Saphira was in a pinch.
The giant clams on the islands of the Scylla territory were some of the biggest in the known world.
Large enough to accommodate one or two human-sized creatures with ease.
Such large clams also produced large pearls, that if successfully extracted, would fetch a pretty sum.
Thus Saphira had made her way to the edge of Scylla territory looking for the legendary shells and eventually found some on the outer islands.
Of course, going after giant clam pearls had its risks.
First there were the Scylla, who didn't like it when people plundered their islands without permission.
Additionally there were rumors of the clam-women, a type of nereid, that lived in empty clam shells.
They changed the appearance of their homes to make the clam seem alive and healthy and could even control the shells movement with their magic.
According to the stories they were the guardians of the clams and would punish anyone trying to steal their pearls.
Saphira had not believed the stories.
And of course the first clam she tried to open on that island had turned out to be a nereid's home.
Her attempt to flee had been cut short by one snap of the massive shell that had trapped her lower body inside the clam and left her unable to move.
"My, my, what have we here? An unannounced visitor. A naughty woman trying to steal pearls I wager."
Saphira could hear the voice of the Nereid from inside the clam.
