~ Summer 2010 - AnimeOTK Art Contest ~
The theme:
Historical Spankings and Spankings during History
As discussed in the ideas thread. Spankings and Pairings can be at any time in history as well as the place. Ancient Egypt, Ancient China, Victorian England.
Alternate histories are allowed but need to be more historical based than steam-punk.
Time-travellers welcome, but its not the idea.
Create an image showing a spanking either in your favourite period of history or historical in any context that appeals to you~
The Judging:
By popular demand, there will be two winners chosen: one via public vote, the other via a panel of judges.
Closing Date for entries Saturday 14th August, 2010.
Post questions and queries here in this thread~

Nice timing Robbie dear
I'm starting some vacation tomorrow, so I'll have more than enough time to work onto something

I'm not sure if I like the judging; I'd rather have the people vote.

Yes to democracy, no to plutocracy. Let the community vote. None of these people are any more qualified to judge a picture than the rest of us.

After the success of Cc's competition voting, we'll be following suit.
Democracy on this site is an excercise of watching either the chatroom or Mina's forest blocs take over and people whining they only got one vote after they drew sonic or pikachu (badly).
I didn't hear anybody complaining when Cc announced it so I don't expect to see the same to this contest (least of all from other mods, in public!!). It worked really well for her competition and I'm certain it'll work really well here AND will garantee every entry gets consideration and a mark on its own merits without unfair comparison to its peers.
Do a good job and any budding artist could beat CM_Zero with this judging form. The only person who ought to be complaining, is him.

I like the judging system this way, to be quite honest. I've seen abuse from some lurkers when they rate pictures, so I imagine it can be applied the voting system as well. Not to mention that people can get one or two friends to sign up and nudge the votes in their direction, if they felt like cheating themselves and others. Even if they do it in a way that the mods catch on and can deal with it, it still means that the poll would have to be entirely reset for the other contestants.
Plus there's a huge bias with pairings or friends that can get in the way. I found Cc's method extremely fair. It gives every single entry some kind of feedback - and low numbers are not exactly positive feedback, but they at least can tell a person where they stand in what of the three areas being judged. I think this way gives some critique.
I admit, I can understand why people are uncomfortable with everything being left up to three mods, rather than just the community - they could use their biases just as much as the rest of the community. But in the case of Cc's contest, I know her preferences yet I did not feel like that in any shape or form made her decisions about the winners. ^^; So I have faith in this, I guess.
(I don't want to offend anyone - there might be something I'm missing, I'm sure. I'm not here to argue, but I thought I'd throw in my thoughts. ;-; )
I'm definitely going to enter if I find the time and come up with an idea by then. I'm already thinking over it. No guarantees I'll submit anything, but I'm not ruling it out either. And good luck to everyone who enters.

Except that it was Cc's contest and she can do what she wants, and it ended up being somewhat flawed due to bias that she personally announced after the contest had ended. Additionally, Cc is an art major. I'd say she knows what she's talking about. But who are the mods Rob is choosing? How many of them know or care about skill or completeness or whatever?
Bias will still exist. It just won't be the bias you're familiar with or it will be bias you are more in favor of. Just because you add an arbitrary number system doesn't mean that people care about it, and won't still vote it in favor of what they like. You aren't fixing the problem, you're restricting the pool and handing out member's only jackets.

This method gives a good and fair mark to all entries, a comparable score and the chance to beat CM_Zero in a straight fight. Obviously I'll tell who the judges are after the closing date because I don't want any influence being put on them or anyone drawing to their tastes.
I'm glad to see a few good names already signed up for this, I hope with the History theme a lot of people have their interests piqued!

I'm all in favour of this judging system, and with the judges giving specific marks it's more interesting and more fair in my opinion. There will always be a little bias but I trust a specific panel to judge more on art and less on friendship than the community as a whole, which is perfectly normal, plus it'll be obvious to everyone if the marks are really skewed.
So count me in
