How long had it been? At least a few weeks… Or months… He did not really know how much time, but what Qrow did know was that he was getting tired of following these kids and making sure from afar that they were safe. Back then, he should have figured out it would take this long for them to reach Mistral. Anima was one hell of a big continent after all.

As these moments flashed through his mind, he remembered that scorpion Faunus who had attacked Team RNJR. Just thinking about it made the blood boil under his skin. He had managed to arrive just in time to save Ruby from that stinger, but it had been a very close hit. The huntsman’s gaze unconsciously wandered to Ruby around the bonfire in the present time as he took another sip from his flask, his look sterner than he intended it to be. He could feel the others’ – Jaune, Nora and Ren – faces stopping on him, but he did not care at that moment. “Should I…?” The man wondered, drinking again. Albeit rarely, Qrow had indeed punished both his nieces in the past. He liked thinking of himself as a carefree individual and liked giving both Ruby and Yang freedom to do as they pleased, unlike their overprotective father, Taiyang, but this time she had overdone it. Running away like she did had been bad, but Qrow would’ve let it go with a lecture and a smack on the head.

The way she repeatedly kept jumping into that fight even after he’d asked her multiple times to stay away, however… As it flashed through his mind, Qrow didn’t even realise as his eyes narrowed a bit and his grip on the flask tightened. “Yes, I definitely should.” Taking a longer sip than before as he felt his anger rising, he didn't seem to noticed the way his fingers were slowly sinking into the surface of his flask, though the kids around him certainly did. His unusually stern look, he noticed, had not left Ruby’s face even for a split second during the time he spent thinking about it. “Ruby…” Just like his look, Qrow’s voice was not as light-hearted as usual. It did not have the funny or carefree hint it usually had when he was talking to her or Yang.

“You know… I…” Know I don’t like to do that. He thought, but stopped before saying it. It made him fell stupid. “Oh, hell, let’s just get this over with. You know you messed up big deal this time, so I can’t simply let it go as I usually would.” For the first time in the last couple of minutes, his look left Ruby’s face, though any relief she might have felt from that would be short-lived as he looked around until he found a tree which satisfied him. “See that tree right there?” Pointing it with his finger, Qrow turned his face to Ruby again.

“Ruby.” Qrow had not spanked Ruby in a while, and her father probably hadn’t either, but even if she had not figured out what he was planning to do by then, with that she would. “Walk up there, cut a switch from that tree and bring it to me.”

After one last, long sip, he finally put the flask down, unaware of the finger-shaped dents he’d left all over it.

The mood was tense, Ruby would be able to cut it with her scythe if she tried. Her uncle was far from happy with her and it showed, he wasn’t a naturally stern person, so this made this whole situation even scarier. “So…” The young teenager wasn’t sure what to say or how to behave, she had never been in trouble with her uncle Qrow for almost getting herself hurt – or killed! – before. Yang had, but that had been many years ago and if her memory served her right, her older sister had ended up in a damn lot of trouble!

She was twirling her thumbs now and tried to avoid his gaze, she tried to look everywhere but him. Ruby did understand that she had messed up, that she had disobeyed her uncle, but what she didn’t actually understood was just how dangerous that had been! The short girl glanced over her shoulder, silently asking the remaining members of Team JNPR for help, but all three of them shook their heads. Their was nothing they could do to help the younger girl, and it was not like they wanted Qrow to be angry with them as well. Nora was poking the fire with a stick, Ren watched her and Jeanne was giving her a pitiful look.

“Uncle Qrow…” Ruby took a deep breath, though she still wasn’t sure what she should say. “I’m sorry for what I did…” She said quietly, but the moment he pointed at a nearby tree, the young girl tensed in shock. He wouldn’t, would he? No way… right? But when she realized the older man was anything but joking, her eyes widened in shock and fear. “B-but! But! Uncle Qrow! I’m too old to get spanked by you!!” She tried to argue, even using her arms to emphasise her point. “You haven’t spanked me in years and I’m sorry about this, I really am!” Her uncle’s strict tone didn’t leave any room for further arguments though, she flinched at the sharp tone when he ordered her to get a switch now and Ruby looked almost as if she was already close to crying. Sure, Ruby was quite fearless when she had to fight monsters or enemies, but a spanking was a complete different story.

“I-I understand…” She choked back a tiny sob, took her weapon and went over to the tree to cut herself a switch. Unlike her sister, Ruby hadn’t been switched a lot, she barely remembered the last time it happened. But seeing Yang’s punishments made it obvious that it was painful and that she’d feel it for days to come.

When she came back, she was carrying a long, slender yet thick enough switch and with shaking hands she handed it over. Before she could say anything else, Nora spoke up.

“If you want we can turn around. You know… to give you at leaset a little bit of privacy?” The usually so cheerful girl said and Ruby nodded softly, she was thankful for her friends. So after the three turned around she looked back at her uncle trying to mentally prepare herself for what was yet to happen.

She trying to convince him to give up was expected, but it didn’t make it any easier for him. Qrow was not a strict person, and he liked having a cool relationship with both Ruby and Yang. Every time they tried to beg their way out of it in the rare occasions they got in trouble with him, he had to force himself to go through with it. Sometimes it even worked and he gave up, but not this time. So as Ruby tried to convince him that she was too old for that, Qrow limited himself to crossing his arms and shaking his head negatively. Then the fact that he hadn’t spanked her in a long time came up. It was true, even when she messed up during that time he would either let Tai deal with it or simply ground her. “That’s right, time and time again I let you convince me to give up, and maybe it was a mistake. That changes now.”

As much as he wanted to avoid looking into Ruby’s eyes once he had ordered her to go, he didn’t. She seemed ready to start crying, and even if it was hard for him to keep a stern face seeing her like that, Qrow wanted his niece to know this time he was indeed determined to go on. It became easier after a few seconds, and he felt both relief and satisfaction wash over him once Ruby hesitantly said she understood and turned around to walk away.

Even then with his newfound determination to go through with this Qrow did feel a bit bad for the entire situation since he was not really used to spanking Ruby. Maybe an explanation would make it easier for both of them. “Look kiddo, you know I usually would let it go. However… Running away… That alone is bad, but I wouldn’t punish you for it.” He said, raising a bit his voice to be heard as Ruby approached the tree. “Almost getting yourself… Yourselves killed numerous times for being stupid? Sure, you are huntsmen and huntresses in training, danger comes with the job description and doing stupid things is part of being a kid. Big deal.”

“Jumping into a fight against a much stronger enemy even with me telling you a lot of times to stay back? Alright, I’d probably lecture and maybe have you grounded for a few days.” When she prepared to cut a switch, Qrow rolled his eyes. “You wish. Not that one, kiddo. A little to the right. Higher. The other one. Yeah, that one.” Once he was finished instructing her to cut a switch of which length and thickness he considered satisfying, Qrow sighed and shook his head. He waited for Ruby to come close, then spoke again just as she handed him the switch. “As I was saying, any of these things I listed would be bad, but alone wouldn’t be enough for me to spank you. But all three of them together?” Taking the switch from her hands, Qrow did his best to pretend he hadn’t noticed his niece’s hands shaking. He took a few practice swings on the empty space in front of him and nodded at the satisfying Swiiish it made every time it cut through the air.

Qrow was a bit surprised at the offer Nora made to Ruby, and even as he tried to keep a strict exterior, the huntsman was not able hold back a small smile. “Right, thank you very much. And if anyone feels like sneaking a peek, just keep in mind that I’m pissed off with everyone to some extent right now, so you might as well be the next.” Despite the playful hint in his voice as he said that, Qrow made it sound serious enough to be considered a warning. Whilst until then he had not really thought about her friends watching it, Qrow decided his current task was hard enough for both him and Ruby without people seeing it.

“Okay, kid-… Ruby.” It sounded weird, but Qrow decided calling her by name would be better given the situation. He put the switch down next to his flask and adjusted himself on the tree trunk he was sitting on. “I will not start with the switch, but you will be getting it later on. But for now… you know what to do, just get over my lap and let’s get this over with.”

“But uncle Qrow, I really learned my lesson! I know it was stupid and reckless, and yes, maybe I shouldn’t have ran away in the first place, but please don’t switch me!” After handing Qrow the switch, she covered her rear with both her hands as if she was able to protect herself from getting smacked. To make things worse, her uncle had even made her cut an even thicker and more painful looking switch than she would’ve chosen. On the other hand, Ruby should consider herself lucky that it was her uncle and not her father disciplining her, Taiyang probably would’ve been a lot more upset with her. Ruby was also missing another point, it was not like Qrow was actually able to ground her right now, they were in the open after all.

When he tested the switch, Ruby flinched visibly. The way the slender yet sturdy branch was cutting through the air promised a painful spanking and the young teenager was clearly not looking forward to it. She looked at her friends again who were looking at anything in the distance and it was obvious that none of them even thought about messing with Qrow right now. He was right after all, the three of them were lucky to not get switched as well. Ruby was sure that Glynda would’ve beaten all their butts for a stunt like that.

If she took too long he would simply flip her over his knees himself, but it probably would not come to that. Once Ruby finally started moving and slowly placed herself across his lap, Qrow closed his eyes for a few seconds and took a deep breath. Then, when he opened then again, he decided it was about time to stop.

Sighing as he pushed her hands away from the seat of her skirt, he felt a bit nervous when his own hand took their place resting on her bottom. “Don’t make things more difficult, Ruby. “What you think?” He asked back, not really giving Ruby an answer, though it was pretty obvious. For a second he thought about replying to Nora’s question, but decided against it. So rather than giving her or her teammates any clue of what would happen to them, Qrow simply said “You don’t want to know” and stopped talking. He knew they would take a while to reach Haven yet, and letting simply know that something would happen would feel even worse than actually saying what he would do. “Might as well let them build the anticipation”

As the spanking started, Ruby’s painful reactions had him narrow his eyes a bit and start swinging his arm a bit faster every time it came down, which in turn resulted in increasingly harder smacks. He ignored her attempts to convince him to stop, his hand coming down several times in a row.
