Using Linux/WINE for RPGs (HELP)
I installed Linux Mint 18.3 on my computer a few days ago. I installed WINE to run the RPGs from this site. The games do work ( Diary of A Slave, Brats of the Wild II, The Passage), however, the screen is completely black when running those programs. Do any of you know how to fix this?
Also, when I tried to run SpanQuest DX with the Wine app, I got an error message:

Wow, I can help here! Mint user too! Penguins help each other!
So... with games done with RPG Maker MV ( Diary of A Slave, Brats of the Wild II, The Passage for example, aka the recent ones) you don't have to use wine... just open the index.html file in the "www " folder with Firefox (only firefox work). The game should start normally, just in a browser (and with big screen too!).
Be sure to DISABLE " Lighting effects" in the main menu BEFORE starting the game to prevent annoying lag during cutscenes ( Brat of the Wild II, Spanquest II for example) and just enable " always dash" because time is money (you do not need "always dash" for running the game, it's just a tip)
Credits to t_rugen for the lighting effects tip (even if it was general and not linux oriented, it helped a lot)! If I hadn't thanked you before, thank you now!
For Spanquest DX I posted the solution on that thread

BTW, if some people here are penguins like me (read: use Linux) or if you love apples like Snow White (read: use MacOs) I found that the game works with wine development (3.4 now, 3.3 yesterday) https://wiki.winehq.org/Download .
Old RPG Maker XP games like this one didn't work with earlier versions of wine (only the ancient ones, like 1.4). I'ts easy, just follow the installation and launch the game with wine (from the terminal for example "wine Game.exe").

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!
P.S.: RPG Maker MV can port games to Linux! Think about us devs!

You'd be best off trying to run them in the Firefox browser, which you should be able to do with the .html file in the game folder. I can't help you at all with WINE. Remember,
it's a program that tries to play as if it is Windows by servicing some windows DLLS and interrupts. It's never been 100 percent compatible.

You might want to try disabling the lighting effects (in either the brower or exe version) if you can get to the settings, I think that has helped some people getting them to run.

Thanks a bunch. I opened the index.html with Firefox, and it worked successfully, however, I cannot load my saved files.
As for SQDX, I installed Wine 3.4 and it worked! Thanks. I previously had the current stable version (3.0). I had no idea that a developer version would work, especially when the stable one wouldn't. Weird.

My understanding of WINE history is that it has taken a very long time to develop so it makes sense its developers versions would be pretty major 'upgrades' by normal standards...
Oh, wow. Look at this from Wikipedia:
4 July 1993; 24 years ago Stable release 3.0 / January 18, 2018; 57 days ago [1]
Preview release 3.4 / March 16, 2018; 0 days ago [1]
So yeah, it's old BUT they went through 4 developer editions in 57 days. I was thinking years between developer editions...I wonder what has put the SPEED in their SPROCKET all of a sudden?

I'm glad you got it working with WINE. I had forgotten that while you can play it in a browser, you need to be willing to keep it open until you are done with it (lucky there aren't many ways to 'lose') because the browser option doesn't save to HTML.
Anyway, I have dual boot on most of my computers, I just don't use Linux for much gaming. But if I do put it in Mint I will be sure to try to install Wine 3.4 first.

About saving while playing in the browser, I believe the saves are in the cache or similar: if you close the browser you do not lose the saved progress, you should be able to load them from the menu. You can't see them but they are there.
And no, you can't load the file saves with the game in the browser sorry.
I believe you can find more info there.
About wine, for what I know the developer edition (aka wine 3.4 for now) it's just an updated version of wine: new features but not tested enough to be released as "stable".
That's why you don't have it in the official ubuntu/mint/debian repositories (those are distributions that have to be really stable and problem-free since they target non-techinical users and servers).
About how quickly they release wine version, the official 2.0 was released just last year!

Well, I'm a linux gamer. Yeah, there are LOTS of games for Linux on Steam and Gog.
I could talk about linux gaming for hours... just check the games for "SteamOS" on Steam, it's quicker for both of us (me writing, you reading).
Just to make an example, I'm watching a livestream of Saints Row 3 played on Linux.
Be sure to check gamingonlinux.com to get all the news (tons of them every day) and the fun (livestreams, forum etc).

It will be great if you could export BOTW2 to Linux too, I'm curious if the dreaded lighting effects are still a problem or not.
Was the Linux port easy to make?
Please spread the word to the fellow AnimeOTK game designers, if the Linux version is just some clicks away why don't port it?
