Skyrim: A Legionnaire's Charge (Fenrir13)
Castle Dour was the headquarters of the Imperial Legion in Skyrim. It was a towering fortress with several floors, but only the bottom few were occupied. Upstairs was the private quarters of Legate Rikke, one of the top commanders in the Legion. She'd lived there since the war with the Stormcloaks began, alone except for the Thalmor soldiers who occasionally convened on the top floor, until a few years ago, when she'd unexpectedly taken in an Altmer child, Eir, whose parents had been killed in the war. Those past few years had been spent looking after the girl and training her to join the Legion when she came of age. The two got on well, but the Legate's sternness and her ward's mischievousness sometimes did not mix well.

Rikke was teaching the child the ways of the legion and espacially the sword and shield fighting style that was the backbone of their army. Eir did reasonably well, but the hardy Nord woman pushed her always, to the point of not always being fair. "Come on Eir, a Nord child could block this move if he or she was only half your age!", she said sternly and moved on, driving the Altmer into a corner of the courtyard they were training in, sword and shield raised for a savage combination of thrust, really laying her weight into the attack to drive the girl further into the corner if she did not surrender. And surrender was never an option in Rikkes book!

"I'm trying! But I never even had a chance to get into the right stance before you starting swinging at me!"
Even though she was young, Eir didn't consider surrender an option any more than Rikke did. Children born from marriages between humans and elves were always technically fully elven, and Eir was Altmer in everything but name, but the girl had inherited a fair bit of stubbornness from her Nord father. That said, she didn't have the physical strength of a Nord. Rikke's attacks were overpowering her, pushing her back further and further. That called for evening the playing field a little...
She continued to ward off the blows, but opted to drop the sword in her right hand entirely, instead charging a weak frost spell. It wouldn't be enough to really hurt Rikke (aside from a little pain from the ice on her skin.) The next time the Legionnaire tried to strike, she cast the spell in her direction, hoping to catch her off-guard or slow her down enough that she could get into a position to fight back.

"Do you think your enemies will wait for you to be on guard?", Rikke said shaking her head slightly. She liked the girls stubborness, it was a good quality for a warrior. But unfortunately she had trouble building up the muscle. Magic came much more naturally...speaking of which! Rikke was caught off guard by the spell and stumbled a bit backwards, alltough she had managed to block the icy blast with her shield. "Whoa, a bit overeager arenīt we princess?", she said, lowering her guard, a good indication that they would have a break, alltough considering the womans words earlier, Eir might use it for a strike. "I donīt know if I should commend or spank you, considering this is really not a magic lesson. But I like you doing something I didnīt expect.", she sort of half heartily praised.

"Ugh!" Eir put her shield down, following Rikke's example. She did need a break, and she didn't think her mentor was serious about actually punishing her for that. "I mean, no, I don't think a real enemy would wait for me to get into a proper stance. But if I were fighting a real enemy and I knew I couldn't beat them with weapons, I would have to use magic, so I think there's a little problem with your logic..." A slight look from Rikke told her it was a better idea to shut up before she said something she'd regret. Getting punished was not on her list of things to do that day, and moreover she didn't want to disrespect her guardian too much. "Sorry. Can we have lunch though? It feels like we've been training forever. I can help you cook. Or we can go to the tavern?"

Rikke chuckled at the girl questioning her logic and shrugged. "If you think thats going to help you. But I canīt teach you magic so its better to focus on your sword skills.", she said. She was quite fond of Eir and didnīt hide the fact, yet she was also a strict teacher. So whenever the elf girl stood up to her she considered it pretty ballsy and didnīt mind as long as it didnīt get annoying over time.
Rikke never punished over small things. "Yeah, sure. Wait letīs check...", the Nord woman told the girl and checked her purse. Sadly there wasnīt much coin left. "Hmph, seems like we have just enough to buy ingredients for a simple stew. Sorry kid.", she said and got closer, ruffling the girls hair affectionately.

"Stew again? I'm so tired of stew. We have it all the time. But... I like it better than being hungry, I guess..." The girl was disappointed, but she knew Rikke didn't get much on her soldier's salary, so she didn't complain too strongly. Her face brightened a little when her mentor ruffled her hair. "But maybe someday I'll figure out how to enchant weapons. Then we can sell them and make a ton of money. And we can eat moon sugar fondue like the rich people. I'll also enchant my sword and shield so I finally have an advantage over you, Rikke," she teased.

"I know...its my fault for having the guys invite me to drinking.", Rikke grumbled, only feeling a bit better as she saw her charges face brightening when she ruffled her hair. "That would be great. Are you sure you can pull that of?", the woman asked, quite impressed. She knew next to nothing about the magic arts, just the soldiers life.

"Not really," Eir admitted. "I never tried before, and we don't have any enchanting supplies. You need soul gems, which are expensive. And you have to know the specific enchantment. Or at least, that's what I read." Aside from her mother, Eir hadn't met many mages, and she had no formal instruction in magic. Most of her knowledge came from books, which she sometimes persuaded Rikke into buying. "But really good wizards can put an enchantment on anything, even a normal pair of gloves." She dusted herself off. "Can we go get the ingredients?"

Rikke listened to her explanation and then laid an arm around the girls shoulders in a friendly way. "Of course. Letīs go to the market.", she said smiling lightly and lead her to it. It took some time to find the herbs, vegetables and bacon they needed for a simple yet filling stew, but it was fun browsing all the stands.
