Verity could hardly sleep. For days, she'd been keeping track of every movement, every indication that the egg was close to hatching. It had been a gift from her mother: Dawn had taken up Pokemon breeding, and had found an egg from her Empoleon. After some questioning, it was confirmed that the mother had been a Ditto, and that the baby would be a Piplup. The young girl could barely contain her excitement. Soon, she'd begin her life as a trainer, and she'd finally have a chance to experience all of the fantastic adventures that her parents had told her stories of since she could remember. It was going to be amazing.

Dawn crept in to check on her little girl, whom she'd sent to bed an hour ago. Coming to stand at the bedside, she peered back behind the blanket and stifled a sigh.
Of COURSE she wasn't asleep. Who did she think she was fooling with her eyes squeezed shut like that? She looked less like a sleeping girl and more like someone in severe pain.
"Baby, please stop daydreaming, count Mareep and go to sleep." Dawn remembered what a daydreamer she herself had been as a little girl.

Verity opened her eyes and regarded her mother in the darkness. "But, Mama, I can't," she complained. "The egg is moving more and more. What if it hatches while I'm asleep? I'll miss it. And I want to be the first one to meet Piplup. You always like to be there to see your Pokemon's eggs hatch."

Dawn sat at the bedside. How angelic her little girl looked, lying against the white pillow in the moonlight, with her brown eyes wide and her hair loose all around her face.
"If he doesn't hatch until morning time, you'll be too tired to run around with him like you'll want to. If I tell you a story, do you promise you'll try to go to sleep?"

"Well..." She did like stories, even if she would have preferred permission to stay up all night. Her parents had some interesting tales to tell, however, and there seemed to be no end to how many they could come up with. "All right. Is it something about you and Mom?" She hoped so. Stories in which her parents were the heroes were secretly her favorite.

Dawn gave little Veritys ribs a grab. "Fine, I'll tell you yet ANOTHER story about Cynthia and myself when I was . . .still a little girl. I wish Cynthia wouldn't tell you those stories." She made a face. "It feels so weird to think about."

Dawn told her little girl the story of her, Cynthia, Ash and Brock saving the world from Team Galactic. At the end, she wrapped her arms around her and sang to her.

From the corner of her eye, Verity noticed the egg, which had been in a nest of blankets in the corner of her room, start to move wildly. Then, a small crack appeared in the blue shell. "Mama, look!" She bounded off her mother's lap and over to the corner, just in time to see a small blue head poke its way out.
"Lup?"
