me," he blinked. What an old-fashioned approach... Gai seemed to forget that he and his, uh... 'rival' were the same age...
"Nonsense! There's a connection. I sense it between you and your students... well, the Uchiha boy particularly," he did not want to bring up tenderness in his dear rival's past by stating how much young Naruto looked like... him...
"Like Neji, my adorable and talented rookie, Sasuke has that punk attitude... reminds me of someone from years back," he smirked, dark eyes boring into Kakashi as the copy-ninja nodded slowly,
"Yare, yare... you've noticed it too, huh?" How the Uchiha was so like himself... It was as plain as day. As plain as his scar.
He didn't want the boy to follow the path of an emotionally distant fool as he had once been. The boy who made a single mistake and paid so dearly. The jounin with the pale hair stared into his sake, lost in the past, in a moment of despair. He wanted, in his heart, maybe selfishly... for his little Uchiha to make the right choices... and to live happily...
Yare, yare... he was thinking too deeply for a bento break... he'd have to check up on his squad soon. Kakashi kneaded his neck again, heaving a sigh.

>3< That was a great start~ Much, much, better than mine would have been. XD
***
The young raven haired Uchiha walked through the village, hands in his pockets. He was in search of his sensei, Kakashi, of whom he'd said he would help Sasuke with his training today. The Chunnin exams were drawing near, and Kakashi had been specially training Sasuke for the past week or too. Of course, every genin who took part in the exams needed some sort of training. Why did Sasuke go in search or his sensei, you ask? Kakashi was supposed to meet him at their destination about an half an hour ago; the Uchiha boy had become inpatient and wandered off, looking from shop to shop to find him. He looked to the side, and let out a small sigh. There he was.
He held back the curtain to the entrance and poked his head in. "Kakashi..." he started, then continued when the gray-haired sensei turned to face him. " You were supposed to start training with me over an hour ago. I was at the spot, and all, but you never showed up; so I came looking for you."

"Mm, Gomen ne, Sasuke..." Kakashi waved a hand to disarm, seemingly apologetic... if a slightly indolent apology, turning to the raven-haired man who glared fiery holes into the back of his silvery head. Probably, there'd be another lecture on its way...
"I was having a discussion with Gai here, and I guess I got a little... caught up..." his visible eye smiled, and pressing gloved palms to the table, he pushed himself into a languid stand, "Alright; let's get going..." Pushing the remains of his sake shot to Gai on his way out, the sluggish jounin was rewarded with a wink and a blinding nice-guy grin, sending him on his way into the street.
"So, my little Uchiha... did you make use of your break?" The copy-ninja murmured with amiable grace, fingers reaching into his pocket to tug out his dog-eared Icha Icha bodice ripper. He flicked it open, held his place with a thumb, and then glanced at the younger shinobi over the top of it, "Hmm?"

Sasuke shrugged a bit, and shoved his hands in his pockets. "Well, I took the time to go over some jutsu's again and again when you didn't show up. A trained a bit, you could say." he replied, looking down at the ground. "But, enough about what I did earlier; what's on the adgenda today, Kakashi?" the raven haired asked, his gaze wandering up to his sensei's masked face. The Uchiha was rather eager to train today; he needed to become a chunnin, and in order to do that, he needed to pass the exams. After that, he'd be one step closer to beating Itachi.

"Mm. You're eager, today..." Kakashi smiled beneath his mask, in spite of his weariness. It was refreshing to see the boy genuinely interested in what his ease of experience could offer. He paused to lower his bodice-ripper, lone eye crinkling up in intrigue, "You're set on passing your exams..." but he knew that was not where the desire ended... not for a long-shot. His thumb tightened on his novelette, and he sent an idle glance to the remaining Uchiha, "Well, since you're set on it, Sasuke, we're going to see how that speed of yours has been manipulated. I want you to show me how you've grown. What Lee's taijutsu has taught you," his visible eye deepened purpose, "Then we'll talk about what I'm prepared to teach you."

"You mean Rock Lee? From Gai's team?" the Uchiha questioned, looking up to his sensei's masked face. "So, this training has to do with chakra manipulation, but at the same time, it has to do with speed, eh?" he asked, getting a bit eager. "Sounds like you know a lot about this technique you're going to show me. So, you want me to show you how my speed has improved, correct? Then you'll tell me about the jutsu you'll teach me?" he asked, now become almost impatient, but, he kept calm in his state of eagerness.

"Hai," Kakashi nodded simply, warmly, even. He recalled years ago when he had been in the same position with his own sensei; been brash and taking the bull by the horns. When he had first used the uncharted 'chidori' and given away his position against the will of Konoha's Yellow Flash. He also recalled the consequences of his rashness, but wisely decided to end his flashback where he was standing victorious over his foes. No need to recall nightmares when they had already happened, after all.
He guessed that's where Gai had gotten his sensei ideals from... Scratching the back of his head, the silver-haired copy-ninja gazed at the youth so like his younger self, and blinked, "You've been practicing your taijutsu, though, haven't you? What you picked up from your Sharingan..." They continued to walk together, until they both stood by the calm brook, and a clearing of trees which Kakashi had secured for them both. The sensei then leaned back against a tree, and looked at the raven-haired youth expectantly, "Alright... show me, Sasuke."

"Hm?" the Uchiha asked, cocking his head slighty. "What do you want me to show you? My speed cordination along with my Sharingan skills And the taijutsu I have learned?" he asked, stretching himself out a bit. "What am I supposed to do, practice on a tree? Or..." he trailed off. "Were you going to summon a clone and spar with me during this process?" he asked, raising an eyebrow at his sensei

"Listen," Kakashi responded, perhaps a tad more shortly than he had intended, "stop giving me attitude, and just show me the exercises that you've been working on. Your speed; what you have learned from Rock Lee, is all I'm interested in right now... without that speed... I've no time for you." his dark eye fixed on Sasuke solidly, gravely, and he arched his back against the tree, hands diving into his pockets, "Stop talking and show me what you've got."
The kid acted so high and mighty... just like he had back in the day... he was starting to understand when Yondaime-sensei had gotten pissed at him on the odd occasion. His eye crinkled into a forced grin, "Give it your best shot... if you're not there yet, we'll just start off from the beginning... ne?"

Sasuke didn't like the vibe Kakashi just threw at him, and he scoffed a bit, summoning a clone of his own. "Alright." he replied, and the clone began to attack. Swiftly, The Uchiha disappeared, dodging the clone's attack. Then, he landed a solid kick right at the back on the clone's head, sending the clone flying forward. The clone started to do some quick handsighs, and Sasuke activated his Sharingan. "Katon!" the clone yelled, and in an instant, before the clone could send a fireball in his direction, Sasuke sent the clone flying into the air with a kick. He jumped up into the air, grabbed the clone by wrapping his arms and legs around him, and sent the clone flying to the ground with a loud CRASH. Debris flew every where; Sasuke stood up straight and sent a small glare to Kakashi. "How was that?" he panted a bit. "I think I've improved a lot on my speed; last time I tried that move, I wasn't able to finish it as quickly as I am now."
