A Second Chance (for shadowsong2b)

[Terra]

Amber René was a homeless girl who had recently turned 19. She usually slept where she could and ate at a local place that gave her the occasional sandwich in exchange for cleaning things. However, she was also a pickpocket and a thief, but she only took just enough to survive. She had recently been breaking in to houses when no one was home just to sleep somewhere inside. But things were about to change for her.

Amber had been looking at a house for the past week and finally decided to go in. After unlocking a door with her lockpicking skills, she slid in and found a bed. But once she thought she was safe for the night, the owner of the house caught her and told her to explain herself. Whimpering and nervous, the girl spoke with a shaky voice.

“I’m sorry. I’ve been on my own since I was 14 when my parents died and spent the next few years in foster care, dropping out of school because I couldn’t focus. Once I turned 18, they kicked me out and I’ve been on my own for the past year since.” Amber explained with a shudder from knowing she could go to prison for this. “I just wanted a place to sleep. That’s all. I wasn’t going to take or break anything.”

The man who had caught her, by all odds, was a police officer, Mike Fisher. He was a tall man, easily six feet three, with close cropped brown hair, his arms were large and his hands were fairly big, there was a scar over his left eye but what shocked everyone was his dark blue eye's. which contrasted his tan skin. when he had heard the door open he'd been in his office, and even though he'd had a weapon drawn when he first caught eye's on the young girl he'd lowered it almost right away. he shook his head as she begged him.

he sighed "How old are you?" He asked, looking her in the eye's.

Amber fidgeted and bit her lip. “I just turned 19.” She said gingerly, her body lightly shivering from nerves. While she wasn’t deathly afraid or panicked, she was still nervous. And not only that, but regretting her actions. Desperation can be quite dangerous and she was starting to realize how much more screwed she could’ve been.

"you look like your under 15." Mike commented looking her over. then he turned and went to the fridge, pulling out materials for a sandwich. making one and offering it to Amber.

[Terra]

Amber blushed, not knowing how to take that comment. As she saw him walking away, she did contemplate running, but decided not to. When the sandwich was offered to her, she hesitated from the surprise. A moment later, she accepted it. “Th-thank you.” She said with a sincere gasp as she took a bite. She teared up from the kind gesture and happily ate the sandwich, it being the first thing she ate in a couple days that wasn’t a leftover.

Mike nodded, looking the poor girl over. being a Cop, he knew the failings of the Foster care system. a system which he thought was broken to the point it wasn't even worth trying to rebuild, he thought they needed to completely start over. in the course of his work he would see the foster child go two ways most times, either into the Military, or the Criminal Justice system. Well it seemed like this girl might be sort of in the middle, (though admittedly breaking and entering pushed more twords the latter option) she didn't seem like the kind of person to give up on...

"What's your name again?" He asked her.

[Terra]

Amber blinked and finished swallowing a bite of her sandwich. “It’s Amber René….I don’t remember what my last name was supposed to be.” She said softly, taking another bite and fidgeting nervously. If one looked closely, they could see a small tear roll down her face as she mentioned her lack of a last name. It had been quite some time since Amber even thought she was in a family.

Mike nodded. his mind racing, "Alright. I've made a few choices. Firstly I'm not going to call the police." he said.

[Terra]

Amber blinked, looking up at him and tilting her head. That sounded like a relief to her, but she decided not to say anything until Mike was finished speaking. She fidgeted lightly from nerves, taking another bite of her sandwich.

Mike saw her mind going, "Secondly, I would like to offer you a deal." He said, thinking about how exactly to word it.
