I Want To Change (for Bombay)
Lisa Franklin used to be a good kid. She always did everything she was asked to do, volunteered her time to help others, and was very polite. Lisa used to be considered a star student, always going above and beyond for her work. She had pride in it all. She had lots of friends and was kind to everyone. But something changed.
Lisa Franklin is now a trouble maker. She quit all of her clubs and volunteer work, skipped school, and didn't ever do a single assignment. She fought with kids that used to be her friends and argued with teachers. She practically lived in detention was she was at school. But no one could do anything because her parents never answered the phone.
Today was no different. It was the last class of the day and she sat in her seat, feet on the table, and playing games on her phone. The other kids whispered about Lisa's disrespect, but she didn't care

Miss. Fredriksson is usually a passionate, but soft spoken and kind drama teacher. She cares deeply about her students, and knows everyone has the potential to succeed. It’s her job as a teacher to bring that potential out of her students and watch them blossom! Her greatest achievement was Lisa, who showed exponential growth in her class.
First, a girl who was too shy to get in front of the class to say a monologue, grew into the lead of last fall’s school play! It’s enough to make her heart burst with happiness…but that was before Lisa changed. She’s honestly not sure when it happened, but slowly over time, she’s been hearing more reports about the girl, and Lisa was starting to become more and more disrespectful to her.
Today, she had enough and she went over to the girl sitting in the back and whispered “We will be having a conversation after class” before she took the phone with a “yoink”. Walking back to her desk, she continued her lesson until the bell rang “Homework is…oh forget it, no homework tonight!” she giggled watching the students leave.

When the bell rang, Lisa rolled her eyes and got up. She slowly pushed her chair in and pulled out everyone else's chair. She then headed towards the front and snatched her phone right back.
"This is mine. Next time you want my attention, teach something useful" she sneered. She put it in her pocket and crossed her arms in front of her in a defiant and defensive way.
"What do you want to talk to me about?" Lisa asked

She waited for the girl to get her phone, and when she came closer, she put on her ‘serious teacher face’. Glaring at her, she stood up “Everything I teach in this class is useful, perhaps you would be able to apply these skills if you weren’t so concentrated on your phone” she lashed back. “I want to talk about your attitude Lisa. It’s unacceptable, and you’re not only doing it in my class, but in others as well. What happened to the bright eyed and bushy tailed student that sat in the front of the class and would sometimes bring me an apple or stay after class helping another student out? I miss them”

Lisa held her hand up. "First of all, none of this is really important. It is drama class. Like none of these kids are actually going to pursue acting as a career, they just do it to be cute or pick up cute girls. And do you really want to know what happened to the dead Lisa? Because you and none of these other damn adults seemed to care about what goes on in my world. So do you really want to know? Or are you asking a stupid rhetorical question to mimic some stupid ass Shakespeare play?" Lisa snapped. She shoved her pocket into her phone and waited for a lecture on cussing or a chance to leave.

Never has a student been so disrespectful, and it too every ounce of restraint not to grab that brat by the ear and tug her over the desk. Taking a deep breath, she walks on the other side of the desk sitting on it “Tell me, do you act the same way in front of your parents, as you do your friends, as you do your teachers? Last time I checked, basic social skills stem from acting, and you’re lacking Lisa”. Placing a hand on her shoulder, she offered her a gentle smile “I care, so would you please let me in and let me help you? I hurts me when I see such a star student fall so hard. I really want to know, cross my heart, and hope to cry!” she would say ‘die’, but that’s just too morbid!

Lisa scoffed at that last part and looked around the room to focus on anything besides Ms. Fredrickson. "My dad lost his job when before I started behaving like this. At first, nothing changed. But then it all changed. We moved from our beautiful house on Third St. to the apartments. Most of our stuff we had to sell. I lost a lot of things that I liked. But I kept hope. But dad didn't go job hunting. We were just scrounging by on my mom's little salary to pay for the 3 of us. Soon, that made mom angry. They started fighting. They are going to get a divorce. They have both been fighting and trying to find cheap lawyers since. They don't care what I do anymore. I started with bad grades, then rude behavior, and then illegal stuff... a lot of my accessories and makeup are stolen from the mall. They simply don't care. My friends didn't understand. Their parents love each other. They have happy families" Lisa confessed. Tears were welled in her eyes, but she wiped them away angrily. "I want to be good. But it is too late now. I can't change back. I want to change"

Ms. Fredrickson listened to the story without a sound. She knew the girl had difficulties, but what kid doesn’t? What she didn’t expect was for it to be this drastic! Seeing the tears stream down the girl’s face, she pulled the girl in for a hug and gently rubbed the back of her head “Shhhh, there, there Lisa. I wish you told me earlier” she said with the softest tone she could muster up “You can always change dear” she said pulling away only to wipe the tears from her eyes. Turning around, she picked up a sticky note and pen and wrote down her number and address “If you ever need to leave your home, or you need a place to stay, you call me. I don’t care how late it is, or how far away you are, I’ll come pick you up”. Next, she reached into her pocketbook and pulled all the money she had in her wallet, which was 78$, “This is your money, don’t let your parents know about it. Also, If you’d like, I can speak to your parents about adoption, but I understand if I’m moving a bit too fast”

Lisa put the money on the desk. "I-I can't take that, Ms. Fredrickson. Not after all the mean and rude things I've done to you lately. And I love my parents, I can't leave them. Maybe they will notice me when it all dies down. Or maybe they are ignoring me because I was bad" Lisa said. She sniffled and wiped her eyes. "Do you really think I can change back?" She asked

“You’re taking this money whether you like it or not little lady” she scolded before a quiet chuckle escapes the teacher’s lips “Please, do you know how many students are mean or rude to me on a daily basis? You’re not the first, and you sure as heck won’t be the last!”. Nodding her head, she slowly stood “I understand, and I won’t press, but still take my number in case you need to get away from the chaos or things get violent”. Placing one hand on her shoulder, she explained, “I do, but it needs to come with commitment and discipline. Do you know what corporal punishment is, or rather, what spanking is?”
