Marnie was worried. She had decided she very much deserved a well-earned shopping trip, and her husband of two years, York, had approved. She was originally intended to spent $100, but the shops allured her. She ended up spending $400.

She knew York would be upset with her, and she would apologize profusely, but perhaps she could sway his anger if she proved how worth it that it was! Buy one pair of heels, get the second almost half off! That had to be justifiable, right?

She paced the living room, nervously brushing back her hair and biting her thumb nail, waiting for York to get home. She had already done the laundry and the dishes. She just hoped he hadn't already checked the credit card balance.

York was a man who would trust his wife to the end, and therefore, saw no reason to check the credit card balance before leaving work for home. After budgeting their income, York had found it perfectly acceptable for Marnie to indulge in a little shopping. After all, she would only spend $100. She was a good girl... He knew he could rely on her to stay within her price range. Still, the man couldn't deny that it was odd that Marnie's face bore an expression of nervousness upon his entrance into the front room of their apartment.

"Hi, honey," York greeted warmly, although his green eyes betrayed clear suspicion. "How was shopping today?" he asked casually, unbuttoning the collar the tan dress shirt he had worn to work. With a slightly muscular build like his, such attire could get tight and uncomfortable after a full day of work.

Marnie shuddered uncomfortably and involuntarily when York walked in. She put on a plastic smile and rushed over to him and kissed his cheek swiftly. "Hi love," she said quickly, "It went... Well... How was work?"

York had caught the little shiver that ran up his wife's spine. This did not stop him from embracing the woman as she came towards him for a kiss.

"The usual," he replied. Running a couple of laundromats wasn't the most exciting job, but in a city as big as this one, the pay was fairly good. As he released Marnie from the hug, he noticed how quickly the woman had changed the subject... Normally, she would go into detail about the purchases she made. Curious, York decided to steer the conversation back to Marnie's shopping spree. "So, what'd you get?" he asked, genuine interest in his voice.

Marnie blinked quickly and blanched. "Erm... Some shoes," she said, walking into the kitchen quickly.

"Are you hungry?"

York blinked as his wife left him standing alone in the front room, confused. Marnie was acting so strange... So distant! Had he done something wrong?

"Marnie!" York called, following his wife into the kitchen. "Are you upset with me? Did I forget something?" he asked, worried. He was certain that her birthday wasn't for another three months, and both their anniversary and Valentine's Day had already passed. "Talk to me, honey," he requested, words he had always said whenever a disagreement in the relationship came to an uncomfortable silence.

She gulped. better to just tell him now... She turned around slowly to face her handsome handsome. She kept her eyes trained on the floor and gave a shaky sigh.

"York..." She said slowly. "I... I went over my budget by three hundred!" She blurted suddenly.

York was suddenly hit by a mix of emotions. It was a great relief to hear that he had done nothing wrong, yet it was also very surprising to hear that Marnie had overstepped her budget... Four times over!

"400 dollars?" he asked, his tone lacking any clear emotion. It was clear that he was deep in thought.

$400 dollars THAT much. Financially, they could manage it without much consequence. Still, the fact that she had knowingly gone over the limit despite agreeing on the amount she was to spend upset York.

"W-what did you buy exactly?" he asked. His voice was still controlled, although a bit lower in pitch than usual.

Marnie quickly ran her fingers through her short blonde hair. "Eh, expensive shoes and clothes," she said, her own voice going up an octave.

"Well, did you at least get your money's worth?" York demanded, clearly trying not to show that he was upset by Marnie's revelation. Before his wife even had a chance to answer this, he asked another question. "I mean... Didn't we agree that you were only going to spend 100 dollars? You've never gone over your limit before..."

He gave his wife a rather hard look.

"Marnie! I'm... I'm disappointed with you..." he muttered. It felt very strange to speak to his wife in such a way, but then again, he saw no reason in hiding how he really felt.
