Chad pulls his car up into the driveway, getting out with a deep sigh. After a long day at work, he silently wishes for a peaceful evening at home, and no problems to greet him at the door when he walks in. Knowing his luck, though, there would be a small disaster waiting for him, as his son has been home for several hours, already. While the boy should be able to take care of himself after school, this works more in theory than practice. Unlocking the front door and letting himself in, Chad looks around nervously, wondering what situation was going to welcome him home and prevent him from settling down for a rest in his favorite recliner.

“Daddy's home!”

Thirteen year old, Jason, looked up from his homework, rather innocently. He was supposed to have done this essay a few days ago, but he'd put it off, and it was due the next day. Not that he'd told his father he hadn't done it.
"Hey, Dad!" he called from the dining room.

Chad follows the sound of his son's voice, stepping into the dining room to see what the boy is up to. He breathes a sigh of relief when he sees Jason at the table doing his homework. Usually, coming home this late on a weeknight gave his son ample opportunity to find himself in some kind of trouble. This time, though, it appears that he is working diligently on tomorrow's schoolwork.

“Hard at work, I see. So, what class is this for? It's not often that you start your homework without being nagged about it.”

He takes off his coat and lays it across the back of one of the chairs before he heads into the kitchen to find something in the freezer for them to have for supper. Not being much of a cook, he just plans on heating up some microwave dinners for the two of them. Then, he would be able to put his own on a plate and go relax in his recliner to watch some recorded shows on the cable box.

“Spaghetti and meatballs sound okay?”

Jason winced a bit.
"Just some work for English," he said, evasively.
He watched his father go into the kitchen and nodded.
"Spaghetti and meatballs sounds great, Dad," he agreed.

He stood, wanting a break anyways and walked into the kitchen to grab a juice.

Chad takes a couple of spaghetti and meatball dinners out of the freezer, reading over the instructions to see how they need to be cooked. Taking one out of the box, he cuts a slit in the plastic covering and then puts it in the microwave for a few minutes to heat up. As he watches the plate spin, he calls back into the dining room.

“What are you doing for English? Maybe it's something that I can help you with?”

Jason shrugged.
"NOthing, really. Just some homework. I can do it," he said, smiling.

He leaned against the counter sipping his juice.

Walking back into the dining room while the first plate of spaghetti is cooking, he moves over to Jason's side and starts to look over the boy's shoulder.

Jason bit his lip, and covered his work with his arm.
"Dad, that makes me nervous," he said, hoping he hadn't noticed it was homework he was supposed to have done before.

“Now, don't be ridiculous, Jason. Just let me see it. What on earth has gotten into you?”

Perturbed by his son's behavior, Chad grips the boy's hand and lifts it enough to pull the papers out from underneath. He quickly scans the work that Jason appears to be busy with, quickly recognizing the assignment from a week ago.

“Young man, isn't this the essay that your teacher sent home with you last Tuesday? Why are you only getting around to doing it today? Isn't it supposed to be turned in tomorrow?” You had all weekend to get this finished.”

Jason grimaced as his father took it and started asking questions about it.
"Yes, I got it last week, but I was busy all weekend...I'm almost done," he said, softly, hoping that would help.
