It was nearing dusk in hte city. Shadows were spreading out from the huge buildings as the remaining sunlight spread its orange glow, speckled with pink and purple highlights from the few clouds that lingered in the wake of the tropical storm that ravaged about most of the day

In one of hte suburbs that got the brunt of hte storm, it showed many signs of damage left behind by the storm. Some homes were tattered, but not enough to require much repair work. Trees and flora had been uprooted and tossed about by the wind, a few loose branches causing roadblocks here an there

In one of hte houses that suffered minimal damage, a young girl had been wasting the time by running around the house, particularly in an area that was off-limits to her. But she hardly cared right now, as anything was better than cowering in hte storm shelter all day. Not to mention she had pretty much mimiced the storm by having neary the same amount of energy. So sitting still was hardly on her mind right now

Coming back inside after taking a quick inspecting of the damage to his home, Mark dusts off some of the excess moisture that had dripped on him from the trees overhanging his house. Considering how many branches dangled overhead, it had been a stroke of luck that the house had been spared from any real catastrophe. He knows that far more were not as lucky. Noting that his daughter has once again disappeared on him, he calls through the house to get her attention.

“Honey! Where are you at, now? It's about time for dinner, so I need to see what we can eat.”

Unfortunately, they had still lost power during the worst of the storm, and it had not yet been restored. At best, it may still be several more hours until power would come back on, so they would have to make do with whatever they had that they didn't have to cook, and would try to stay out of the refrigerator if they didn't absolutely need something out of it.

The young girl was now laying on the floor, panting from running aorund. SHe glanced around as she heard her dad call. SHe got up and wnt down the hall to the stairs. As soon as she saw him, she half hopped down the stairs and went up to him

Mark smiles, running his hand through her hair.

“What have you been getting into, sweetie? Enjoying having the lights off for a bit?”

Taking her by the hand, he walks her into the kitchen to see what he can find for dinner. Not wanting to open the refrigerator unless he has to, he starts to check through the pantry to see if there's anything that they can eat without having to cook.

“Well, it looks like we're going to have dry cereal, or canned corn.”

"Not really" Alyssa said a they entered the kitchen. "It's still scary, even though the storm has stopped."

She then gave a look of disgust as he mentioned what they'd be eating

Mark sees the grimace on his daughter's face, and sympathizes with her.

“I know, sweetie, but we have to eat something that we don't have to cook, and we have to try not to open the refrigerator until we have to. I'll get the radio set up in a little bit and we'll listen for updates from the power company. If it sounds like the power's going to be down for longer than a couple more hours, we'll start eating the stuff in the freezer before it spoils. So, put up with canned corn now, and you might have soft ice cream as a midnight snack.”

He grins, moving to the utensil drawer and pulling out the can opener.

“And, besides, it could be worse. There's a show on television now about everything electric on the planet just turning off and never coming back on. The little girl on the show gets to eat the ice cream out of the freezer, though it will be the last ice cream that she ever gets to eat.”

Opening the can, Mark strains off the excess water and then splits the corn into two bowls, giving one to his daughter and sitting down with the other one in front of him.

“Thankfully, ours will only be off a day or so, at the most, so we'll still be able to buy more ice cream if we end up eating what we have.”

“I know, sweetie, but we have to make do until the power comes back on.”

Mark starts to eat the unheated corn, not really happy with the option, either. Still, he knows that they have to eat something.

“Tell you what. If you look around the pantry and find any charcoal, I'll fire up the grill tonight and cook us some chops if the power isn't back on. If I open the freezer, though, we'll have to eat as much of what's in there as possible, so we'll be having ice cream for dessert, too.”
