It was a sunny day and most of the children were playing outside. They laughed and were happy. Almost perfect. But they all were in an orphanage. They had no parents to look after. Just the kind Nuns who loved them like they own children.

Apart from the group of playing children was a young girl of 8 years. She was sitting under a tree and was reading. Her name was Sandy and she was well known. Most of the Nuns feared her temper tantrums and bad behavior. So they rather did what she wanted to keep the peace. Her parents were unknown. She was found on the stairs of the orphanage.

Father Lawrence was a young man who had taken his oath with no reservation in his heart. He had lived in Germany for most of his life until the recent years, at which time he had found himself in England. He had been happy to help clear the rubble that the war had left behind and now he found himself helping care for the orphans that the fighting had left.

He was not anymore loved or hated than any parental figure and often behind his back his accent was mocked, putting him in the position of ‘Nazi’. The sisters would hush this as best as they could to keep it from his ears but in exchange they found themselves seeking his help with one of the children more than most.

Today he walked to where she sat under a large willow tree and knelt down under shelter created by the weeping branches. He rested a gentle hand on her red cotton covered shoulder and spoke to her with a smile. “On a warm day such as this, wouldn’t you prefer to play ball with the other girls rather than ask Father Willow so many questions?” He questioned.

Sandy looked up and saw Father Lawrence. She secretly liked him but was as naughty to him as to anyother. So she frowned and said: " I won´t play ball with these whiny girls. Last time I did they cried and I had to do chores. And now I wanna be left alone. Don´t you have something to do? Pray or talk to God?" In fact last time she shoot the ball too harsh and it hurt a young girl of 6 years. The Nuns were so angry that they punished her by doing chores.

“Well, Sandy, I’m sure if you’re mindful of the other children’s feelings then there will be no extra chores waiting for you after the game.” Father Lawrence offered, adding a few more things to this without pause. He wanted the girl to understand that she was welcome to join in the games but he didn’t approve of her hurtful words in the least.

“I also think you mustn’t put such titles on them, I myself would have let out a few whimpers at being bruised with the ball.” That was unlikely but then he might have had he been six so he didn’t consider it a lie.

“Don´t you have something to do? Pray or talk to God?" Sandy had asked and the priest nodded his head at the mocking question. “I do have something to do and that is to speak with you, I’m not going to force you to play with the other girls but I think if you tried you would find you enjoyed yourself. Some of the children are new to the orphanage and would be more than happy to meet a new friend.”

Sandy sighed and frowned at the priest. " I don´t care about the others! I want my peace. And as you said yourself, you´re not going to force me." She looked into the priest´s eyes and felt loved. She had the urge to huggle the priest but looked away and growled: " My only friends are the books and now I want ou to sod off!"

Father’s Lawrence’s grass green eyes shone with disapproval and he stood up, the willow branches brushing against the shoulders of his cassock. “That was a bit much, Fraulein.” He said with a no-nonsense tone, his expression no longer the easy gentle looks but now a stern unhappy eye. He had heard the nuns' use the term 'Bite your tongue' when the children used words or phrase that were purposefully rude or hurtful but as he expected obedience this was not his favored way.

“With me.” He ordered instead, which was his way of saying he was removing a child for discipline and that they were to fall to his side and follow him. Supposedly that would keep them from being teased and they would learn to take their punishment with humility. In reality all of the children knew what it meant if you were following so closely with such a down-trodden look.

Sandy closed her book angrily and stood up. She followed the priest and sighed. " You going to give me some chores aren´t you? Well I will tell you something! I DON´T CARE!" she shouted and kicked a stone.

Some of the children looked at her while they played and the nuns too. She pulled her tongue out and followed Father Lawrence inside.

(I'm glad it comes off as true. I'm enjoying this story so far. =D)

Father Lawrence would have loved to have given a sign of annoyance or an exhausted gesture just to get rid of some of his exasperation at her screaming and temper. He wouldn’t however because had faced worse things than a little girl kicking stones and he couldn’t allow her to see she had gotten any reaction in that way. He had to be the calm solid figure in her life.

He wasn’t going to give her chores either, he found that offering extra work seemed to suggest that work was a punishment of sorts and it was not to be thought of in that manner. They did, however, move to the kitchen and he picked up a small hand towel and washed it liberally in soap and water. The damp worn rag glistened with the dishwashing soap and he turned to her with a nod.

“Open your mouth.” He ordered.

Sandy followed him in the kitchen and looked interessted at what he was doing. She scratched her head and trought he might want her to wash but then he ordered her to open her mouth.

Sandy frowned again. "Why should I?" she asked looked at the towel. "You´re not gonna put that in my mouth are you?" she asked

“I do indeed.” Father Lawrence replied, meeting Sandy’s eyes with a firm look of resolve. He wasn’t going to be swayed on the situation, it was after all quite suiting to the crime. “The language you used soiled your lips and this seems fitting, Fraulein.” He reminded her.

“The term ‘Sod off’ is entirely inappropriate, no matter your feelings.” He lectured, reaching down to take her chin into a work roughed hand. If she wouldn’t open her own mouth for him, he would slip it between her lips. He would have preferred her submission to the punishment however, so he waited.
