The girl stayed behind this time, likely spreading the story of what had occured among the villagers. The priest went along, trying to calm everyone and insure them that this was only a brief episode and normalcy would return as soon as the totem was recovered, which surely would only take a short while.
In the meantime Adan watched the cliffside hideout, after ending his philosophical musings. There seemed to be no sign of activity, no guard and no patrols. Alltough maybe the goblins were preparing an ambush for him inside? What did they want the totem for in the first place? Was this some kinda twisted trophy? One thing was certain, they needed to be wiped out, or at least punished harshly for their raid, else the so peaceful island soon would have a major problem, if the stories of goblins spreading fast proved to be true. But so far everything was eerily quiet, only the roar of the waves and a sea gull or two could be heard.

Watching the only entrance to the cliffside he could find, he couldn't see any guards posted. The way goblins had set up their camp was definitely very different than how a group of humans would have done. But, he supposed the lack of lookouts would play to his advantage. He could get up on the camp without being seen. He wished he'd brought along his bow, to see if he could get the angle for a few pot shots. But, he wasn't equipped for that. So, keeping himself low, and trying to stay out of the line of sight from the direction that would be visible from the entrance, he crept on toward the hideout. Moving slow, measuring his foot-falls, and keeping his ears sharp, he planned to move in as closely as he could. Either until he was spotted, or, more hopefully, until he spotted the goblins.

At the entrance of the caves it became rather shadowy, but in some distance the goblins had set up torches, rather cunningly to lure him into an ambush. Some goblins would shoot arrows as soon as he entered, but would quickly be chided by their comrades, who feared that might scare him off while they wanted him deeper into the caves, for the big ambush from several directions. They had short bows and arrowheads made of stone and pikes with fire hardened tips. Not good but good enough to run someone threw. Overall their were about twelve male goblins in fighting shape and about half of them would throw themselves at Adan at the same time, the others either held their positions or were deeper in the hive.

When he spied the torches in the distance he knew that was a double edged sword. Goblins had better night vision than humans, from living in caves. So even though he could see them better in the firelight, he knew it would also serve as a beacon for them, to be able to attack him. Not that he had to wait, anyway, as the arrows clacked off the rocks nearby. Shit. He was a sitting duck here, backlit by the opening of the cave. And when he saw them rushing toward him, more goblins than he wanted to take the time to count at first notice, he knew he was going to have to change his tactics. And so, he ran. He wasn't fleeing all the way back to the village, he just wanted to fight the goblins one at a time, so he was going to have to lead them on a chase until their running created more gaps between them for him to capitalize on.

Running in a feint retreat was clever, as the goblins weren´t very fast on their short legs, nor disciplined. Soon he could basicly fight them one on one, as they didn´t form up and ran at widely different paces. The most eager of the bunch was a particulary big and ugly goblin with warts on his swollen nose. "Ghaak!", he cried in his undignified language. Probably a curse or war cry and swung his spear clumsily in a confusing pattern, drunk, bloodthirsty and...farting. But the latter was not Adens biggest problem. They still outnumbered him. Meanwhile some of the goblin non combatants were gathering in the distance, hoping for their menfolk to return alive. A goblin child cried miserably and was hit on the head by its ugly mother.

(( How do we want to resolve fighting, and how successful he is, in this instance? ))

Adan didn't really have much option, besides continuint to try to fight on the move. He didn't have his bow, and couldn't attack from any kind of range. Still, he didn't have a whole world's worth of stamina, either, ane eventually he was going to run out of energy. He knew that. So all he could do was try to find something like a narrow passage to seek cover in, and hopefully limit the goblins' ability to gang up on him. Failing to find that, he'd just make a stand whenever his lungs gave out, brandishing the sword. All this over some wooden trinket, that he didn't really have one reason or another to put much priority on. Luckily for him, he was too far away to notice the misery of the innocent goblins whose families he was slaughtering, or else his morals would have faltered and likely gotten him killed. Which, even without knowing of that, he was starting to think was a likely outcome of this encounter anyway.

There was no narrow passage of any sort on the beach, but on one of the smaller cliffs the half elf girl Uhna stood, having followed him again and started bombarding the goblins with stones. Distracting some. "Come on, you hero! Fight!", she shouted. "Cheering" him on. To be honest, she was rather dissapointed in him, thinking she had found a champion of some kind, but what did she know of the dangers of real combat?

Adan looked up the cliff face, to see the younger girl, tossing rocks down at the goblins pursuing him. To be honest, he was rather frustrated she'd still come along despite his warning. Even with her providing the distraction, he didn't like the idea of her putting herself at risk. But he was even more exasperated by her mocking him, and using that word 'hero'. He definitely wasn't any such thing, and had no designs on becoming so. He was just hired help, and he technically hadn't even been hired into this job. Still, the distraction she had provided to him by dropping stones on the goblins did give him an opportunity to move in, attacking while they were off guard, and striking to kill with heavy thrusts and slashes of the weapon as he moved from goblin to goblin. If any were wounded, he could come back to them afterward to finish the work.

He managed to kill or seriously wound around three to four goblins while the rest lowered their pace and were thinking twice about attacking. The young girl kept cheering him on. "You almost got them! Only a few more!", she shouted excited by her "adventure" and forgetting all the bad things she had experienced on this evening. To her it was an inspiring sight. But what did she know?
