The Chivalry Code
Knighting was the best thing that could happen to a man that had once been a peasant. But it wasn't easy, he had to prove his worth as a fighter and as a tactician and he had to be accepted by His and Her Majesty.
Knights usually took a squire as their apprentice in their third year of service. Being the son of a blacksmith, Richard thought he had a good chance of being chosen as an esquire to a Red Knight, one of the toughest warriors in service to the King.
Being twelve years old, Richard stood tall for his age, though he was still smaller than his thirteen-year-old sister. He had brown hair that looked more red in the sunlight and rather dark eyes.

"Too skinney, to sickley, not all theat bright *kabang* apparently" thought Foust as he walked down the main road.
Foust was a Colored Knight under the service of the King. He'd been in service for the past 10 years, he was 22. Foust stood tall and normally had a puzzeling look on his face. He had shiney silver hair and deep green eyes.
Many of the peasants moved out of his way when they saw his armor, and many stood in awe as they saw the color of his crest. He was a Blue Knight. The king had five levels of knights. The lowest on the chain was the basic Grey Knight, the infantry. Next up came the Green Knights, the great archers of the kingdom. Mid-way up came the mighty Red Knights, they were usually the ones to take on squires and were monsters on the battle field with un-surpassed strength and tactic. Second to top was the Blue Knights, they rarely ever took on squires for the fact that their art and style of fighting was so complex and mysterious, that most couldn't understand. And top was the Gold or Silver Knight (depending on who they guarded), royal guard for the king and queen.
Foust was about to give up his search for a boy when his eyes suddenly fell on a boy working with a blacksmith.
"Well, what have we here" said Foust as he approached the stand "Any good weapons for a knight of his majesty?"

Richard's father, Robert (or Rob), was a bit startled to see Blue Knight asking about his blades. He immediately bowed to the man and elbowed his son to it as well when the boy stood rather stupefied.
Wiping his hands on a greying rag, he approached the silver-haired Knight, abandoning the sword he had been working on.
"Well, sir, what I have here right now are rather nice blades, a few scimitars and a double handed claymore. For people of your status, sir, we usually take orders and work our hardest on those." He smiled at his prospective costumer.
"Have you heard of a Damascus Blade? Hardest steel there is, impossible to break save with very strong magic. We could make one for you sir, though it would take some time."
Richard, for his part, ignored his father's sales pitch and stared at the Knight in a way that some people would have found prying. He had always dreamt of leaving his father's boring blacksmith business and becoming and Knight and here was his opportunity! All he had to two was to politely ask the man if he needed a squire when his dad finally shut up.
Richard was vaguely aware that Blue Knights were of higher order than the Red ones, since his parents didn't exactly rub elbows with the high society.

Foust was completely zoned in on the boy with his periferrial vision. He didn't hear a single word that came out of the mans mouth, other than the Damask Blade, to which he responded "I've shattered a few of those, not many, but a few"
Foust zoned out again after that. He started to read the boys aura, it was strong and bright. Foust started to smile as he realised that he had found his squire. He then looked down at the boy and said "You make swords, do you know how to use one?"

Rob felt a bit peeved at being ignored, but he couldn't do anything about it due to the man's status. He stood idly waited for an answer for a moment, and when none came, he said that he would be ironworking if anybody needed him and went back to his work.
Rob was not what you would call the brightest bulb in the lot, but he was a kind man. He loved his wife and children dearly and honestly. When he was a young lad he had dreamt of being a Knight, but had always known he wasn't up to par for it. But maybe his lad Richard was.
Said boy, for his part, stood with his mouth open without being able to answer. He felt stupid and knew he was making a bad impression on the Knight, but he couldn't help being awed by him. There was certain air that he had that somehow made him important.
Finally he swallowed and answered. "Well, uh....a little sir, nothing too fancy...eh?"

"I'll take that as a yes" said the knight with a grin "here's my sword, and I'll take this one". Foust drew a long fine silver blade with ancient runes and handed it to Richard. He then picked up one of the lesser welded blades from the counter and motioned for Richard to come around.
"Lets fight, I won't be fancy if you won't" said the knight as he redied his blade.
The knight looked like his was kidding, but anyone around could have told you that the air was thick with a grim sense of reality.

Richard took the long-handed blade, rather alarmed by the turn of events. He turned to look at his father, who tried to look encouraging, but he looked worried as well. As consolation, Richard knew that his father would try to stop the fight if he was in true danger, even if he got arrested for it.
He had sometimes practised with sticks when he was playing with his friends, but the proportions and weight of the blade were extremely different.
Richard looked at his opponent. Suppose he went for a real fight and it turned out that the Knight was just kidding? Suppose he hurt him? He would get in trouble!
But then again, this was his chance to shine, to show this Knight he could make a good squire.
Concentrating, he swung the blade with full force towards Foust's armoured side. If he hit, at least the armour would protect the Knight.

Foust observed the child take the blade and draw back from the weight. But he soon gained his balance and took a great swing at his side.
"Impressive" said Foust as he jammed his sword in the ground on the side of the swing, catching the blade. "But theres more to me than meets the eye".
Foust put both of his hands together and muttered a word or two under hist breath. He then thrust his hands tward Richard as a large glowing orb came out of them. It hit Richard like a punch in the chest and sent him flying back.
"Now do you understand how I fight?" he asked as he looked at the child "I can teach you how to do SO much more than that, if you think you are willing"
Foust smiled and offered a hand to help the boy up

Richard knew the man was doing magic the moment he put his hands together. He had seen a woman do something similar when there had been a fire near their village and she helped put it out. He didn't expect however, that the magic would be used against him!
Once it sent him flying off his feet, he realised it was pretty obvious: magic could be a weapon too. Just like a knife: you could use it to cut carrots or stab someone. That's what his mom taught him.
He was pulled out of his thoughts by his opponent.
"Now do you understand how I fight?" he asked as he looked at the child "I can teach you how to do SO much more than that, if you think you are willing."
Richard accepted the hand with a face of shock which quickly turned into a awed smile. He looked at his father, who had thrown down his work when he saw him flying.
When Rob understood that his son was being offered to be a squire, with a proud and nostalgic sigh, he nodded.
Richard almost hugged Foust. "Yes, sir! I would like to train under you a lot!"

"Haha! I finally found one! I was afraid that I'd never find a suitable squire and the I saw you" said Foust as he dusted the boy off a bit "I see good things happening with you in the near future"
Foust picked up his sword and put it back by his side before walking over to Rob and extending a hand to shake. "Congradulations, you son has been excepted as my squire and will be moved up greatly in social class. You buiseness ought to go up well too" he said with a smile.
"So, shall we go back to the castle and get you registered as my squire" as Foust as he motioned for Richard to follow.
