2 weeks. It has only been two short weeks since an Android nanny named Kara snapped and broke free from her programming and saved a girl from her abusive father. At the time, the girl, named Alice, felt herself become overjoyed for the first time in a long time. She let the machine hold her in her arms and hold her hand as they walked for hours to a destination that she think Kara doesn't even know exactly. Sometimes, Alice could hear a voice in her head telling her not to trust the Android, but the girl quickly pushed away these thoughts. But as the days went by, the girl was very much getting tired of sleeping in cold alleyways and having very little to eat and drink. She knows she much rather prefers this to her actual home life, but that doesn't mean it's not a hard life to live still.

One night, Alice and Kara were continuously walking along the same path they've been walking on for weeks. The only life forms they would occasionally come across were stray animals and Androids going menial tasks for their owners, though they never much payed them much mind. But as they were walking, Alice suddenly stopped and stared at the ground silently. She waited a few seconds before she finally opened her mouth. "Kara, my feet hurt... can we please rest?" She whined, now looking up at her with pleading eyes.

Looking back, Kara wasn't sure how she had stood it. The abuses of her owner. The constant yelling and ordering and insulting. The thrashings he was so fond of giving out. She didn't know how she had put up with it all. But now... now things were different. She was free. Alice was free. Even if they weren't comfortable, even if Alice was cold and tired, she was sure that this would turn out for the better.

As Alice stopped, Kara turned around. "Alice, I know your feet hurt, but we just have a little ways more to go, okay sweetie? Then we'll find a nice warm room, and everything will be alright." She offered her a weak smile, hoping that would be enough to get her to keep going. She had been through far more than a child her age should. Kara hoped that she could go just a little further.

Alice bit her lip as she was asked to keep going. It wasn’t fair! Kara was a super tough Android that didn’t have to deal with getting tired, hungry or getting sore. Right now, Alice was all of those things. She looked around slowly, there was no place to sit or rest anyways so maybe Kara had the right idea.

But in the distance she noticed a local drug store with a homeless Android sitting outside with a sign. The store had a poster in the window that advertised a new chocolate bar that “will make you mouth explode!” The picture alone made her mouth water and her stomach rumble. She turned to her caretaker and pulled on her sleeve.

“Can we stop there, Kara?” She asked, pointing her finger at the store.

Kara looked up at the store, scrutinizing it. "Alright, Kara, we can stop for a little while. But not for too long." She took Alice's hand, and led her toward the building. She cast a forlorn gaze at the homeless Android sitting outside, but decided it best not to interact with them. Best not to associate herself with other Androids any more than necessary.

A chime sounded as the two stepped inside, and Kara held onto Alice as they made their way through the aisles. "What do you want to eat, Alice?" Kara knew that she was hungry, but she also wanted to make sure that their small amount of money would last them long enough to reach safety.

Alice smiled slightly as the nanny android agreed to let them stop, pulling her softly toward the direction of the store. The girl looked around the aisles filled with goodies and candies, glancing mindlessly at them before she paused. "Here it is!" She smiled as she picked up the advertised candy bar and turned around to show Kara. "I want this one." She proclaimed. It was pretty expensive for just a candy bar but Alice didn't see a problem as she was blinded by her hunger.

Kara saw the candy bar that Alice wanted, and could tell why the girl would want it. It did look like it would be tasty. But it also looked like it would cost the same as three days supply of real food. Kara hated having to stomp on Alice's dreams, but they needed the money more than the chocolate. "What about this instead, Alice?" She pulled a package of crackers off of the shelf. Alice usually liked them well enough, so she hoped she would accept the substitution.

Alice frowned as Kara suggested a package of presumably dry crackers, shaking her head almost immediately. “No, I want this one.” The girl explained, using one hand to push the android’s cracker filled hand out of the way so Kara could fully examine the candy bar. “Please?” Alice stuck out her bottom lip and made it quiver.

Kara sighed. This wasn't going to be easy. "Alice, honey, I know you want that one, but we don't have enough money for it right now. I promise you that as soon as we have enough, I'll get you one, but right now we need to buy the crackers, okay?" She smiled, hoping that would make her a bit more compliant. The bottom lip usually worked wonders on the android, but Kara resisted.

Alice groaned and stomped her tiny foot in frustration at yet another denial by the android care taker. With an audible huff, she turned around and pretended to put the candy back but hid close to her body as she crossed her arms. As she waited for Kara to turn away, she quickly put it in her inside jacket pocket before following Kara to avoid raising suspicions.

Kara closed her eyes, wishing that Alice could understand. But she didn't. Taking her by the hand, the led them both to the counter and put the crackers on the counter. After finishing the purchase, she led them outside. "Now, do you want to eat the crackers now, or save them for later?" She felt like she already knew the answer to that question.
