Description}: "Der Kochloeffel" - The Cooking Spoon Over the years, mom had sometimes threatened to spank her with the cooking spoon when she misbehaved. But every time, being the good girl that she was, she had somehow managed to avoid getting spanked altogether! Imagine the tummy-churning anxiety when it became clear that this time, it was actually going to happen! Now, as everyone knows, boys, being boys, have a penchant for getting a bit overexcited, and at the most inopportune times. So when she noticed the bulge growing in his undies - and the scolding had barely even begun! - she paid it little mind. As the well-deserved lecture continued, however, her boy began to seem more and more distracted. He just wouldn't look her in the eyes, despite her *repeated* requests, nor was he apparently too keen on having a quality two-sided conversation about the nitty-gritty particulars of how naughty boys should be dealt with in this house. When the wet spot finally appeared, growing gradually in time from the size of a pinhead, to that of a dime, to that of a quarter - that's when she decided it was past time they had a chat about that issue as well. * original sketch on this one was dated 2013. had to rework it a couple times till i was happy with it. better late than never.

Description}: (click the picture to enlarge) Sorry, no new art yet. But, for the last picture I drew, I made scans of my progress along the way, if anyone is interested. This isn't exactly a tutorial, but maybe someone will get something out of it! This is the final picture: http://animeotk.com/gallery/iloveforks/p22355-bad-habit.html step 1: I take some lined paper and come up with some ideas which I put down as fast as possible. Most of what is here is suck. I wrote on the sketch and made arrows for how things needed to change. step 2: Now I lay out my picture on good paper with very broad, loose lines, most of which will be erased soon. There are actually many more lines than show up in the scanned picture here. This doesn't take long. It is basically just so I know where the major forms are going on the page. Notice how the man's posture is way different in the final version, and the position of the girl's head, which I stuck in here as a placeholder because I couldn't make it look right. step 3: I pick the lines I want to keep, as well as try to make the picture more dynamic and exciting and generally remove some of the suck. I usually sketch the background here, but I didn't feel like it this time. At the point the faces are still mostly placeholders until I feel like doing the detail work on the expressions. step 4: I finalize the pencil. Notice how a lot of things changed here. Stuff that looked good in step 4 started sucking once I tried to refine it, either because the idea itself was bad, or mostly because I wasn't skilled enough to draw certain parts and make them look good. I had a lot of trouble with his spanking hand and her lower legs and feet. So I changed up. Also, I did some shading with pencil, because it is hard for me to tell if things look correct without shadows. step 5: I inked and then used an old beat up kneaded eraser to take the pencil off. I don't use a good one, because some ink comes off too and makes the eraser nasty. All of this probably takes longer than it seems like it ought to. Next, I would use colored pencil to color, which takes a godawful long time, and then re-ink over the waxy colored pencil, which is fast and makes the picture look much better. Then scan, and use the clone brush to remove errors, poor pencil work, ink smudges, etc. Then typically bring the brightness down and the contrast up. I will not post the colored pencil in progress, because my coloring style is rather frightful and is frankly an abomination of proper technique, and I'd hate to corrupt anyone with it. Bwaha.

Q: What's up with the shadows, they are in all the wrong places? A: I know. Q: Why is the electrical outlet upside down? A: It's a safety thing; this way, a plug that is beginning to pull out of the receptacle exposes its ground moreso than its hot/neutral. You just learned something while looking at porn. Weird, aye? Q: Why is the man floating several inches above the ground? A: See Q #2. Black pencil is a bitch to remove once it is put down.

Description}: AOTK Summer 2010 Contest entry. A bit of history, for those who don't know their Crusades: Raymond IV, Count of Toulouse, was one of the de facto leaders of the First Crusade (1096-1099), at least initially. After the long siege of Antioch (late 1097-1098), crusader moral was very low. Then, one soldier (Peter Bartholomew) claimed that he had a vision that the Holy Lance was buried in Antioch. It was then dug up. Well, it came to be that Raymond got a hold of the thing, and as crusaders like to do, he waved it about a lot and thought he was hot shit. The only problem was that as time went by, fewer and fewer people believed that this lance was actually the Holy one, for lack of any good evidence. No small amount of derision was brought upon Raymond by this fact. Here, we are pretending that Raymond's young wife Elvira (all of 16 or 17 years old at the time, and one of the first crusading noblewomen) has also expressed some doubt about the Holiness of this particular lance. The style of this piece is an illuminated manuscript. I borrowed liberally from various French and English manuscripts from the 12th thru the 14th century, for layout, font, style, etc. Note that Raymond is holding a rather strange pose as an attempt to capture the dynamic-yet-stilted style of these type of pieces. Text is in fairly standard gothic book hand. The Bible verses on the sides are in late Latin from the Vulgate Bible, and are: Prov 22:15: "Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, and the rod of correction shall drive it away." Prov 23:14: "Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and deliver his soul from hell." The main text is in classical latin, and reads: "And Raymond smacked his wife Elvira because she doubted the Power of the holy lance; [he] heavily beat Elvira on her naked bottom with the holy thing very long and very hard. At last, she did not doubt the power and might of the lance." Thanks VERY MUCH to Marc (AOTK member doutdes) for the latin translation. If anyone ever needs any latin help, this is the man to talk to. ;) EDIT: a few more notes for the interested. One. I did in fact invent the idea of the strips on the side with the proverbial text. Never seen it historically, tho I haven't looked hard. Two. The red lines under the text is not a mistake. These are seen commonly enough. Three. So much gold! Whomever wrote this book must have really liked this page, as gold was not cheap and was hard to work with. Four. I think I may have invented a few of the less common gothic letters when I wasn't at the computer... apologies.
