Elise and her Tutor (for Chrysm but PM if you want in)
Stephan finished baseball practice then rushed home to shower and prepare for today's lesson with his next door neighbor, Elise. She'd fallen behind in her English and history studies in the home schooling her parents were giving her. He'd known her most of his life as both sets of parents bought their houses before either offspring was born. Now he was 15, a star student, certain to enter the college of his choosing so long as he kept those grades up above 3.5 . He had never hung out very much with Elise , she was three years his junior, but recently was seeing her 5 or 6 times a week trying hard to rescue her academic career.
Her parents were paying him a modest but welcome fee. He was already saving for college expenses. A scholarship was almost a sure thing but he wanted to pay his own way for clothes and everything else the scholarship didn't cover. The more he made now and the better the scholarship, the smaller the student loan he'd have to acquire..
The tutoring job was proving more difficult than he'd imagined. Elise was no dummy. She was a sharp kid and capable of much higher level work than she was producing.
So Stephan was certain she would rise to the occasion if he could only find ways to really motivate her.
She was excelling in math but producing almost no work in the others - especially English.
This was Stefan's second week tutoring her and though the first week had been frustrating he was convinced they would soon reach a turning point.
He rang her doorbell hoping for the best.......

Elise, a 12 year old girl, whose dad was out of town, and so was being tutored by neighbor and friend Stephan.
Over the past week, things haven't been exactly smooth sailing, as Elise did not wish to cooperate in the tutoring. THe only subject she has made any progress in is math, while she simply refuses to do anything else. If she did not find a topic interesting or to her liking, she would utterly refuse to learn any of it.
Now as the second week of the tutoring program begins, Elise is still reluctant to do anything except math. As she hears the doorbell ring, she knows it to be Stephan. She grudgingly goes to let him in.

"Hi Elise, I have to get home earlier than usual so we'll pack in as much work as possible right away."
"Your mom phoned me to say your English teacher had left word at your mom's office that you were close to a melt down in her class.
So lets devote today to English and I will make a homework plan that will allow you to catch up. I know you can handle it"
He followed Elise into her dad's study where he sat and spread out a number of graded papers and books.

Elise was on the brink of closing the door in Stephan's face, had he not hastened ito the house, at the mention of English class. Showing a look of pure disgust as she followed him as far as the top of the stairs, she then veered off to her room instead of following him to her father's study. She hated English class, and would down-right refuse to do any of the work.

He sighed hearing her go to the wrong room. This could be a rough day.
After a moment he followed her to her room .
"Elise, no fooling around today. Your parents are furious about your English grade and are going to fire me if you don't show some improved study habits.'
So come on to the study and let's get to work"
He saw the sullen look on her face and remembered the hair brush Elise's mother had attached to her husband's note with her own note tied with velvet ribbon . It said."We should have used this on her years ago. I hope you will not hesitate as we did", and he smiled.

(No implements)
Elise only gave a snort of resentment.
"If you want to waste my time, that's your problem." she said "I refuse to do anything I don't like."

He took a deep breath and spoke in his most measured tones.
"If you "refuse" to work there is nothing for me to do here. If you want my help break out the English and the World History texts and work on the assigned chapters. Otherwise I will resign and you can deal with your father's vow that you will not get your lavish European vacation unless ALL your grades improve. I could make easier money working at the gas station.
So it's your choice. We start working on the subjects whcih most need improvement, or you are on your own. I can't help you if you won't let me."

"Why do they say that I have to do courses that don't make sense and aren't in any way interesting?" she asked "If leanrning isn't fun, what's the point?"

"The point is for you to learn to use all of your brainpower. The courses should be about anything but they are designed to fit together in ways that teach you how to think well. The end result of all that IS fun. But not each part is necessarily going to please you. I expect you to work hard on all of them."

"I can tell if a course is usefull or not, and this one isn't." she said "Besides, what my father think I want, is entirely wrong. I never wanted that stupid vacation in Europe. How CAN he know what I want? He's never around to find out. And I don't care what he says, I'm NOT gonna do things I don't like to do, and that's final!"
