"Welcome, Doctor," one of the functionaries at the Justice Department shook Dr. Kusanagi's hand and lead him into the courthouse.

"I'm really glad you were called in for this case, Doctor. We were all very impressed with your work on the last Penitata given to your care. Everyone's read your latest paper, as well," the functionary continued, dry-washing his hands as he rattled on subserviently.

That was fine. Kusanagi liked people to be subservient. He was a Psychologist, PhD, and he liked order, hierarchy, establishment. He was not called on to serve as a single parent for hard Penitata cases because he was a spanko or particularly enjoyed punishment, but because he was demanding, exacting, controlling, meticulous and took little bits of joy from breaking down people's psychological walls, leaving them bare and helpless to the world.

Kusanagi was tall for a Japanese man, and well into his later years. His hair was a shocking contrast of black and white, and his face bore severe lines due to a significant lack of smiling. He hated the loss of control over one's life that came with rejuvenation, so he always waited as long as possible before he became a Voluntara.

"This one is starting at 4? That will be a first, for me," Kusanagi said, touching one hand to his chin thoughtfully. "Maybe I'll have enough material for another paper when I'm done with this one. You said I'll be meeting her before the rejuvenation?"

"Yes, yes, the guards should be bringing her here any moment, and then we can all go into the 'execution' chamber," the functionary said, looking toward the door.

The two of them waited in silence for the sentenced woman to be dragged through the doors of the Justice building on her way to fulfill her sentence.

"Get your fucking hands off me, ya savages!" Came a voice as a woman in her late twenties was dragged in. She had long, purple-ish hair and red eyes. "I know how to walk, you damn ape!" She added as they continued to drag her.

Kusanagi and the Justice Department guy with him exchanged a glance. Kusanagi gave a tight, wry smile.

"It will be interesting to see what kind of four-year-old she makes," Kusanagi observed dryly. The man with him chuckled lightly.

"Shiko," one of the judges in the Rejuvination Chamber addressed the woman. "You will now be Rejuvinated to the age of 4 years for your first cycle of punishment. Due to the nature of your crimes your guardian is here with us..." the judge indicated Kusanagi, who gazed at Shiko steadily and coldly, "... and, upon Rejuvination, you will be leashed and given directly to his care. You will then serve out a harsh sentence for 4 years at which point you will be re-assessed. Do you have any final words before the rejuvination?"

"Yeah, yeah, I heard at the court hearing." Shiko said as they explained her rejuvenation. At the end when she was asked her final words, she gave them a look. "Fuck you." She said simply.

"A singly un-creative girl, isn't she," Kusanagi observed. "That's her parting remark? It shouldn't be too hard to break her. If she can't think up something longer than four letters to say I doubt she'll be able to formulate a method of resisting loss of self."

The guards roughly shoved Shiko into the machine and, within quite a short amount of time, it was over. Shiko was callously stripped of the now over-sized clothing and a small metal collar was snapped around her neck, the leash attached to which was handed over to Kusanagi.

He accepted the leash and held it tight in his right hand as he squatted down to meet the 4-year-old's eyes levelly.

"Well then young lady, we'll get to introductions later, for now let's just try to get you home without too much incident. First, though, how are you feeling? No adverse reaction to the rejuvenation?"

He asked not out of kindness or any sympathy, but merely to see how the little girl would respond and how she would express herself from the mouth of four-year-old. Without taking his attention from the girl, Kusanagi pulled on a white kid-glove on his right hand, a gesture seemingly unrelated to his question.

"My head jus' hurts, mister..." Shiko replied, looking up at with a mix of fear and nervousness. "What the glove for. , ?"

Kusanagi was a bit taken aback by the humble response. He had been expecting at least a little remaining flare of rebelliousness. Was it because her age was so low now? Interesting. Very interesting. He was already fascinated by this case. He couldn't wait to test her limits. But, first things first...

"I put this glove on when I'm about to slap you. I was expecting you to say something rude, in which case I would have used the back of my hand... but, even still..."

He drew back his hand a little, but not all the way, and delivered a sharp slap to Shiko's right cheek.

"'JusT,' 'jusT'. I don't care what age they made you, you're going to use proper pronunciation. Also you missed the is. 'What is the glove for'. Before you open your stupid little mouth spend a few seconds thinking about what you're going to say, then take your time saying it so you don't babble like that. Any time you make a mistake like that I will slap you. You'll either learn to speak perfectly or learn to keep quiet. Either way works for me. Now let's go, follow me,"

He stood and gave a nod to the functionaries, who came and gave him a little bundle of paperwork, then he gave a sharp tug on the leash, signalling for the girl to begin following him.

Shiko yelped as she was slapped, tears forming in her eyes. As he spoke, she whimpered and started crying softly. When the leash was tugged, she quickly followed, rubbing her cheek mark.
